Google broadly rolled out Google Home controls in the Gemini mobile app on February 17, 2025. The integration lets Gemini operate compatible lights, thermostats, TVs, speakers, blinds, vacuums and other Google Home devices through natural-language requests on Android and iPhone or iPad.
That 2025 rollout is not the same thing as Google’s newer Gemini for Home voice assistant for speakers and displays, which is rolling out separately in 2026. The steps below explain the mobile-app integration and its limits.

What Google Home in Gemini actually is
Google Home is connected to Gemini as a mobile-app integration. Once connected, Gemini can access the homes and devices available to the same Google Account in Google Home, including compatible devices added or shared later.
It is not automatically a replacement for Google Assistant on every Nest speaker or display. The phone-based integration runs inside the Gemini mobile app. Google Home controls are currently not available through the Gemini web app or Gemini Live chats under Google’s documented requirements.

The original “rolls out to everyone” wording described the broad February 2025 availability reported by T3. It did not mean that every device, country, account or smart-home action had identical support.
Who can use the integration?
- The Gemini mobile app on Android or iPhone/iPad.
- A personal Google Account, rather than a work or school account in Google’s documented iOS flow.
- The same Google Account signed in to Google Home.
- Keep Activity turned on.
- Devices already set up and controllable in Google Home.
Third-party products must first be set up through the manufacturer’s app unless they support Matter or another supported Google Home setup method. Check the device in Google Home’s compatibility guidance before assuming Gemini can operate it.
How to connect Google Home to Gemini
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Sign in with the Google Account used in Google Home.
- Ask Gemini for a home-control action, such as
Turn on the living room lights. - If Google Home is not connected, Gemini should offer to connect it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- If Gemini does not invoke Google Home automatically, include
@Google Homein the request.
To manage or disconnect the integration, open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings. An earlier version of the interface used a path resembling Profile picture → Extensions → Device Control → Google Home → Connect Google Home; those labels may no longer appear in the current app.

What Gemini can control
| Category | Example request |
|---|---|
| Lights and power | Dim the hallway lights to 40%. |
| Climate | Set the thermostat to 68 degrees. |
| Fans | Turn on the bedroom fan. |
| Media | Pause the living-room TV. |
| Window coverings | Close the bedroom blinds. |
| Appliances and vacuums | Start the robot vacuum. |
| Broadcasts | Tell the kitchen speaker that dinner is ready. |
| Existing routines | Start movie night. |
Google also lists outlets, switches, air-conditioning units, heaters, curtains, shutters, washers, coffee makers and other compatible products. Exact behavior depends on the device, its room assignment, the manufacturer integration and regional availability.

A device appearing in Google Home does not guarantee complete control. Some third-party integrations expose status but not every command. Google Home supports native integrations, Matter and compatible “Works with Google Home” services, but the exact model remains important. Available integrations can be checked in Google Home under Add → Link apps or services → Works with Google, as described in Google’s supported-services guidance.

Gemini can broadcast to Google Assistant-enabled speakers, Smart Displays and Smart Clocks. You can target a device, room or the entire home. If no destination is specified, Google says the message is sent to all supported devices in the home.
Broadcasting requires at least one compatible speaker, display or clock, the same Google Account on Gemini and the home device, Keep Activity enabled, and—according to Google’s current documentation—a personal account. See Google’s broadcast requirements.
Lock-screen controls
On compatible Android phones, Gemini can perform some smart-home and media actions while the phone is locked. This is conditional, not an unrestricted security bypass: sensitive requests may still require authentication.

- Google Nest Hub 1st Gen H1A – 7-inch smart display with Google Assistant built in for hands-free help, smart home control, entertainment, and daily organization.
- Korean Spec Model – International/Korean version of the Google Nest Hub H1A. Language can be changed to English after setup through the Google Home app/device settings.
- Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
- Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
- Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
To enable the feature, use Gemini → Menu → Profile picture → Settings → Gemini on lock screen → Use Gemini without unlocking. Labels can vary by phone and app version. Google’s lock-screen guidance explains the current limitations.

iPhone and iPad users can use supported Google Home controls in the Gemini app, but should not assume Android feature parity. Lock-screen behavior and routine support are more limited or different on iOS.
What Gemini cannot safely or reliably do
Gemini is designed for convenience, not safety- or security-critical control. In particular:
- It cannot complete security-device actions that require a PIN.
- It cannot add or delete devices from a Google Home.
- Unsupported security requests may open the Google Home app instead.
- Not every routine starter or action is supported.
- Multi-step routines that require back-and-forth clarification may fail.
Do not rely on conversational control for requests such as:
Unlock the front door.
Disable the security system.
Turn off the smoke alarm.
Start a safety-critical appliance while nobody is home.
Use a physical control or the appropriate device app for urgent, security-sensitive or safety-critical actions, and verify important changes visually in Google Home.

Routines: starting is different from editing
On Android, Gemini can start some existing routines by voice or text. That does not mean it can freely create or edit every routine. Routine setup and editing remain primarily Google Home tasks, and a routine containing unsupported actions may not complete as expected.
Review routines in Google Home and simplify unsupported steps. Avoid relying on a routine for security, fire prevention or another situation where failure could cause harm. Google’s Home automation guidance treats automations as convenience features.
Privacy and account access
Connecting Google Home gives Gemini access to the same homes and devices available to that Google Account in Google Home. That can include another household member’s shared home or devices added later.
- Review the homes and devices accessible from the account.
- Use clear room and device names.
- Be cautious when the account is shared across multiple households.
- Disconnect Google Home in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings if you no longer want the connection.
The key trade-off is convenience versus certainty: Gemini accepts flexible language, but interpretation can be less predictable than tapping a clearly labelled control.

Google is also rolling out Gemini for Home, a newer dedicated voice-assistant experience for compatible Google speakers and displays. It should not be confused with the Google Home extension inside the Gemini phone app.

Gemini for Home has separate country, language, hardware and firmware requirements. Google currently lists Cast firmware 3.76 or higher for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher for displays. Older compatible speakers and displays support most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live.
The rollout is progressive rather than universal. Google also says that once a home switches to Gemini for Home, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Check the current Gemini for Home requirements before upgrading a home that depends on an existing voice-assistant setup.
Troubleshooting common problems
Google Home does not appear in Gemini
- Confirm you are using the Gemini mobile app, not the web app.
- Check that both apps use the same personal Google Account.
- Turn on Keep Activity.
- Ask
Turn on the living room lights, then try adding@Google Home. - Update Gemini and Google Home.
- Review Connected Apps and reconnect Google Home.
- Confirm the device works in Google Home before troubleshooting Gemini.
Gemini controls the wrong device
Rename duplicate devices, add room names and use an explicit request such as Turn off the desk lamp in the office. Verify room assignments in Google Home.

The manufacturer integration may expose status without control, or the device may require its own app. Check whether the exact model supports Matter or is listed as a compatible Google Home service. Do not assume that visibility means full functionality.
A security request fails
That is expected when the action requires a PIN or protected interaction. Open Google Home or the manufacturer’s app and complete the action there if supported; do not try to bypass the protection.
A routine only partly works
Inspect the routine in Google Home and remove unsupported actions or conversational steps. Test ordinary convenience routines before relying on them.
Is the Gemini Home integration worth using?
Yes, for ordinary phone-based control of compatible lights, climate devices, media equipment, blinds and appliances. It is especially useful when device names and rooms are organised well and you prefer conversational requests to navigating several controls.
Use Google Home for setup, device management, sharing, automation editing and visual confirmation. Use manufacturer apps when a third-party product exposes only partial Google Home control. For security, emergencies and safety-critical equipment, use direct physical controls or the dedicated device interface.
