Sumac wood stands out for its green-and-gold annual rings, distinctive grain, and a reported glow under black light. WOOD Magazine described these features in its February 20, 2017 article, “Glow Little Glow Wood.” The article does not identify the botanical species, so its observations should not be treated as traits of every sumac or every board.
What makes sumac wood distinctive?
WOOD Magazine describes sumac’s annual rings as alternating green and gold, giving the wood a striking natural color. The appearance also changes with the way a board is sawn.
| Cut | Figure described by WOOD Magazine |
|---|---|
| Quarter-sawn | Resembles zebrawood. |
| Flat-sawn | Has a swirling, eddy-like figure. |
These are visual comparisons from the magazine’s 2017 description, not a specification for every piece sold as sumac.
How do carvers use its grain?
The article says carvers use the grain to create a layered look. It also reports that green sumac can be carved with little worry about checking as it seasons. That is a woodworking observation, not a guarantee: the article does not name the species or establish that every board will behave the same way under different drying conditions.

Why does sumac wood glow under black light?
WOOD Magazine reports that sumac carvings appear lavender, yellow, chartreuse, and pale blue under black light. It does not identify the wood’s species, measure the effect, or explain its physical mechanism. The reported colors should therefore be understood as the magazine’s description of the carvings it discussed, not a promise that all sumac glows or that every piece shows the same colors.
A UV black-light flashlight can be used to look for the reported effect. The article gives no wavelength or device recommendation, and its account is descriptive rather than a controlled test.
