Google Discontinued Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock: What Owners Need to Know

Google stopped manufacturing Nest Protect smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms and began ending sales of the Nest x Yale Lock on March 28, 2025. Existing devices were not immediately bricked: Google said Nest Protect would continue receiving security updates and working through each alarm’s expiration date, while existing Nest x Yale Locks would continue receiving security updates without interrupting lock functionality.

The practical difference is important. Nest Protect owners must plan replacement around the expiration date printed on each physical alarm. Nest x Yale Lock owners do not need to replace a functioning lock solely because production ended, but should account for its legacy app, bridge and support dependencies.

What Google actually discontinued

Google’s March 28, 2025 portfolio announcement covered two different changes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Nest Protect: Google stopped manufacturing new smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. Existing units remain supported through their individual expiration dates.
  • Nest x Yale Lock: Google and Yale ended new sales, with remaining stock available through the Google Store and retailers while supplies lasted.

This was not an immediate service shutdown or remote disabling of either product. Google separately clarified that support for existing Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock devices was not ending at the time of the announcement.

Nest Protect: keep using it until its expiration date

A working Nest Protect should not be discarded solely because Google no longer makes it. Google says existing alarms will continue receiving security updates and operating through their expiration dates. However, that date belongs to each individual alarm, not to the Nest Protect product family as a whole.

Second-generation Nest Protect alarms have a 10-year product lifetime, but the correct replacement deadline depends on the unit’s manufacture date. Read the date printed on the alarm and follow Google’s replacement guidance. Do not keep an expired alarm indefinitely just because it still powers on: smoke and CO sensors have finite service lives.

The Google Store now marks Nest Protect as no longer available and points owners toward First Alert’s Smart Smoke & CO Alarm.

Does Nest Protect still work in the app?

Google’s support material says Nest Protect remains supported even though it is no longer sold. Alarm operation and app features are separate considerations:

  • Local operation: the alarm’s sensors, sounder and local interconnect can continue working independently of a cloud service.
  • App functions: phone alerts, status, testing and other connected features depend on the supported Google Home/Nest setup and network connection.
  • Mixed installations: compatible First Alert alarms can work alongside Nest Protect units, but compatibility depends on the exact model and installation.

Google documents that the First Alert SC5 can communicate with Nest Protect so compatible alarms can relay smoke or CO events. Do not assume that every First Alert or BRK alarm has the same compatibility; check the exact model in the Google setup documentation.

The most practical Nest Protect replacement: First Alert SC5

The First Alert SC5 Smart Smoke & CO Alarm is Google’s clearest replacement path for households that want to remain in Google Home. It is offered in battery and hardwired versions, works with the Google Home and First Alert apps, and is marketed as compatible with the existing Nest Protect base plate. First Alert also describes the SC5 as working alongside Nest Protect devices.

Before ordering, verify:

  • whether you need the battery or hardwired model;
  • the exact base plate and wiring arrangement;
  • interconnect compatibility with every alarm in the home;
  • local electrical, building and life-safety code requirements; and
  • the product’s certifications and installation instructions.

The SC5 is an ecosystem-compatible successor, not necessarily a feature-for-feature clone of Nest Protect. Pathlight, voice prompts, app behavior and other conveniences should not be assumed to transfer identically.

Other option: Kidde smart alarms

Kidde’s smart smoke and CO products offer phone alerts, whole-home alarm activation and compatibility with platforms including Google Home and Alexa on selected models. They may suit households seeking another brand or broader platform options. They should be treated as an alternative alarm system, however—not as a documented direct Nest Protect interconnect replacement unless the specific model says so.

Nest x Yale Lock: existing owners are not required to replace it now

Google said existing Nest x Yale Locks would continue receiving security updates without interrupting lock functionality. A functioning lock therefore does not need to be replaced merely because production and sales ended.

The keypad remains the key local fallback. If the lock loses its network connection, a valid keypad code may still operate the lock, while remote unlocking, app control, notifications and cloud-dependent features may be unavailable. Google’s support documentation also notes that app functionality depends on the supported connection and bridge arrangement.

The Nest Secure complication: Nest Connect may be required

The 2025 Nest x Yale discontinuation is separate from the earlier shutdown of Nest Secure. Nest Guard can no longer act as the Wi-Fi bridge for a Nest x Yale Lock. Owners who previously used Nest Guard must use a Nest Connect instead.

Practical scenarios:

  • Lock connected through Nest Connect: this is the relevant supported bridge arrangement after Nest Secure’s shutdown.
  • Lock connected through Nest Guard: migrate the lock to Nest Connect.
  • Lock offline: the keypad may remain usable, but remote app control and notifications may not work.
  • Buying used: confirm that a compatible Nest Connect, mounting hardware, reset procedure and account-transfer process are available.

The replacement for Nest x Yale Lock: Yale Smart Lock with Matter

Yale positions its Smart Lock with Matter as the next-generation Google Home-oriented product. Matter provides broader smart-home interoperability, and the lock can use Thread through an appropriate Matter hub.

Examples of compatible Google hubs listed by Yale include the Google TV Streamer 4K, Nest Hub Max, second-generation Nest Hub and Nest Wifi Pro. Google’s compatible-device directory also emphasizes that Matter devices require a compatible hub.

Before buying, check the door’s deadbolt dimensions, backset, thickness, keyway configuration and regional compatibility. Also confirm that the hub supports the intended Matter and Thread setup. The Yale lock is not a firmware update for the Nest x Yale Lock, and feature parity should not be assumed. Passcodes, guest access, schedules, notifications, history and automations can vary by lock model, app, hub and platform.

Other smart-lock alternatives

A Yale Assure Lock 2 or another Matter-certified lock may be a better fit for households seeking Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home or SmartThings compatibility. “Works with Google Home” does not necessarily mean that every legacy Nest x Yale function is available. Compare the exact model, module, hub requirements and regional feature support.

Replacement decision matrix

Need Best direction Main caveat
Replace expiring Nest Protect units while staying with Google Home First Alert SC5 Verify exact interconnect, base plate, wiring and code compatibility.
Use a different smart-alarm ecosystem Kidde smart alarm May require replacing more of the alarm network and may not interconnect with Nest Protect.
Replace a Nest x Yale Lock for Google Home Yale Smart Lock with Matter Requires a compatible Matter hub and is not feature-identical.
Buy original Nest x Yale hardware Remaining or used stock Discontinued product, legacy dependencies and less certain long-term support.
Maximize cross-platform lock compatibility Matter-certified lock Features vary by model, platform, hub and region.

Should you buy leftover or used units?

Nest Protect

Usually, no. A used or old-stock alarm may have little remaining sensor life, and its manufacture or expiration date may be unclear. Consider one only if the date provides substantial remaining service life, the model is appropriate for the installation and the price reflects the risk. Never compromise required alarm coverage for a discontinued smart-home feature.

Nest x Yale Lock

Possibly, but only with a meaningful discount and careful compatibility checks. Confirm the lock’s condition, included bridge, mounting hardware, battery compartment, reset status, warranty and return policy. A historical Google Store signal showed a price “from $249,” but that is not a guaranteed current US price or availability.

As of the August 16, 2026 snapshot, Nest Protect was no longer available through the Google Store. Remaining Nest x Yale inventory was retailer-dependent and volatile. Treat listings as discontinued hardware, not as current products with the same future support horizon as a newly sold Matter lock.

What owners should do now

  1. Nest Protect: record the expiration date of every alarm and replace each unit by its own deadline.
  2. Replacing an alarm: select battery or hardwired SC5 as appropriate, then verify base, wiring, interconnect and local-code requirements.
  3. Mixed alarm system: confirm that the exact First Alert model supports communication with the existing Nest Protect installation.
  4. Nest x Yale Lock: keep a functioning lock if its local keypad and required access methods remain reliable.
  5. Bridge check: if the lock relied on Nest Guard, migrate it to Nest Connect.
  6. Replacement lock: choose Yale Smart Lock with Matter or another suitable Matter-certified model only after checking door fit and hub requirements.
