A solar eclipse briefly reduces the sunlight reaching your garden, but the evidence cited here does not show that the event harms garden plants or requires special care. You do not need to cover, move, or water plants just because an eclipse is happening. If you like, treat it as a chance to observe how light and local conditions change.
What happens to a garden during a solar eclipse?
An eclipse blocks some sunlight, reducing the solar energy that reaches the ground. How noticeable that change is depends on the eclipse at your location: during totality, the landscape can grow dark like dawn or dusk, while a partial eclipse may make the sky only slightly darker. Clouds and local conditions also affect what you see. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory explains that an eclipse, like clouds, blocks sunlight and reduces solar energy reaching the ground (Measuring Solar Energy During an Eclipse).
During totality, temperature may drop by about 10°F (5°C), according to NASA’s FAQ; the estimate depends on humidity and cloud cover. It is a possible local environmental change, not a universal forecast or a plant-damage threshold (NASA’s Total Solar Eclipse FAQ).
Will the eclipse hurt plants, or should you protect them?
The sources cited here do not establish that a brief eclipse harms garden plants, and they offer no eclipse-specific care protocol. NASA explains that light is important to plant processes, but its general plant-light guide does not show that the temporary change during an eclipse causes damage (NASA eClips Real World: Light Plants Need Educator Guide).

There is no evidence here to support covering plants, moving containers, or changing your watering routine solely because of an eclipse. Continue ordinary care based on the plants’ actual needs and the weather. NASA’s eclipse education materials encourage observing environmental changes, but do not quantify a garden-plant response or predict how particular species will behave (NASA, “Observing the Eclipse”; NASA, “What to Expect: A Solar Eclipse Guide”).
How to observe the change in your garden
If you want to document the event, compare conditions before, during, and after the eclipse. NASA JPL describes measuring light in lux and comparing eclipse readings with full-sun readings. A phone sensor may be enough for a simple observation; a dedicated meter is optional, not a plant-protection tool.

- Optimize Performance: Deploy the covers before sunset to harness residual warmth from the soil. Once morning temperatures rise above freezing, remove the covers to permit sunlight warming. Wet covers should be dried before reuse
- Choose a consistent spot in the garden and note the time and sky conditions, including cloud cover.
- Take a light reading in lux before the eclipse, then repeat it during and after the event from the same spot and in the same way.
- Record what you notice about the garden and any visible plant changes, without assuming that one observation proves a general response.
NASA’s educational guidance supports observing changes during an eclipse, but the sources cited here do not provide species-specific predictions. Treat any plant behavior you record as an observation of your garden, not a universal rule.

Do not look directly at a partial eclipse without proper solar viewers or use an indirect projection method. Ordinary sunglasses are not adequate. NASA notes that gaps between tree leaves can project crescent-shaped images of the partially eclipsed Sun onto the ground, offering a way to notice the eclipse without looking at it directly (NASA, “March 29, 2025, Partial Solar Eclipse”).
