Gemini for Home is no longer just a future announcement. Google has begun rolling it out as an early-access platform for compatible Google Home and Nest devices, bringing more natural conversations, multi-step commands, AI-powered camera searches, Home Brief summaries, and natural-language automation creation.
Basic features such as device control, timers, and general questions do not require a subscription. More advanced capabilities—including Gemini Live and searchable video history—require Google Home Premium. The new $99.99 Google Home Speaker is designed specifically for Gemini, but existing compatible hardware may already receive many of the software features.

What Gemini for Home actually is
Gemini for Home is an umbrella name for Google’s AI upgrade across the Google Home ecosystem. It is not simply a new app or a replacement speaker. The rollout covers:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A more conversational Gemini for Home voice assistant.
- Smarter controls for lights, thermostats, locks, media, lists, calendars, alarms, and routines.
- Conversational follow-ups and multi-step commands.
- AI-generated descriptions of camera events.
- Searchable video history and Home Brief activity summaries.
- Natural-language automation creation through Help me create.
- Gemini Live on supported devices and plans.
- New Gemini-focused hardware, including the Google Home Speaker.
Google says the assistant still works through the familiar “Hey Google” wake phrase, but it can understand less rigid phrasing, maintain context, accept corrections, and handle more complicated requests.

What changes compared with Google Assistant?
The important difference is conversational ability rather than a completely different way to operate your home. Instead of memorising fixed command formats, you can speak more naturally and make follow-up requests.
For example, you might say:
“Turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp.”
You can then follow up with, “Actually, leave the hallway light on too,” without repeating the original request. Google also says Gemini can combine multiple actions, answer broader questions, help troubleshoot problems, and create routines from descriptions.
Results still depend on correctly named rooms and devices, permissions, internet access, and compatible integrations. Google does not guarantee that Gemini will always be accurate or faster, so security-sensitive actions should be checked manually.
Useful things Gemini for Home can do
Control devices with natural language
Examples include:
- “Turn off the downstairs lights but leave the hallway on.”
- “Set the thermostat to 68 degrees when everyone leaves.”
- “Turn on the porch lights at sunset and switch them off at midnight.”
- “Pause the music and lock the front door.”
Locks, garage doors, alarms, thermostats, and other consequential devices deserve particular caution. A misunderstood command can have practical or safety implications.
Manage everyday information
Google’s release notes describe improvements involving timers, alarms, recurring events, calendars, lists, music playback, sports updates, and multi-step requests. You can ask for weather or general information, add items to a list, set a reminder, or continue a conversation without repeating the wake phrase when Continued Conversation is enabled.
Create automations by describing them
The Google Home app’s Help me create feature lets you describe the result you want in ordinary language. Examples include:
- “Create a relaxing evening routine.”
- “At sunrise, set the lights to 50% and play my morning playlist.”
- “Make it seem like someone is home while I’m on vacation.”
Gemini can suggest or build an automation, but you should review it before saving. The result still depends on compatible devices, correct setup, Wi-Fi, and service availability.
Search camera and doorbell history
For supported cameras and plans, Gemini can help answer questions about recorded events rather than forcing you to scan clips manually. A request such as “What time was Keith at the front door yesterday?” may produce a summary of relevant footage. Google also describes event explanations, current-camera questions, and Home Brief summaries of activity around the house.
This is an aid to reviewing footage, not definitive evidence. AI descriptions may be incomplete or wrong, and camera features depend on the model, recording settings, country, account, and Google Home Premium plan. They should not replace security monitoring or emergency services.

Which devices support Gemini for Home?
Google says the Gemini for Home voice assistant works with Google Home and Nest speakers and displays released since 2016 in some form. That broad statement does not mean every device receives every feature.
| Device category | Gemini voice assistant | Gemini Live | Camera or video AI | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Home Speaker (2026) | Yes | Designed for Gemini | Not applicable | New $99.99 Gemini-focused hardware |
| Nest Hub (2nd generation) | Yes | Plan and device dependent | Display-dependent | Supports the fuller experience |
| Nest Hub Max | Yes | Plan and device dependent | Display-dependent | Check the current rollout for your account |
| Older Home and Nest speakers | Generally | Often limited or unavailable | Not applicable | Early-access limitations may apply |
| Third-party speakers and displays | Most features | May not be supported | Not applicable | Compatibility varies by product |
| Nest cameras and doorbells | App and voice features | Not applicable | Supported features vary | Plan, model, settings, and region matter |
Google’s compatibility documentation should be treated as the final authority for a particular device. A device that supports Gemini voice commands may not support Gemini Live, display features, searchable video, or every new automation capability.
What is free, and what requires Google Home Premium?
Google’s current consumer information separates core Gemini functions from advanced features.
Features available without a subscription
- Basic smart-home device control.
- Timers and general questions.
- Many conversational commands and follow-ups.
- Supported lists, calendars, music, alarms, and routines.
Features associated with Google Home Premium
- Gemini Live.
- Searchable video history.
- Additional camera intelligence and advanced security capabilities.
- Longer event-history retention, depending on plan.
Google’s Q2 2026 information sheet lists Standard at $10 per month and Advanced at $20 per month. It lists 30 days of event-based video history on Standard and 60 days on Advanced. Pricing, availability, and included features can vary by market, so check Google’s current checkout page before subscribing.
Google also says Home Premium is included with Google AI Pro and Ultra. That may be useful if you already pay for one of those bundles, but subscribing to a broader AI plan solely for a single speaker is unlikely to make sense for most households.

Announced on June 17, 2026, and scheduled to reach stores on June 25, the Google Home Speaker is Google’s first audio device built specifically for Gemini. Google announced a launch price of $99.99 and says it includes 10 natural-sounding voice options, support for more natural multi-step conversations, and pairing with a Google TV Streamer for enhanced audio or home-theatre use.
It is optional. Existing compatible Google Home and Nest speakers can receive many Gemini software features, so buying the new speaker is not necessary simply to obtain basic Gemini commands.
The new hardware is most compelling if you want a new primary speaker, better or newer audio hardware, a device designed around Gemini from the start, or integration with a Google TV Streamer. If your current speaker works well and your needs are limited to lights, plugs, and timers, try the software upgrade first.

Privacy and household considerations
Gemini makes more of your home context useful to the assistant. Requests may involve devices, rooms, household routines, calendars, lists, and camera or doorbell events. That can make the system more useful, but it also makes the information being interpreted more sensitive.
Recommended Free Tools
- Continued Conversation keeps the microphone active for a few seconds after a response.
- The assistant is enabled at the home level and may be available to household members and guests according to access settings.
- Voice-matched children receive a filtered experience, with parental controls available.
- Google provides controls to review or delete Gemini for Home activity.
- Camera descriptions and summaries can be inaccurate or incomplete.
The practical privacy trade-off is not necessarily that the system is continuously watching your home. Camera recording, notifications, event history, and AI interpretation depend on the specific camera, settings, plan, and rollout. The concern is that more household activity can become searchable and semantically described by a cloud-connected service.

The Gemini option does not appear
Possible reasons include an incomplete rollout, unsupported country or language, an outdated app, an ineligible account configuration, or an invitation that has not arrived.
- Update Google Home.
- Check your account’s country and language.
- Review Google’s official availability table.
- Confirm the device is linked to the correct home.
- Do not factory-reset hardware merely to force access.
A feature works on one device but not another
This is expected. Voice assistance, Gemini Live, camera intelligence, and display functions have separate requirements. Use Google’s device-specific compatibility information rather than assuming that every device in a home has identical support.
Gemini misunderstands a command
Use consistent room and device names, separate security-sensitive requests, review AI-created automations, and confirm locks, alarms, garage doors, and similar actions manually.

Should you upgrade?
Upgrade the software first if you already own Google Home or Nest hardware
This is the sensible starting point if you mainly want more natural commands, follow-up conversations, better routines, or basic device control. You may not need new hardware or a subscription.
Consider Home Premium if you own several Nest cameras or doorbells
Premium is easier to justify when searchable history, event summaries, Gemini Live, or longer retention would solve a real problem. It is less compelling for a speaker-only household.

Consider the new speaker if your current hardware is old or unreliable
The Google Home Speaker is a hardware upgrade, not a mandatory Gemini key. Buy it for its audio, placement, Gemini-focused design, or Google TV pairing—not merely to unlock basic features that may already work elsewhere.
Delay the switch if rollback matters
If your household depends on Google Assistant’s current behaviour, dislikes recurring fees, requires local or offline operation, or is uncomfortable with AI-generated camera descriptions, wait until the rollout and feature differences are clearer. Google says the migration cannot be reversed at the home level.
How Google Home compares with alternatives
Amazon Alexa is a natural alternative for households already using Echo devices or Amazon services, particularly where broad third-party hardware support matters. Check Amazon’s current AI feature names and subscription requirements before comparing them directly.
Apple Home and Siri fit Apple-centric households that already use iPhones, Apple TVs, or HomePods and prioritise Apple account integration, HomeKit, and Matter. Apple’s capabilities should not be assumed to match Google’s Gemini features.
Matter-based systems can reduce dependence on one assistant ecosystem and improve interoperability across Google, Amazon, and Apple devices, although the user experience still depends on the controller and accessories.
Home Assistant is better for technically capable users who prioritise local control, deep customisation, and independence from a single cloud assistant. It is less suitable for someone who wants the simplest plug-and-play voice experience.
Verdict
Gemini meaningfully improves Google Home for people who want conversational control, multi-step requests, easier automation creation, and more useful camera-event search. It does not offer the same value to someone who only needs simple light, plug, or thermostat commands.
Existing owners should try the compatible software features before buying the $99.99 Google Home Speaker. Camera-heavy households may find Home Premium worthwhile, while privacy-conscious, subscription-averse, or offline-first users may prefer to delay the switch or consider a different ecosystem. The biggest decision is not whether Gemini sounds impressive; it is whether its advanced features justify the subscription, cloud dependence, compatibility limits, and irreversible move away from Google Assistant.
