Google Ended Support for Nest Learning Thermostat Gen 1 and Gen 2 on October 25, 2025: What Still Works

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google ended cloud support for the first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025. The affected thermostats were removed from the Nest and Google Home apps, so remote control, Google Assistant commands, notifications, Home/Away Assist, and Nest Protect integration no longer work. The hardware was not remotely disabled completely: owners can still adjust temperature and settings at the thermostat, and existing schedules may continue to run locally.

This change affects the 2011 first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, the 2012 second-generation model, and the 2014 European second-generation version. It does not automatically affect every round Nest thermostat.

Which Nest thermostats lost support?

Google’s end-of-support notice applies specifically to these early Nest Learning Thermostat models:

Affected model Original release Support status
Nest Learning Thermostat, 1st generation 2011 Support ended October 25, 2025
Nest Learning Thermostat, 2nd generation 2012 Support ended October 25, 2025
Nest Learning Thermostat, 2nd-generation European version 2014 Support ended October 25, 2025

“Nest Thermostat Gen 1 and Gen 2” is an imprecise shorthand. Do not assume that every product sold under the Nest name is included. Google’s later models, including the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E, are identified separately in Google support guidance and are not part of this specific cutoff, subject to normal account and setup requirements.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) + Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) - Obsidian
  • Nest’s smartest, most advanced thermostat yet, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a beautiful, brilliant way to save energy, keep your home comfortable, and help make sure your heating and cooling systems are running smoothly[4]
  • Savings you can count on: The Nest Learning Thermostat can help save up to 31% on heating and cooling bills[2]
  • Improved compatibility: It works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump, and radiant, and no C wire is required for installation in most homes; visit the Nest Compatibility Checker for more info[5]
  • Easy control in the Google Home app: Adjust on your phone from anywhere[1] or by using your voice with Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant smart speaker[3], it’s easy to install yourself and it’s Matter compatible for simple integration into your smart home[5]
  • Beautiful design: With a 60% larger display[11] and Dynamic Farsight, you can see info from across the room[1]; choose the design, like a clock or the weather; it automatically adjusts brightness for the best readability or you can adjust manually

Use Google’s support notice and device-identification guidance to check the model, serial number, software version, and other identifying information. Appearance alone is not a reliable way to distinguish generations.

What stopped working?

The change primarily removes the thermostat’s cloud-connected functions rather than its basic heating and cooling controls.

Stopped or discontinued Still available locally
Nest app connection Changing the temperature at the thermostat
Google Home app connection Switching temperature modes
Remote temperature and setting changes Adjusting settings on the device
Google Assistant control Managing auto-schedule settings locally
Notifications Running existing preset schedules
Home/Away Assist Normal HVAC control, assuming the thermostat and HVAC equipment remain functional
Multi-device Eco-mode control
Nest Protect connection and associated emergency shutoff functionality
Software and security updates

Google says existing schedules should continue uninterrupted. That should be understood as a local feature, not a promise of indefinite reliability: the thermostat and HVAC system must continue operating normally, and you can no longer depend on the app to edit the schedule or notify you of problems.

Is the old Nest thermostat bricked?

No—not completely. It is more accurate to call it a largely offline thermostat. You can still use the controls on the wall to change the temperature, switch modes, and adjust available settings. Existing schedules may also continue running.

However, it no longer delivers the connected experience that made it a smart thermostat. You cannot rely on remote access, phone-based changes, voice control, notifications, Home/Away automation, or Nest Protect emergency shutoff integration. Google also says the devices will no longer receive software or security updates, so keeping one in service is a compromise rather than a fully supported long-term solution.

An old display that shows a connection status such as “Connected” or “None” does not prove that app-based remote control has returned. The support cutoff applies even if the thermostat itself still displays normally.

Why Nest Protect owners should pay special attention

If an affected thermostat is connected to Nest Protect devices, that connection is no longer available. In particular, the thermostat-related emergency shutoff functionality will not operate after the support change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nest Protect does not necessarily lose every function it has as a smoke and carbon-monoxide alarm. The important distinction is that its connection to the unsupported thermostat—and the associated thermostat shutoff behavior—has ended. Owners should account for that loss when deciding whether to keep the old thermostat.

Does moving from a Nest account to a Google account fix the problem?

No. Account migration can matter for supported Nest products and Google Home integration, but it does not restore cloud support to first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats. The cutoff is tied to the affected hardware generations, not simply to the type of account being used.

What should owners do now?

Option 1: Keep using the thermostat locally

Keeping it may be reasonable if you are comfortable making changes on the wall, do not need remote access, have a stable HVAC system, and accept that the thermostat receives no future security updates.

This is the lowest-cost option, but it is not equivalent to continuing the old product normally. App control, notifications, Assistant commands, connected automation, and Nest Protect integration are gone. If the thermostat fails, finding a used first- or second-generation replacement is not a sensible way to restore supported service.

Option 2: Replace it with a current Nest

A current Nest is the most direct choice if you want to stay with Google Home and retain app and voice control. Google’s US Store listed these prices on August 18, 2026; prices and promotions can change:

Google Nest Learning Thermostat - 3rd Gen - Programmable Smart Thermostat for Home - Compatible with Alexa (Stainless Steel)
  • Programmable smart thermostat that learns your schedule and the temperatures you like and programs itself to help you save energy and stay comfortable
  • Home/Away Assist automatically adjusts itself to an Eco Temperature after you leave, so you don’t heat or cool an empty home; remote control lets you change the temperature from anywhere on your phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
  • With Energy History, just check your phone to see how much energy you used and why, or use Quick View on the display to reach Energy History, settings, or your schedule; the Nest Leaf appears when you choose a temperature that saves energy
  • Smart thermostat with HVAC monitoring, which looks out for your heating and cooling systems; sends an alert if something doesn’t seem right, along with helpful reminders to make maintenance easier[2]
  • The Nest Learning Thermostat works with the Nest Temperature Sensor (sold separately) to help make sure a certain room is the exact temperature you want it to be
Model Observed US price Best fit Important limitation
Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen $279.99 Owners wanting the most capable current Nest, room sensing, and broader HVAC support Higher upfront cost; compatibility still must be checked
Nest Thermostat $129.99 Owners wanting a lower-cost Google Home thermostat Does not support the Nest Temperature Sensor and works with fewer HVAC configurations

The fourth-generation Learning Thermostat includes one second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor, supports Matter-compatible smart-home control, and is designed for many 24-volt systems. Google says a C wire is not required in most homes, but that is not a universal installation guarantee.

The basic Nest Thermostat uses the Google Home app and does not support the Nest Temperature Sensor. Google says it works with approximately 85% of HVAC systems, but individual compatibility matters more than the headline percentage. Some heating-only, cooling-only, zone-controlled, and heat-pump systems may require a C wire or Nest Power Connector.

Option 3: Switch brands

A different thermostat may make more sense if Google’s support policy has reduced your confidence, you want another smart-home platform, or you prefer a local-first or privacy-focused system. European owners who received Google’s regional communication may have been offered a 50% discount on a Tado Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit, but eligibility and availability vary by country. See Google’s regional announcement and verify current terms locally.

A third-party thermostat is not automatically a drop-in replacement. HVAC wiring, voltage, heat pumps, dual-fuel systems, multiple heating or cooling stages, zoning, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilation equipment can all affect compatibility.

Compatibility checklist before buying

  • Identify the HVAC system type: gas, electric, oil, heat pump, radiant, or another configuration.
  • Record the number of heating and cooling stages.
  • Check for dual-fuel equipment, zoning, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, or ventilation controls.
  • Use the manufacturer’s compatibility checker rather than relying on the old Nest wiring alone.
  • Confirm whether the replacement requires a C wire, power connector, or other adapter.
  • Check regional availability, app support, and smart-home compatibility.
  • Use professional installation if you are uncertain about wiring or have a complex HVAC system.

Do not assume that because the old Nest worked, every current thermostat will use the same terminals or support the same equipment. Turn off HVAC power before any permitted installation work, and use a qualified technician when the system or wiring is unfamiliar.

What happened to Google’s replacement discount?

Google’s published offer was not a permanent upgrade program. Eligible users in the United States were offered a fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat for $149.99; the Canadian offer listed CA$219.99. Google described the offer as nearly 50% off, distributed individualized communications, and applied household and device-count limits. More than three affected devices required contacting Google Support.

The stated redemption deadline was December 31, 2025. That deadline has passed, so current readers should not treat the discount as generally available. Owners with multiple affected thermostats may contact Google to ask whether an exceptional remedy exists, but should not assume the original promotion can still be claimed.

What about unofficial revival projects?

Open-source projects and community efforts have explored alternative or local control for unsupported Nest hardware. These are not Google-supported solutions. They may require technical setup, account credentials, hardware changes, or exposure to security and reliability risks. They may also fail to restore safety-related integrations such as the Nest Protect thermostat shutoff behavior.

For most homeowners, an unofficial project should be treated as an advanced experiment—not as a normal replacement or a dependable safety solution. Coverage of such projects is available from Android Central and Tom’s Hardware.

Bottom line for affected owners

The first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats were not remotely turned into useless wall hardware on October 25, 2025. They can still provide local temperature control and may continue running existing schedules. But the app, cloud, Assistant, notification, automation, software-update, security-update, and Nest Protect thermostat-integration features are gone.

Keep the thermostat if wall-only control is acceptable and the system is reliable. Replace it if remote access, connected automation, security support, or Nest Protect integration matters. Before buying, identify the exact HVAC system and verify compatibility—especially for heat pumps, zoning, accessory controls, and C-wire or power-connector requirements.
