Cleaner, more repeatable mortises come from a few fundamentals: align the hollow chisel and auger correctly, clamp the work, test the setup on matching stock, and keep the cutters sharp. For deeper cuts, clear chips in stages and follow your machine’s manual for lubrication and maintenance.
How a hollow-chisel mortiser cuts
A hollow-chisel mortiser uses an internal auger bit to remove most of the waste, while the surrounding square chisel pares the sides and corners. The bit needs room to cut before the chisel enters the wood; poor spacing or alignment can make cutting harder and affect the mortise.
How to set up a mortising machine
Align the chisel and bit
-
Install the chisel square to the fence and secure it. Follow the machine’s manual if it gives a different setup procedure.
-
Set a small clearance between the chisel tips and the auger bit. WOOD Magazine and Lee Valley use the thickness of a dime as a practical reference, but the machine maker’s instructions take precedence. WOOD Magazine; Lee Valley Tools.

JET Benchtop Mortiser, 1/2" Chisel, 4-3/4" Stroke, 115V 1Ph (Model JBM-5)- Column is reversible for mortising larger stock
- Long, multi-position mortising handle let you reposition the feed handle for easier operation and optimum handle position
- Powerful 1/2-HP motor provides consistently smooth performance
- Quick adjust depth stop for uniform mortise depths
- Removable On/Off toggle switch prevents accidental or unauthorized use of the tool
-
Make a test cut in scrap matching the project stock. Check the mortise width, depth, and position before cutting the workpiece.
Set depth and position for repeat cuts
Use the fence’s micro-adjustment, stops, or a suitable fixture to position repeated mortises consistently. On a sliding-table setup, establish drilling depth before setting the table’s travel, as Lee Valley advises. Confirm the layout against the project rather than relying on the machine scale alone.

- Heavy-duty reversible handle can be installed to either side of the head without tools
- Two integrated bit and chisel spacers for quick set up
- Inline depth stop allows stopping at preset depths without racking the bit to the base
- Large, hinged chuck door with magnetic catch provides rapid access to the chuck
- Integrated chisel and tool holder with sharpening stone (chisels sold separately)
The chisel and bit geometry can leave a slightly uneven mortise bottom. WOOD Magazine suggests setting depth 1/8 inch beyond the tenon length as one way to prevent the bottom from keeping the joint from seating fully. Treat that as a workaround to verify on test stock, not a universal joint-design rule.
Hold the work securely and manage the workflow
Clamp the workpiece firmly before cutting; unsecured timber can move into the cutter. For repeated work, use the machine’s fence stops or a suitable fixture. WOOD Magazine describes magnetic hold-down jigs on a cast-iron base as one optional approach; check that both the base and the workpiece are suitable before using them.

The mortise and tenon machine is heavy duty for its weight 47.06lbs. Our mortiser machine is covered in greases, preventing from rust. Furthermore, we made the package outermost a wood case to protect the mortising machine for making sure that you can get a wood mortiser in a decent condition when it arrives
- 【High-Efficiency & Powerful】: CXRCY Wood Mortise Machine boasts a pure copper motor (3/4 HP, 3400RPM, 550W), which is strong enough to make quick and clean cuts accomplishing intricate mortising work ad improving your woodworking projects, delivering exceptional performance for precise and accuracy mortising tasks
- 【Easy to Assemble & Use】- It is very easy to set up the benchtop mortiser, which only takes several minutes to install some attachhments. And the mortiser comes with a manual, providing relative information for you. With 3 sharpen chisel bits (1/4", 1/2", 3/8") and the reversible column, the mortise machine can easily make clean cuts
- 【Labor-Saving & Safety】- With a gear transmission and long handle, this mortiser machine from CXRCY saves your time and effort, allowing for smooth and labor-saving operation. It is equipped with a thick transparent shield to protect from flying wood chips
- 【Wide Application】- CXRCY Mortise Machine can be widely used in woodworking for making round holes, square holes and rectangles holes in wood with different thicknesses
Woodsmith recommends marking the mortise layout from both edges and using an alternating hole pattern to reduce deflection. It also suggests pausing between repeated cuts to let tools cool and making cleanup passes if ridges or compacted chips remain. A shop-built X-Y sliding table is another way to position repeated cuts, but it requires a fixture suited to the machine. Woodsmith’s mortising setup tips.
Clear chips during deeper cuts
For the General International 75-040, the manual advises cutting in several stages and backing the chisel out periodically—roughly every 3/8–1/2 inch of depth—to let chips escape. It also recommends placing scrap under the work when cutting through to help reduce exit tear-out. These are model-specific instructions; follow the manual for the mortiser you are using. - Gas cylinder controlled rack and pinion system for smooth head raising and lowering
- Handwheels control smooth linear and cross table motions
- Hinged chuck door allows easy access for quick bit changes
Keep the auger and chisel sharp
Dull cutters reduce mortiser performance. Fine Woodworking’s sharpening guidance covers honing the chisel’s outside faces and bevels and tuning the bore so chips can travel up the auger. Bevel angles vary by maker: the article reports 60° for Clico and Asian/Japanese-sourced chisels and 45° for Forest City chisels. Do not apply either angle to an unidentified chisel; check its maker’s specifications first. Fine Woodworking, “Master the Mortiser”.
The General International manual says sharpening frequency depends on use, material, and mortise size and depth. It describes using a sharpening cone matched to the chisel size and warns against removing material from the chisel’s outside edge, which would change its dimensions. Confirm replacement cutters match your mortiser’s shank and chisel dimensions before buying.

Clean and lubricate according to the machine manual
Instructions for lubricating mortiser columns and ways differ. WOOD Magazine recommends a lubricant that dries without residue for many dovetailed columns, noting that oily residue can attract dust. The General International 75-040 manual instead calls for a very light coating of all-purpose oil on its dovetail ways. Use the lubricant specified for your machine rather than treating either recommendation as universal.
The 75-040 manual also recommends clearing dust and chips, inspecting the cord, plug, chisel, and bit, and replacing chipped or damaged cutters. Disconnect and lock out power before cleaning, maintenance, or repairs, following the machine maker’s instructions.
Use the right protective measures
WorkSafe New Zealand identifies contact with the chisel or auger, moving timber, noise, dust, and unexpected movement during maintenance as mortiser hazards. Its guidance calls for secure clamping, keeping guards in place where applicable, operating the machine with its handles, and using eye, hearing, and respiratory protection with dust extraction. Follow your local safety requirements and the machine maker’s instructions.
WorkSafe New Zealand says 85 dB(A) is a safe noise level over an eight-hour day and cautions, “A mortiser may exceed this noise intensity.” The page does not state a publication year. WorkSafe New Zealand: Mortisers.
