Google says its March 2026 Google Home update lets eligible users ask Gemini what compatible cameras are seeing right now. The feature, called Live Search, is not included with every Google Home setup: it requires Google Home Premium Advanced, an eligible camera, and a supported account, country, and language.
What Google Home Live Search does
Live Search allows Gemini to interpret an available camera stream in response to a question about the current scene. For example, you might try:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- “What’s happening on the backyard camera?”
- “Is there a person at the front door?”
- “Do you see a package on the porch?”
- “What is the dog doing right now?”
These are practical example prompts, not a definitive list of commands published by Google. The answer depends on whether the camera is online, the stream is available, and Gemini can interpret what it sees. This is not continuous AI surveillance or a guarantee of human-level recognition.
Google’s release notes describe Live Search as an expansion of camera search: previously, Gemini could search past camera events, whereas Advanced subscribers can now search camera streams to understand the current state of the home. Google’s release notes provide the primary description of the change.

Live Search versus searching recorded footage
| Capability | What it uses | Typical use | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live view | The current camera stream | Watch a camera or use two-way talk | Normal compatible-camera access |
| Live Search | Gemini’s interpretation of the current stream | Ask what is happening now | Google Home Premium Advanced and eligible hardware |
| Recorded-video search | Recorded events and their AI-generated descriptions | Find a delivery, visitor, animal, or garage-door event | Eligible Gemini camera features; Advanced is required for the searchable-history package |
| AI event descriptions | Recorded video events | Summarise that a person left a package or a car parked | Eligible camera, account, region, and plan |
| Home Brief | Recorded activity | Review a daily summary of home events | Eligible Advanced setup |
Recorded-video search is available through Ask Home from a camera’s video-history view or from the top of the Google Home app. Google documents searches such as “Recent delivery,” “Unfamiliar visitor,” “Garage door opening,” “Did something eat my plants?”, “When did the dog walker come by?” and “Who let the dogs out?” Google’s Gemini camera help page explains how this historical search works.
That distinction matters. Live Search asks Gemini to interpret the current stream. Ask Home searches events the camera already recorded and described. Neither can recover footage that was never captured, has expired, or was not described usefully.
Who can use Live Search?
Google’s current documentation points to all of the following requirements:
- Google Home Premium Advanced: Standard does not include camera Live Search.
- Adult Home Admin: Gemini camera features are limited to adult administrators of the Home.
- Eligible hardware: This primarily includes eligible Nest cameras and doorbells set up in Google Home, including supported legacy Nest devices transferred into Google Home. Google says capabilities vary by device.
- Supported location and language: Availability differs by country and language.
- Google Home setup and internet access: The camera must be configured in Google Home and able to provide a working stream.
Google lists supported markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Mexico and several European countries, but the precise feature and language combination varies. Check Google’s current country and device information before subscribing or buying hardware.
Some Gemini for Home features are described as Early Access and are expanding over time. A missing option may therefore indicate a rollout or compatibility limitation rather than a hidden setting. Google also has separate documentation for Google Home Premium requirements and device availability.

Buying a broader AI subscription solely for one camera feature may not be economical.
How to enable Gemini camera features
Google’s documented setup path is:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Home, then Cameras.
- Select the camera.
- Tap the video player to display its controls.
- Tap More in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Events, then Seen events.
- Turn on Gemini for Home camera features.
- Review and accept the Gemini for Home disclosures if prompted.
- Tap Manage and enable the cameras that should use the feature.
The exact toggle may not appear unless the account, subscription, camera, region and rollout status all qualify. Google may also show an early-access prompt in Google Home settings.
What recorded-video search can and cannot do
Historical search works against AI-generated descriptions of recorded events. It can help locate events involving deliveries, visitors, pets, vehicles and other activity without manually scrubbing every clip.
Audio-based descriptions require the camera’s microphone and audio recording to be enabled. Google documents sound descriptions including dog barking, footsteps, breaking glass, loud crashes, sirens, screaming or crying, and gunshots. Familiar-face searches can return events in which a recognised person appeared, even when other people were also present.

Results remain dependent on the camera’s view, lighting, recording settings, available history and the quality of Gemini’s description. An AI description may be incomplete or incorrect. Do not treat a camera answer as definitive evidence for an emergency response, insurance claim, legal decision or safety-critical judgment.
Other Gemini for Home improvements
Live Search is the headline camera change, but Google’s release notes describe a wider Gemini for Home update. It includes better device targeting for homes with multiple locations, improved handling of room and whole-home requests, better categorisation of uniquely named devices, and use of the home address saved in Google Home for location-sensitive answers such as weather and local news.
Google also lists reliability improvements for notes, lists, reminders, calendars, timers, alarms, automations and music playback. Additional automation starters, conditions and actions are available in the Google Home automation editor. These improvements are related to the broader Gemini rollout, not additional Live Search modes.

Before enabling Gemini camera features, review Google’s current disclosures and decide whether cloud-based AI analysis of home footage fits your household’s privacy expectations. Consider who has administrator access, whether audio recording is appropriate, and whether familiar-face features should be enabled.

Troubleshooting when Live Search is missing
- Confirm that you are an adult Admin of the Home.
- Confirm that your plan is Google Home Premium Advanced, not Standard.
- Check that your country and language support the feature.
- Confirm that the camera is an eligible Nest or compatible device set up in Google Home rather than only in the legacy Nest app.
- Open the camera’s Settings → Events → Seen events page and look for the Gemini camera toggle.
- Accept the Gemini disclosures and use Manage to enable the individual camera.
- Check that live view works and the camera has an internet connection.
- Update the Google Home app through your device’s app store and try again.
If the option still does not appear, the likely causes are device eligibility, regional availability or an incomplete rollout. Google has not published a universal app-version number for this feature, so do not assume that installing a particular version guarantees access.
Is Google Home Premium Advanced worth it?
It is most defensible for existing Nest users who regularly search camera history, need longer retention, want daily summaries, or need 24/7 history on supported wired cameras. Live Search is an additional benefit for those users, rather than a reason every household should subscribe.
Advanced is a poor fit if you only need live viewing and two-way talk, use unsupported third-party cameras, rarely record useful events, or are uncomfortable with cloud-based AI analysis. It is also poor value if you expect Gemini to identify every person, package, pet or object reliably.
Recommended Free Tools
If you already have Advanced, enable the feature and test it with ordinary questions before relying on it. If you have Standard, upgrade only when live-camera questions, searchable history, longer retention or daily summaries solve a recurring problem. If you have a non-Nest camera, confirm compatibility first; do not subscribe on the assumption that every camera visible in Google Home qualifies.
