Crickets in the House? Fix the Entry Points, Moisture, and Hiding Places

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have crickets in the house, start with removal, then fix the conditions that invited them in. Vacuum the active insects, place sticky traps along walls to find the traffic pattern, reduce damp hiding areas, and seal the gaps at doors, windows, utility penetrations, crawl-space access points, garage edges, and foundation cracks. Spraying visible crickets without doing that work usually buys a few quiet nights, not a solved problem.

On our job sites, we treat indoor crickets as a building-envelope and moisture clue first. A single cricket near a patio door may be random. Repeated sightings in a basement, garage, laundry room, or crawl-space area usually mean there is a gap, a damp zone, exterior shelter, or a lighting pattern pulling them toward the house.

The right approach is simple: identify the cricket, remove what is inside, inspect the house in three zones, seal access points, dry out damp areas, clean up exterior habitat, and use labeled pest-control products only where they fit the problem. That is the same basic integrated pest management approach used by extension services and the EPA: identify, monitor, prevent, and then treat in a targeted way.

First, Identify What Kind of Cricket You Have

Most homeowners are dealing with one of three common indoor types: house crickets, field crickets, or camel crickets. You do not need a microscope-level identification, but the type tells you where to focus your repairs.

House crickets

House crickets are usually light brown or tan, often around 3/4 inch long, and they chirp. They are attracted to warmth and light, so they often show up near doors, windows, garages, basements, and utility rooms. They can feed on fabrics, paper, crumbs, pet food, and organic debris.

Field crickets

Field crickets are typically darker, often black or very dark brown, and may be slightly larger. They commonly move indoors in late summer or fall when outdoor conditions change. Bright exterior lights near doors and garage openings can pull them toward the house at night.

Camel crickets

Camel crickets, sometimes called cave crickets, are humpbacked, wingless, long-legged, and do not chirp like house crickets. They prefer damp, dark spaces. If you are seeing camel crickets in a basement, crawl space, sump area, storage room, or under a slab-adjacent stair, assume you have a moisture or access issue until proven otherwise.

That distinction matters. If the problem is camel crickets, scented repellents and random indoor sprays are the wrong center of gravity. You need to inspect damp masonry, crawl-space humidity, access doors, foundation gaps, plumbing penetrations, drainage, and stored materials.

Remove the Crickets You Can See Tonight

Fast control starts indoors. This is not the whole solution, but it stops the noise and gives you better information.

Use a strong vacuum with a hose attachment along baseboards, under appliances, around floor drains, inside garage corners, near basement sill plates, behind storage bins, and around utility penetrations. Empty the vacuum outside when finished. If you have a bagless vacuum, dump the canister into an outdoor trash bag and tie it closed.

Then place sticky traps as diagnostic tools, not just as traps. Put them along walls because crickets tend to travel edges rather than cross open rooms. Good locations include both sides of an exterior door, garage-to-house door, basement window wells, mechanical room corners, laundry room walls, crawl-space access doors, and behind storage shelves. Check them after 24 to 48 hours. The trap with the most activity tells you where to inspect first.

Clean up food sources while you are there. Sweep crumbs, close pet food containers, avoid leaving pet bowls out overnight during an active problem, and remove cardboard stacks or damp paper storage from basements and garages. Crickets do not need a dirty house to survive, but clutter gives them cover and makes inspection slower.

Use a Three-Zone Inspection: Indoors, Envelope, Exterior

The most reliable cricket inspection moves from the inside out. We use the same logic when troubleshooting water, air leaks, and pests: find the symptom, find the path, then find the exterior condition that keeps feeding the problem.

Zone 1: Indoors

Start at night because crickets are more active after dark. Walk the house with a flashlight and listen before turning on every light. Inspect basement corners, floor drains, sump pits, laundry rooms, mechanical rooms, garage edges, under sinks, under stair storage, and crawl-space access points.

Look for moisture first. A $10 to $25 hygrometer is useful in basements and crawl-space-adjacent rooms. If indoor relative humidity is regularly above 50 to 60 percent, crickets and other moisture-loving pests have a better environment. Look for condensation on pipes, damp block walls, musty storage boxes, sweating ductwork, stained drywall, or active leaks.

Zone 2: Building envelope

Close exterior doors during daylight and look for light. If you can see daylight at the threshold, bottom corners, hinge jamb, latch jamb, or top corners, crickets can usually pass through. A gap as small as 1/8 inch deserves attention, especially at the corners where weatherstripping compresses or pulls away.

Check basement windows, torn screens, garage door side seals, garage bottom gaskets, crawl-space access panels, siding penetrations, cable and refrigerant-line entries, hose bibs, vents, and the sill plate where the wall framing meets the foundation. In older homes, the problem is often not one dramatic hole. It is 10 to 30 small defects that add up.

Zone 3: Exterior habitat

Outside, inspect within 3 to 6 feet of the foundation. Tall grass, wet leaves, thick mulch, firewood, stored lumber, trash bins, plant pots, and plastic storage containers create cool, damp cover. If those conditions sit next to a door, window well, crawl vent, or foundation crack, you have a cricket staging area.

Also look at lighting. Bright white lights beside doors and garage openings attract house and field crickets. Switch frequently used exterior fixtures to yellow or amber bulbs, use motion sensors or timers, and avoid leaving bright lights on all night directly beside entry points. You still need safe lighting; the goal is to reduce insect pressure at the door.

Seal the Places Crickets Use to Get In

Exclusion is the durable fix. University extension guidance consistently points homeowners toward sealing cracks, repairing screens, correcting door gaps, and closing penetrations. From a contractor’s standpoint, this is where the job either succeeds or becomes a recurring nuisance.

For doors, start with the sweep and the weatherstripping. Most replacement door sweeps cost about $15 to $30. Adhesive or screw-on weatherstripping commonly runs about $15 to $35 per door. A five-piece top-and-sides door seal kit is often in that same general range. Install it so the door closes firmly without binding, and check the bottom corners after installation. Those corners are a common failure point.

For cracks and small gaps, use the right material. Acrylic latex caulk is fine for many interior trim gaps, but exterior penetrations need exterior-rated sealant, polyurethane sealant, silicone where appropriate, or pest-blocking foam depending on the location. Caulk is commonly $5 to $12 per tube. Exterior-rated sealant or foam often runs $8 to $20 per tube or can. Avoid filling drainage paths, weep holes, combustion-air openings, or appliance exhaust/intake vents.

For screens, repair tears and loose frames. Basic screen repair kits often cost $10 to $25. Basement window screens and crawl-space access screens are easy to overlook because they are not part of everyday living space, but they are often close to damp ground and exterior lighting.

For garages, inspect the large overhead door. The bottom gasket should compress evenly across the slab. Side seals should touch the door without leaving daylight. If the slab slopes or the door is out of adjustment, a new gasket may help, but a door service company may need to adjust the track or door position.

Fix Moisture Before You Rely on Pesticides

Crickets like cover, but camel crickets especially like moisture. If you are catching them in a basement or crawl-space area, dry conditions matter as much as sealing.

Start with basic water control. Confirm that gutters are clean, downspouts discharge at least 5 to 10 feet from the foundation where the lot allows, soil slopes away from the house, and mulch is not piled against siding or foundation vents. Indoors, repair plumbing leaks, sweating supply lines, condensation around ducts, and damp storage zones.

In a basement, a portable dehumidifier may be enough. Many homeowners can keep relative humidity near 45 to 50 percent during humid months with a properly sized unit and a drain hose routed to a safe floor drain or condensate pump. Smaller units can cost a few hundred dollars; larger basement or crawl-space dehumidifiers can exceed $1,500.

In a crawl space, be more careful. Vapor barrier material is commonly cited around $0.30 to $0.70 per square foot as material, while installed vapor barriers often run about $2 to $4 per square foot. Full crawl-space encapsulation can run roughly $3,000 to $12,000 or more depending on size, barrier thickness, drainage, mold remediation, electrical work, vent treatment, and dehumidification.

Do not simply seal crawl-space vents because crickets are getting in. Crawl-space ventilation and foundation openings are governed by building code and local practice, and closing them incorrectly can trap moisture, worsen mold, and create wood-decay conditions. If a crawl space needs encapsulation, vent sealing, mechanical drying, or drainage improvements, that is a building-science project, not just a pest project.

Clean Up the Exterior Habitat

Outdoor cleanup is not cosmetic. It changes the conditions around the structure so crickets have fewer places to hide before they enter.

Cut tall grass and weeds along the foundation. Move firewood, scrap lumber, stored materials, and unused planters away from exterior walls. A practical target is at least 18 to 24 inches of clear inspection space against the foundation, with larger storage piles moved several feet away where possible.

Thin heavy mulch. Mulch is useful for landscaping, but thick, wet mulch against the house gives crickets, ants, roaches, and other pests a protected path. Keep mulch below siding and trim clearances, avoid burying weep screeds or siding edges, and do not mound it against door thresholds or window wells.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean window wells and stairwell drains. Wet leaves in a basement window well can hold moisture beside a window frame for weeks. If that frame also has a torn screen or loose sealant, crickets have shelter and access in the same place.

Use Pesticides Carefully and Only Where They Fit

There are times when a labeled crack-and-crevice or perimeter treatment makes sense, especially for heavy seasonal pressure. But pesticides should be the last layer, not the only layer.

Read the label first. The pesticide label is the legal instruction for where and how the product may be used. Do not apply outdoor-only products indoors. Do not mix products to make them stronger. Do not spray food-prep surfaces, pet areas, bedding, children’s play areas, floor drains, or HVAC openings unless the label specifically allows it.

For most homes, targeted applications are more sensible than broad indoor spraying. A clean exterior perimeter treatment works better after leaves, mulch clutter, and debris are pulled back because the product can reach the travel path. Indoors, use only products labeled for indoor crack-and-crevice treatment, and keep applications tight to voids, baseboard gaps, and other permitted locations.

Cost to Get Rid of Crickets in 2026

The cheap part is killing or trapping the crickets you see. The more valuable work is keeping them out, and that may involve weatherstripping, sealant, drainage correction, screen repair, lighting changes, or crawl-space moisture control.

Item or Service Typical 2026 Cost Best Use
Sticky traps $5-$15 per pack Monitoring traffic and catching active crickets
Caulk $5-$12 per tube Small cracks and interior gaps
Exterior sealant or foam $8-$20 per tube or can Exterior-rated gaps and penetrations
Door sweep $15-$30 Daylight gaps under exterior doors
Door weatherstripping $15-$35 per door Jamb and top gaps around doors
Screen repair kit $10-$25 Torn window, basement, or vent screens
Amber or yellow exterior bulbs $5-$20 each Reducing attraction near doors and windows
One-time pest-control visit About $108-$341 nationally Active infestation or targeted treatment
General insect treatment About $100-$500 Varies by severity, size, and product used
Installed crawl-space vapor barrier About $2-$4 per sq. ft. Moisture control in accessible crawl spaces
Full crawl-space encapsulation Roughly $3,000-$12,000+ Persistent damp crawl-space conditions

Professional pest-control pricing varies with home size, slab versus crawl-space or basement construction, number of entry points, infestation severity, regional labor rates, accessibility, and whether follow-up visits are included. A simple one-time visit may be close to the national averages above. A full exclusion and moisture job can cost much more because it becomes a repair project, not just an insecticide visit.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when

You have seen a small number of crickets, the source area is obvious, and the repairs are accessible. A homeowner can usually handle vacuuming, sticky traps, replacing a door sweep, adding weatherstripping, repairing a screen, switching exterior bulbs, trimming vegetation, and sealing a few visible cracks. For many homes, a $50 to $150 weekend of materials makes a noticeable difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Call pest control when

Call a licensed pest-control professional if you see crickets nightly, hear persistent chirping in walls or inaccessible areas, find repeated trap activity after sealing obvious gaps, or have a large infestation in a basement, garage, or crawl-space area. Pest pros are also useful when product selection matters because of children, pets, health concerns, or complicated indoor locations.

Call a contractor when

Call a contractor when the issue points to building defects: rotted door jambs, failed thresholds, large garage gaps, damaged siding, foundation cracks, loose crawl-space doors, missing vent screens, poor drainage, damp framing, or chronic crawl-space moisture. A pest-control visit can reduce the active population, but it cannot rebuild a failing threshold or correct drainage beside the foundation.

For persistent crawl-space cricket issues, the best answer may involve both trades: pest control for the active infestation and a contractor for access, sealing, vapor barrier, drainage, or dehumidification work.

Safety, Code, and Permit Notes

Do not block weep holes, wall drainage paths, dryer vents, bath fan vents, combustion-air openings, furnace or water-heater intake/exhaust terminals, or crawl-space ventilation openings without a code-compliant plan. Those openings may look like pest access points, but they often exist for drainage, ventilation, or combustion safety.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use corrosion-resistant screen or hardware cloth only where it is appropriate and does not restrict required airflow. If a vent serves an appliance or combustion-air function, follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and local code before adding any screen or cover.

Pesticides should be used according to the label, with the listed personal protective equipment and re-entry instructions. Professional applicators are licensed or certified under state requirements. If a treatment requires restricted-use products or specialized application, it is not a DIY job.

A Practical 7-Day Cricket Plan

Day 7: Recheck traps. If activity has dropped sharply, keep monitoring weekly for a month. If traps are still catching crickets in the same area, that area needs deeper inspection or professional help.

Bottom Line

The best way to get rid of crickets in your house is to treat the house as a system. Remove the crickets inside, then take away the access, moisture, light attraction, and sheltered exterior habitat that keeps sending more in.

If the issue is one door sweep or a torn screen, the fix may be under $50. If the source is a damp crawl space, poor drainage, or a failing building envelope, the real solution costs more, but it also protects the home from problems bigger than crickets: mold, rot, air leakage, and other pests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I suddenly have crickets in my house?

Crickets usually enter because outdoor conditions changed, exterior lights attracted them, or the house has easy access points. Common entry spots include door thresholds, garage seals, basement windows, crawl-space doors, utility penetrations, torn screens, and foundation cracks. Camel crickets often point to damp basements or crawl spaces.

What is the fastest way to get rid of crickets indoors?

Vacuum visible crickets and likely hiding areas first, then place sticky traps along baseboards and near doors, garages, basements, and crawl-space access points. That removes active insects and shows where they are moving. After that, seal the entry point or the problem will continue.

Do crickets cause damage inside a home?

They can. House and field crickets may chew fabrics, paper, stored items, and organic debris. The bigger concern is often what their presence tells you: gaps in the building envelope, damp storage areas, exterior clutter, or crawl-space moisture.

How much does professional cricket control cost in 2026?

A one-time pest-control visit commonly falls around $108 to $341 nationally, with broader general insect treatments often around $100 to $500 depending on home size, infestation severity, region, chemicals used, and follow-up visits. Exclusion repairs and moisture work can cost more.

Can I seal crawl-space vents to keep crickets out?

Do not seal crawl-space vents casually. Crawl-space ventilation and foundation openings are tied to code, moisture control, and building performance. If the crawl space needs vent sealing or encapsulation, it should be done as a planned moisture-control project with proper drainage, vapor barrier, and dehumidification where needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I call pest control or a contractor for crickets?

Call pest control for persistent nightly sightings, large infestations, inaccessible voids, or households where pesticide selection requires extra care. Call a contractor when you find rotted thresholds, failed door seals, foundation gaps, damaged screens, poor drainage, damp crawl spaces, or other building defects that are letting crickets in.
