To set up an Emerson TV, first identify the exact model, connect the correct power and source cables, install the remote batteries, complete the initial setup wizard, and select the input that matches your device. The menu wording varies considerably between current EmersonAudio televisions and older Emerson LCD, LED, and CRT models, so do not assume every Emerson TV is a smart TV or uses the same ports.
1. Identify your Emerson TV before connecting anything
Find the model number on the rear or side label, original box, or manual. It may look like ET-2400, ET-5000K, ESTD-2400, or an older LC, LE, or LF-series designation. Use that number when checking the manual, replacement remote, power requirements, inputs, and wall-mount specifications.
Current EmersonAudio models are not identical. The ET-1300 is a portable television with AC, 12-volt car, and rechargeable-battery options; the ET-2400 uses an AC adapter; and the ET-5000K uses a conventional AC power connection. Do not interchange adapters or power cords unless the exact model documentation confirms that they are compatible. See the ET-1300 specifications, ET-2400 specifications, and ET-5000K specifications.
2. Check the TV and prepare its location
- Confirm that the screen, stand or mounting hardware, power cable or adapter, and remote are present.
- Inspect a secondhand TV’s casing, screen, cord, plug, and ventilation openings before use.
- Install the supplied stand on a stable, level surface, or use a wall mount rated for the television’s weight.
- For wall mounting, verify the exact VESA pattern, screw size, wall construction, mount rating, and cable clearance in the model documentation. The ESTD-2400 product page lists VESA 100 × 100 support, but that specification should not be assumed for other models.
- Leave ventilation space around the television and keep it away from moisture and heat sources.
- Position the TV before removing protective film. Keep it unplugged while attaching the stand and connecting cables.
3. Connect the source before powering on
Choose the section that matches how you plan to watch television. Connect only the cables your setup requires.

Antenna or over-the-air television
- Connect the antenna’s 75-ohm coaxial cable to the port labeled ANT, RF IN, ANTENNA IN, or similar.
- If the antenna has an amplifier, connect and power its amplifier or USB/power adapter.
- After turning on the TV, choose Air, Antenna, or Terrestrial during channel setup.
- Run the automatic channel scan and wait for it to finish.
A scan can find only stations receivable at that location. Moving the antenna, removing a weak splitter, powering an amplifier, or rescanning after repositioning may help; changing a menu setting cannot create a signal that is not reaching the TV.
Cable connected directly to the TV
- Connect the provider’s coaxial cable to ANT IN or RF IN.
- Select Cable rather than Air or Antenna in the setup menu.
- Run the channel scan.
This works only for channels the provider supplies in a format the television’s tuner can receive. Many cable services require a separate box.
Cable or satellite box
- Connect an HDMI cable from the box’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the Emerson TV.
- Turn on the box and the television.
- Press SOURCE, INPUT, or the remote’s input-selection button.
- Choose the HDMI port used, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
Do not run a TV channel scan for channels supplied through an HDMI box. The box supplies the channels; the Emerson television only displays the box’s output.
Streaming player, console, computer, or Blu-ray player
Connect the device to HDMI, connect its own power supply, and select the matching HDMI input on the TV. This is often the best option for older Emerson televisions that do not have built-in streaming software. Roku, Google TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, consoles, computers with HDMI output, and Blu-ray players generally use this arrangement, but the external device’s remote may still be needed for apps, accounts, and playback.
Do not label every Emerson model a smart TV. Emerson markets the ESTD-2400 as a smart TV/DVD model, while the ET-2400 and ET-5000K product information emphasizes conventional inputs and television tuners rather than a named streaming platform. Check the exact model before expecting Wi-Fi apps or screen mirroring.
Older DVD players, VCRs, and game systems
Use the television’s yellow video and red/white audio inputs when they are present. Select AV, Video, or Composite after connecting the device.
Some compact Emerson televisions combine composite input in a 3.5-mm jack and require a model-specific breakout cable. Do not force a standard yellow-red-white cable into a port that is not designed for it. The ET-1300 lists AV input and includes an A/V cable, while the ET-5000K lists CVBS and RCA inputs; port arrangements differ by model.

Soundbar, receiver, or headphones
Use only an output provided by your model, such as a 3.5-mm headphone jack, optical digital output, coaxial digital output, or analog audio output. The ET-5000K lists optical audio and headphone output; the ET-2400 lists coaxial digital audio and headphone output. These connections are not interchangeable.
Recommended Free Tools
After connecting a soundbar or receiver, open the audio settings and select the appropriate output if the TV provides that choice. For headphones, check whether the television automatically mutes its speakers or requires a separate setting.
4. Install the remote batteries and turn on the TV
- Open the remote’s battery compartment.
- Install the battery type specified for your model, matching the + and – markings.
- Close the compartment and remove any insulating battery tab.
- Aim the remote at the television’s infrared sensor and press POWER.
The ET-5000K quick-start guide specifies two AAA batteries, but do not assume every Emerson remote uses the same batteries. Replacement remotes are also model-family specific: EmersonAudio lists different compatibility groups for ET, ETS, ETD, ET-1300, and ET-7000 televisions. Check the model number before ordering a replacement from the official remote-control page.
5. Complete the first-time setup wizard
On many models, the first power-on displays an initial setup wizard. The exact screens and labels vary, but the normal sequence is:
- Choose the menu language.
- Select the time zone.
- Choose a time format if offered.
- Set daylight-saving time if offered.
- Choose Air/Antenna or Cable.
- Start the automatic channel scan.
- Wait until the scan reaches completion or reports the number of channels found.
- Confirm the result, then open the source menu if you are using an external device.
The official ET-5000K quick-start guide shows this general sequence, including language, time zone, time format, daylight-saving time, and Air/Cable selection. Older Emerson sets may instead use menu names such as Initial Setup, Auto Channel Preset, Autoprogram, or Setup.
6. Select the correct input
Channel scanning and input selection are separate operations. Press SOURCE, INPUT, or the equivalent button and select the connection currently in use.
| Connected source | Typical TV source |
|---|---|
| Antenna or direct cable | TV, DTV, Air, or Cable |
| Cable or satellite box | HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or another occupied HDMI input |
| Streaming player, console, computer, or Blu-ray player | Matching HDMI input |
| Older DVD player, VCR, or game system | AV, Video, or Composite |
| USB media | USB, if supported |
| Built-in disc player | DVD, on applicable models such as the ESTD-2400 |
If the screen says No Signal, first verify that the TV is on the input connected to the powered device. “No Signal” usually indicates a source, cable, power, or compatibility problem—not automatically a failed television.

- The functions are 100 percent as the same as the original.
7. Make the basic picture and sound adjustments
- Picture mode: Try Standard, Movie, Sports, or the closest available option.
- Brightness and contrast: Adjust these if the picture is too dark, washed out, or difficult to see.
- Picture size: Use FORMAT, ASPECT, or PICTURE SIZE to correct cropping or black bars.
- Sound: Check volume, mute, balance, and the selected audio output.
- Closed captions: Turn captions on or off in the accessibility or setup menu.
- Digital audio: Choose the correct optical or coaxial output mode when using an external audio system.
Do not assume that a particular Emerson TV supports HDR, Dolby Vision, ARC/eARC, variable refresh rate, or automatic low-latency mode. Confirm such features in the manual for the exact model.
8. Troubleshoot common setup problems
The TV has no power
- Confirm that the power cord or model-specific adapter is fully connected.
- Try a known-working wall outlet.
- Check that a power strip or surge protector is switched on.
- For the ET-1300, verify the selected power method and charge the internal battery if using battery operation.
- Do not substitute another adapter based only on a matching plug.
The remote does not respond
Check battery polarity, install fresh batteries, remove any shipping tab, and aim directly at the TV’s infrared sensor. Clear objects from the line of sight and try from closer range. If using a replacement, confirm that it supports the exact model family rather than buying a generic Emerson remote.
The channel scan finds zero channels
- Run the scan again and choose Air for an antenna or Cable for a direct cable feed.
- Confirm that the coaxial cable is attached to ANT IN or RF IN.
- Power an amplified antenna.
- Remove or test around a splitter, combiner, or long cable run.
- Move the antenna and rescan.
- If you use a cable box, stop scanning and select the box’s HDMI input instead.
There is no signal from an HDMI device
- Press SOURCE and select the HDMI port actually used.
- Confirm that the external device is powered on.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI port and another cable.
- Power-cycle both the TV and the source device.
- Set the source device to a conventional output such as 720p or 1080p if it is using an unsupported resolution or refresh rate.
- Test the device on another display to separate a source problem from a TV problem.
Older televisions may also encounter HDCP compatibility problems, particularly through converters, splitters, or adapters.
There is picture but no sound
- Make sure the TV is not muted and raise its volume.
- Raise the external device’s volume where applicable.
- Check the red and white audio cables for an AV connection.
- Check the source device’s HDMI audio setting.
- Unplug headphones temporarily.
- Confirm that the TV’s selected audio output matches the soundbar or receiver connection.
The picture is stretched, cropped, or distorted
Try the TV’s aspect-ratio or picture-size control, then check the output resolution on the connected device. A Standard or Native output can help. Remove unnecessary HDMI converters or splitters while testing.
The TV returns to initial setup every time
Complete the wizard without interrupting power and check whether the settings save. Repeated setup may result from power interruptions or a model-specific fault. Because reset procedures differ, use the manual for the exact model rather than applying an unverified service-menu sequence. Older Emerson troubleshooting documentation treats recurring initial setup as a distinct fault condition.
9. Find the correct manual and support information
Use the model number—not merely the Emerson brand name—to locate instructions. The EmersonAudio technical-support page is the best starting point for current EmersonAudio products. Older sets may require their original manual or a model-specific archive.

The EmersonAudio warranty page states that coverage depends on model prefix and screen size. Its listed policy includes 90 days of labor and one year of parts for the television categories shown, with shipping terms that vary by screen size and destination. It lists (866) 411-6292 for support and separate handling for locations outside the lower 48 states. Confirm the current policy for your model before shipping a television.
