All offer 2K HDR video and Google Home integration, with the outdoor camera and doorbell rated IP65 by Google. See Google’s launch announcement.
The key trade-off is not just image quality. These are permanent wired installations, and Google’s most useful Gemini features—such as searchable video history, descriptive alerts and daily summaries—depend largely on the paid Google Home Premium service. For a home renovation or construction project, plan both the power and network requirements before choosing them.

The three new wired Nest devices
| Model | Generation | Power | Resolution and view | Launch price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam Indoor | 3rd gen | Wired | 2K HDR, 152° diagonal | $99.99 |
| Nest Cam Outdoor | 2nd gen | Wired | 2K HDR, 152° diagonal | $149.99 |
| Nest Doorbell | 3rd gen | Wired | 2K HDR, 166° diagonal, 1:1 aspect ratio | $179.99 |
The outdoor-camera price and two-pack price of $249.99 come from Google’s launch announcement. The Indoor and Doorbell prices are also shown on their current US Google Store pages: Nest Cam Indoor and Nest Doorbell. Prices, promotions and availability can vary by country.
What improves in the camera hardware?
Google describes 2K HDR as its highest camera resolution to date. Both Nest Cams have a 152-degree diagonal field of view, while the doorbell uses a taller 1:1 view with a 166-degree diagonal field of view. That square format is intended to show more of a person and the area immediately below the doorbell, including packages.
#1 Best Overall
- Meet the wired Nest Doorbell; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what’s at your door and and what to do next (Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- No need to recharge or replace batteries; the Nest Doorbell keeps you plugged into home, day and night
- The Nest Doorbell keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Person with flowers”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, the Nest Doorbell’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, see in the dark with night vision, and see the bigger picture with an expanded 166° field of view[1]
A new sensor and wider aperture are designed to improve low-light performance. Google also says the cameras retain infrared night vision while extending full-colour visibility around dawn and dusk. Digital zoom, cropping and animated, zoomed-in alert previews are included.
Higher resolution can provide more visual detail and give Google’s multimodal AI more information to interpret. It does not guarantee more accurate person, animal or vehicle detection in every environment. Lighting, distance, weather, obstructions, camera angle and network performance still affect results.
What Gemini adds
Gemini for Home changes the camera from a device that mainly reports motion into one that attempts to describe and search events. Google’s Gemini for Home announcement highlights these capabilities:
Recommended Free Tools
- More descriptive notifications: an alert may explain that a dog jumped out of a playpen rather than simply reporting motion.
- Natural-language video search: you can ask questions such as whether a delivery arrived or what happened to an object.
- AI event descriptions: the activity feed and video history can include narrative context.
- Home Brief: a summary of notable activity around the home.
- Ask Home: natural-language control, search and automation assistance across compatible Google Home devices.
- Gemini Live: more conversational voice interaction on supported Google Home devices.
These descriptions are AI-generated interpretations, not definitive evidence. They can misidentify people, animals, objects or events and should not be relied on for emergency, legal, insurance or employment decisions. Google’s material also does not establish that all processing occurs on the camera; do not assume these features work locally without an internet connection.
What works without a subscription?
The new devices are not rendered useless without Google Home Premium. Google lists these core features as included:
Rank #2
- Meet the wired Nest Doorbell; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what’s at your door and and what to do next (Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]

- 2K HDR live video
- Basic person, animal and vehicle alerts
- Package alerts on the doorbell
- Activity Zones
- Digital zoom and crop controls
- Six hours of event-video previews
- Preview clips of up to 10 seconds
- Encrypted video, two-step verification and a visible green status LED when the camera is processing or streaming
The important distinction is that AI-powered hardware does not mean every AI feature is free. Advanced Gemini camera tools and longer-term footage storage require a plan.
Google Home Premium: the ongoing cost
Google’s current consumer-facing subscription is Google Home Premium. Google says the plans cost:
| Plan | Price | Main camera benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10/month or $100/year | 30 days of event history, intelligent alerts, familiar-face support where available, zoomed-in previews, whole-home history, Gemini Live and automation assistance |
| Advanced | $20/month or $200/year | 60 days of event history, up to 10 days of continuous history on compatible wired devices, descriptive notifications, searchable video, event descriptions and daily summaries |
Google AI Pro subscribers receive Standard at no additional cost, while Google AI Ultra subscribers receive Advanced at no additional cost, subject to Google’s terms. Some product pages advertise a one-month Premium trial, but promotions can change.
Event-based history stores selected detected activity. Continuous history covers the full timeline, including periods when no event was detected. Continuous recording is limited to compatible wired devices and the Advanced plan.
First-year examples
Before tax, one Indoor camera costs $199.99 in the first year with Standard ($99.99 plus $100), or $299.99 with Advanced. A Doorbell costs $279.99 with Standard or $379.99 with Advanced. The subscription therefore changes the value calculation substantially, particularly for a single camera.
Rank #3
- The Nest Doorbell has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, package, animal, and vehicles and send you an alert in the Google Home app[1], no subscription required
- Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with live HD video with HDR and night vision[1]; see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; or add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of event video history[3]
- If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, the Nest Doorbell will store up to 1 hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]
- The Nest Doorbell is easy to install wired or wire-free; the built-in battery means it works with any door, or connect it to your existing doorbell wires with the included wire connector
- Whether you choose battery or wired installation, the battery-powered Nest Doorbell cannot continuously record 24/7 video history, even with a Nest Aware subscription
Installation and compatibility
Wired power is the defining practical limitation. The Indoor model needs an indoor power connection. The Outdoor model needs a suitable power route and weather-appropriate cable management. The Doorbell requires existing compatible doorbell wiring and an appropriate electrical setup.
That makes these products better suited to permanent installations than temporary setups. During construction or renovation, it is sensible to decide camera locations before walls are closed, provide suitable power routes, protect exterior cable runs and confirm that the doorbell transformer and wiring are compatible. A wired installation also does not guarantee operation during a power cut; backup power would be needed.
The new wired Indoor camera requires the Google Home app and a free Google Account. Google says it is not set up or managed through the legacy Nest app or home.nest.com. Older, battery-powered and legacy Nest devices may therefore have different app, storage and feature behaviour.
Cloud history, remote viewing and many AI features also depend on Google’s service, the internet connection, account region and subscription status. During an internet outage, those functions may be unavailable or delayed; the launch material does not establish a complete offline-recording policy for every model.

Google says video is encrypted by default, accounts use two-step verification and the green status LED indicates when the camera is processing or streaming. These are stated safeguards rather than an independent privacy audit. A cloud-connected camera still involves account access, network security, retention periods and AI-processing considerations.

Before installation, decide who can access the Google Home household and camera feed. Consider whether familiar-face recognition is appropriate where visitors, children or workers may be recorded, and review what happens to stored clips if Premium is cancelled. Basic live viewing and included event previews should be distinguished from Premium history and Gemini tools; cancelling a plan does not mean the physical camera necessarily stops working.
False alerts and missed alerts remain possible. Camera detection can be affected by glare, darkness, rain, foliage, distance, blocked views, unusual movement and poor connectivity. Treat alerts as assistance rather than a guaranteed security system.
How they differ from older or battery-powered Nest models
- Image: the new wired models use 2K HDR; Google’s comparison lists the battery Indoor model at 1080p HDR.
- Coverage: the new Cams offer a 152-degree diagonal view, compared with 130 degrees for the listed battery Indoor model.
- Power: the new lineup is wired, while battery models can be placed where power cables are impractical.
- History: the new devices include six hours of event previews, with longer event and continuous history tied to Premium.
- Software: the new wired Indoor model depends on Google Home rather than the legacy Nest app.
- AI: Gemini adds descriptions, search and summaries, but the most advanced tools require Premium, especially Advanced.
The new models do not replace every older Nest option. A battery camera may be the better choice for a rented property, a remote outbuilding or any location where routing cable is difficult.
Lower-cost Google Home-compatible options
Google also announced Walmart’s onn Indoor Camera Wired at a launch price of $22.96 and onn Video Doorbell Wired at $49.86. Google described the cameras as 1080p rather than 2K. The doorbell requires existing wiring. See the retailer pages for the onn Indoor Camera Wired and onn Video Doorbell Wired.
These products may suit budget buyers, but they should not be treated as equivalent to Nest hardware. Construction, resolution, field of view, installation requirements, support and current pricing can differ.
