Google Home can now use compatible physical button and switch events to start household automations. Depending on the device, a single press, double press, multi-press, long press or release can trigger lights, plugs, scenes, notifications and other supported actions—without opening the app or using a voice command.
The feature was reported as rolling out with Google Home app version 4.8 on February 2, 2026, alongside new humidity, robot-vacuum, battery, sensor-state and lighting controls. Google’s current documentation is the best reference for what is available now.

What changed in Google Home?
The important change is not universal support for every smart button. Google Home now exposes compatible button and switch events as automation starters. A starter is the event that begins an automation; it is not an action Google Home can perform and generally cannot be used as a condition.
Google’s supported automation list also includes the following capabilities, although availability varies by device and integration:
#1 Best Overall
- IMMERSIVE 360° SOUND – Enjoy rich, room-filling audio with clear vocals, detailed highs, and deep bass designed to enhance music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more.
- DESIGNED FOR MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT – Enjoy your favorite music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more with room-filling sound and impressive audio clarity.
- STEREO PAIRING CAPABILITY – Pair two compatible speakers together for a wider soundstage and enhanced stereo performance throughout your space.
- MODERN DESIGN WITH MULTIPLE COLOR OPTIONS – Features a sleek, contemporary design available in Sage, Porcelain, Berry, and Hazel to complement a variety of home décor styles.
- DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY ENTERTAINMENT – Ideal for enjoying music, podcasts, radio stations, and other audio content with premium sound quality and simple operation.
| Capability | What it can do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Single or multi-press | Start an automation from a button or switch event | The device must expose the event to Google Home |
| Long press or long-press release | Trigger different automations from a held button | Not available on every model |
| Humidity threshold | Start or restrict an automation when humidity reaches a level | The sensor must provide the required state |
| Robot vacuum docking | Use a docked state as a starter or condition | Does not guarantee access to every vacuum function |
| Battery state | React to low battery or charging states | Battery reporting differs between devices |
| Binary sensor state | Use open/closed, leak/no-leak or freeze/no-freeze states | Only supported states appear in the editor |
| Light color and temperature | Set a supported light to a particular color or white temperature | Depends on the light’s integration and exposed traits |
Google lists these behaviors in its supported automation starters, conditions and actions. The February announcement and app-version report came from 9to5Google.
What “starter only” means
Google Home automations have three parts:
- Starters: events that begin the automation.
- Conditions: optional rules checked after a starter occurs.
- Actions: what Google Home does when the starter and conditions are satisfied.
A compatible button press can be a starter. It does not necessarily mean Google Home can:
- Use “the button was pressed” as a condition in another automation.
- Simulate a button press as an automation action.
- Recognize custom timing logic such as two presses within 10 seconds.
Multiple starters can be added, and Google Home can apply conditions using either “any” or “all,” depending on the automation. The exact choices shown depend on the device.

Useful examples
Bedside or renter-friendly control
- Single press: turn off bedroom lights.
- Double press: turn off lights and selected smart plugs.
- Long press: activate a nighttime scene.
- Condition: run only when someone is home.
A portable button can provide physical control without replacing a wired wall switch, which is useful in rental properties or rooms where additional wiring is undesirable.
Bathroom humidity control
A humidity sensor could start an automation when humidity rises above a threshold, such as 60%, and turn on a fan connected to a compatible smart plug. A second automation could turn the fan off when humidity falls, if the sensor and editor expose the needed state and action.

The devices must expose compatible controls to Google Home.
Accessibility control
A large, tactile button placed near a bed, sofa or doorway can trigger lights, plugs or scenes without requiring phone navigation, voice recognition or small touchscreen controls. This is a potential accessibility use case, not a certification or guarantee for any particular product.
Robot-vacuum status
Where supported, a vacuum’s docked state could trigger a notification, change a status light or begin another supported action. Google Home support for docking does not imply control over room selection, mop settings, cleaning modes or every error state.

Hardware and compatibility requirements
Matter does not always mean Wi-Fi
Matter is a smart-home standard, not a single wireless connection. A Matter device may use Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread.
For example, IKEA’s BILRESA dual-button remote uses Matter over Thread. IKEA says a Thread Border Router is required to control it through a phone or comparable smart-home ecosystem and lists Google among its compatible platforms.
Therefore, buying a Matter button does not automatically mean it will work immediately. The home needs an appropriate Google Home/Matter setup and, for Thread devices, a Thread Border Router.
Google Home hub hardware
Google says its current Google Home Speaker functions as a Matter hub for Google Home and includes a Thread 1.3 Border Router. Its listed US price was $99.99 when checked on August 16, 2026. It is not the only possible compatible hub, so check Google’s current compatibility information before buying hardware solely for this feature.
Vendor hubs may still be necessary
“Works with Google Home” does not necessarily mean direct, hub-free pairing. Aqara’s Wireless Mini Switch, for example, uses Zigbee and requires an Aqara hub, even though Aqara lists Google Home compatibility.

Third-party integrations may expose only basic on/off control while withholding brightness, color, sensor states or button gestures. Google recommends checking the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact capabilities.

| Product | US price observed Aug. 16, 2026 | Transport and requirement | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA BILRESA dual button | $6.99 | Matter over Thread; Thread Border Router required | Budget-conscious users and renters |

Prices are US observations and may change. The cheapest button is not necessarily the cheapest complete solution if the required hub or Thread Border Router is missing.
Troubleshooting button automations
The device pairs but no button starter appears
- The device may not expose its event to Google Home.
- A vendor bridge may provide only basic controls.
- The Matter fabric or Thread network may be incomplete.
- The feature may not yet be available for the account, region, device type or app build.
- You may be using an older automation or script workflow.
Try the current visual editor before deciding the device is unsupported. Google distinguishes the enhanced editor from older or scripted workflows; see its scripted-automation documentation.
The button is offline
- Check the battery and confirm the button is still visible in its vendor app, if applicable.
- Confirm the Google Home hub, vendor hub or Thread Border Router is online.
- Check radio range between the button and its network infrastructure.
- Restart the relevant hub or border router.
- Remove and re-add the Matter device only as a last resort.
- After the device returns online, edit or recreate the automation if necessary.
A factory reset can require pairing the device again across Matter fabrics, so it should not be the first response.

Double press or long press does not work
Separate three capability levels:
- Hardware: what the physical button can detect.
- Vendor app: what the manufacturer supports.
- Google Home: what the current integration exposes as a starter.
A button may support double press in its own app but expose only single press to Google Home. That is usually an integration limitation rather than a hardware failure.
The automation saves but does not run
- Confirm that the automation has a starter.
- Check whether conditions are set to all when you intended any.
- Confirm the exact event—such as release rather than press—is being performed.
- Check that the target device is online and supports the selected action.
- Confirm that the automation is a household automation where appropriate.
Google notes that an automation without a starter will not begin automatically, although it may be manually run when conditions are also empty.
The bottom line
Google Home is becoming more useful for physical smart-home controls, but this is a capability expansion—not a universal button platform. Before buying, verify the button’s transport, hub requirements and exact events exposed to Google Home. For Thread products such as IKEA BILRESA, confirm that the home has a Thread Border Router. For Zigbee products such as Aqara’s switch, budget for the required vendor hub.
