The easiest reliable approach is a short routine, not a one-time fix: confirm snails or slugs are active, remove damp hiding places, collect them regularly, and protect vulnerable beds with a continuous copper barrier. Use labeled bait only if those steps are not enough.

First, make sure snails or slugs are the problem

Go out after dark or early in the morning, when they are more likely to be active. Look for the animals themselves and for shiny slime trails. Holes in leaves alone do not confirm snails or slugs; other pests can cause similar damage. This scouting approach is recommended by UC IPM in “Snails and Slugs — Home and Landscape” and Cornell IPM in “Slug and Snail Control.”

A flashlight or headlamp can make an after-dark check easier, but any light you already have will do. Oregon State University Extension also recommends using a light when searching.

Make the garden less inviting

Snails and slugs use cool, damp places to hide during the day. Clear away boards, stones, weeds, unused pots and plant debris near vulnerable plants. Where practical, improve sunlight and airflow. Water in the morning or use drip irrigation so the garden is less likely to stay wet overnight. These steps reduce attractive shelter and moisture, but they do not remove every pest; repeat them as needed.

#1 Best Overall
Garden Safe Slug & Snail Bait Granules, Kills Slugs & Snails, 2 Lb
  • KILLS SLUGS & SNAILS: Slugs and snails begin to die within three to six days after bait is ingested.
  • FOR LAWNS, GARDENS & GREENHOUSES: Use on the lawn or on the soil around any outdoor ornamentals, vegetable gardens, fruits, berries, citrus and crop plants where slug or snail control is needed.
  • CONTAINS IRON PHOSPHATE: This bait contains a combination of iron phosphate, which is a plant nutrient that occurs in soils, with slug and snail bait additives.
  • CAN BE USED AROUND PETS & WILDLIFE: Iron is an essential mineral for plants and animals, but large amounts are toxic to slugs and snails when ingested.
  • FOR ORGANIC GARDENING: Always read the entire label and follow all directions and precautions.

Collect the pests consistently

Hand-pick small or localized infestations

For a limited problem, inspect affected plants after dark or early in the morning and remove any snails or slugs you find. Check frequently at first. UC IPM recommends daily checks initially, then weekly checks after numbers noticeably decline.

Use a board to gather them

Place a board slightly above the ground near the affected area. Snails and slugs may gather beneath it, where you can collect them the next morning. Check and clear it often; a trap that is left unattended does not remove the pests it has gathered.

Corry's Slug and Snail Killer Bait 3.5 Pounds
  • Slug and snail bait kills slugs and snails in 3 to 6 days
  • People and pets can enter the area immediately after slug bait is applied
  • Slug and snail killer remains effective after rain
  • Corrys slug and snail killer can be used on lawns, vegetable and fruit gardens, ornamentals, and more
  • Snail killer for garden is also ideal for vegetable gardens, up to and including the day of harvest

Keep beer and yeast traps in perspective

These traps can catch nearby animals, but UC IPM says their attraction range is only a few feet. The bait needs replenishing every few days, so they take ongoing attention and are not a garden-wide solution.

Protect a vulnerable bed with copper

Copper flashing or tape can help exclude snails and slugs from a raised bed, planter or other vulnerable planting. UC IPM recommends a band four to six inches wide around gardens. For vertical screening, it recommends a barrier at least two inches tall, with part of it buried below the soil.

Corry's Slug and Snail Killer Bait 1.75 Pounds
  • Slug and snail bait kills slugs and snails in 3 to 6 days
  • People and pets can enter the area immediately after slug bait is applied
  • Slug and snail killer remains effective after rain
  • Corrys slug and snail killer can be used on lawns, vegetable and fruit gardens, ornamentals, and more
  • Snail killer for garden is also ideal for vegetable gardens, up to and including the day of harvest
  1. Remove snails and slugs already inside the bed before installing the barrier.
  2. Fit copper continuously around the area, closing gaps and preventing pests from crawling under or around it.
  3. Check the barrier over time and clean tarnished copper as needed.

A barrier only protects the area it fully encloses; it does not clear an infestation already inside.

Compare the practical options

Method Best use Effort and limits
Habitat cleanup and morning watering Reducing favorable shelter and moisture across a garden Repeat as needed; it does not remove every pest. (UC IPM; Cornell IPM)
Nighttime hand-picking Small infestations and accessible plants Direct, but requires regular inspection. (UC IPM; Rutgers NJAES)
Board or pot trap Concentrating pests for collection Requires frequent checking and removal. (UC IPM; Rutgers NJAES)
Beer or yeast trap Catching nearby pests Attracts only within a few feet, according to UC IPM, and needs replenishing every few days.
Copper barrier Excluding pests from a bed, pot or vulnerable planting Must be continuous and correctly sized; clear pests from inside first, and clean tarnished copper as needed. (UC IPM)
Iron phosphate bait Optional treatment within an integrated approach May take several days to about a week; follow the label and combine it with habitat measures. (UC IPM; Rutgers NJAES)

Use bait only when other steps are not enough

If damage continues after you reduce shelter and moisture and collect pests, consider a bait that is labeled for snails or slugs where you live. UC IPM identifies iron phosphate and ferric sodium EDTA as options; it names Sluggo and Slug Magic as trade-name examples of iron phosphate products. Formulas and labels can vary, so check the active ingredient and follow the exact product directions and local requirements.

Garden Safe Slug & Snail Bait Granules, Kills Slugs & Snails 2 Lb, 6 Pack

Bait is not a substitute for habitat management. UC IPM cautions: “Baits can be helpful but by themselves don’t provide adequate control in areas that contain plenty of shelter, food, and moisture.” UC IPM also notes that iron phosphate bait can take several days to about a week to work.

Take particular care with metaldehyde products: UC IPM, Cornell IPM and Rutgers NJAES identify pet or wildlife concerns. Do not assume a product is safe around pets; use only as its label directs and account for your household and local requirements.

Skip remedies that do not hold up well

  • Crushed eggshells and coffee grounds: UC IPM says they have not been shown to deter snails and slugs.
  • Diatomaceous earth: It can act as a dry barrier, but UC IPM notes that it loses effectiveness when damp, limiting its usefulness in many gardens.
  • Salt: Avoid applying it; UC IPM says it increases soil salinity.
  • Natural predators: Birds, toads and ground beetles may eat snails or slugs, but UC IPM says most are rarely effective enough to provide satisfactory garden control on their own.
  • Releasing predatory decollate snails: Do not treat this as a general home remedy. UC IPM notes restrictions in California and risks to native mollusks.

A simple routine to follow

  1. Check affected plants after dark or early in the morning; look for active snails or slugs and slime trails before assuming leaf holes prove the cause.
  2. Remove likely hiding places such as boards, pots, weeds and plant debris. Water in the morning or use drip irrigation.
  3. For a small problem, hand-pick pests or place a raised board nearby and collect what gathers beneath it the next morning. Check daily at first.
  4. If a vulnerable raised bed needs protection, clear pests from inside and fit a continuous copper barrier with no gaps.
  5. If damage continues, consider a locally labeled bait while continuing to reduce shelter and excess moisture.
