Yes. Google Home for the web added camera history, event playback, custom-clip creation and browser downloads during the March 2024 rollout. It is useful for reviewing incidents on a desktop and saving footage directly to a computer, but it is not a uniform replacement for home.nest.com: controls depend on the camera generation, account setup, migration status and recording entitlement.
What changed in Google Home for the web?
Google’s first web camera preview, announced in October 2022, concentrated on live streams, full-screen viewing, camera status and basic controls. The missing piece was recorded history. Owners of newer Nest cameras reported in 2023 that the web interface could show a live feed without offering the history timeline available elsewhere.

Reports on March 13–14, 2024 described the addition of camera histories, recorded-event playback, personalized clips and downloads in Google Home for the web. How to view and download a recording
Use a desktop browser and the Google account associated with the camera. Google can change labels and their location, so treat the following as the current feature path rather than a permanent promise about button names.
- Open https://home.google.com/.
- Sign in with the same Google account used in the Google Home mobile app.
- Choose the relevant home, then select the camera.
- Open the camera’s history, events or recorded-video area rather than staying in live view.
- Select an event to preview it. If offered, use the custom-clip control to set the portion you want.
- Choose Download or the download icon and approve the browser’s save location.
The result is a video file saved by the browser, so it can be placed in an incident folder, attached to an email or retained on the computer without first transferring it from a phone. The March 2024 reports establish playback and downloading, but they do not guarantee that every recording has identical audio, timestamps, metadata or editing controls.
Event history is not automatically a continuous timeline
For newer cameras managed in Google Home, “history” generally means detected or otherwise recorded events that can be opened and, where eligible, downloaded. That is different from an unrestricted, continuously scrub-able timeline or an arbitrary export of any period.

Older Nest cameras can follow a different workflow through the Nest app or home.nest.com, including different timeline and manual clip-editing controls. Google’s community documentation describes downloadable detected events for newer cameras while distinguishing the older Nest experience: camera download guidance.
Which cameras can use it?
The October 2022 preview listed the following families. That announcement is not a definitive August 2026 compatibility matrix; the live Google Home interface and current support documentation take precedence.

Community posts document that some older devices remain in the Nest ecosystem while newer devices are managed in Google Home. Migration can therefore change which portal, history view and clip tools you see: original camera-web announcement and migration and history discussion.

Subscription and retention limits
The available sources do not establish a single August 2026 rule for which history or download functions require which Google Home or Nest Aware tier. Live viewing can be available when the same account does not have the same amount of recorded history. Retention, event availability and any continuous-history option depend on the camera, account and current subscription configuration.
Check the account’s current status before promising a customer, property manager or investigator that a particular period can be recovered. Do not assume that event history, 24/7 history and custom downloadable segments are the same capability.
Why history or downloading may be missing
History does not appear
- The camera is unsupported in the Google Home web experience or is still managed through the Nest app or home.nest.com.
- The device has not migrated to Google Home, or you are signed in to a different Google account or home.
- The account or camera lacks the relevant recorded-history entitlement.
- The feature has not reached that account or configuration.
- You are viewing live video and have not opened the camera’s history or events panel.
The download control is absent
- The selected item is not a downloadable recording.
- The camera exposes detected events but not arbitrary timeline exports.
- The clip must be opened or customized before the download control appears.
- Browser download permissions, pop-up blocking or privacy extensions are interfering.
Playback is slow or fails
- Reload Google Home and retry the event.
- Use a current desktop browser and test another camera.
- Try the same event in the Google Home mobile app.
- Confirm that the camera is online.
- Temporarily disable interfering extensions or unusually strict privacy settings.
- Try another network if available.
Do not factory-reset the camera as an initial response. If you contact support, record the camera model, browser version, computer and operating system, network conditions, and whether live video, history or both are affected.

The camera went offline
Power or network loss is a connectivity problem, not a browser-history workaround. A camera that did not upload footage cannot supply that missing event later.
Audio is missing
A support-community report describes recordings without audio even when audio settings were enabled: audio-recording report. That is a separate recording or configuration issue; it does not establish that web downloads universally omit audio.
Google Home web versus the legacy Nest web experience
Use Google Home web first for newer Google Home-managed cameras and event downloads. Use the Nest app or home.nest.com when an older camera remains in that ecosystem or exposes controls unavailable in Google Home.

- All cameras: seeing a live stream does not prove that the account has the same recorded-history or export access.
Who benefits most from the web feature?
- People investigating an incident on a large monitor.
- Households reviewing multiple camera views from a desktop.
- Users who need to save footage directly to a computer rather than transfer it from a phone.
- Teams preserving an event file for an insurer, landlord, police report or internal record.
It is a weaker fit if you require guaranteed full desktop timeline parity across every Nest generation, broad local-storage choices or consistently predictable playback during service problems.
Bottom line
Google Home for the web did gain camera history, playback and downloads in March 2024. The practical workflow is to sign in at home.google.com, open a compatible camera’s events, preview the recording, create a clip when offered and download it. Treat the result as an event-oriented feature whose controls, retention and reliability vary by camera generation, migration state, account entitlement and current service conditions—not as a universal replacement for every legacy Nest web function.
