Frost heave happens when repeated freezing and thawing moves soil and pushes shallow-rooted plants upward. For lawns, there is no proven one-step frost-heave fix: check for lifted or damaged turf, then address compaction, drainage or other site problems before reseeding. Mulch advice for perennial crowns should not be treated as a lawn treatment.
What frost heave does to plants and lawns
Iowa State University Extension describes frost heaving as repeated freezing and thawing at the soil surface that can push shallow-rooted perennials upward. Newly planted perennials are especially vulnerable if their roots have not established before winter. When crowns and roots are exposed, they face cold and drying winds as well as potential injury. (Iowa State University Extension)
The same freeze-thaw movement can disturb soil around turf, but the available extension guidance does not establish a lawn-specific prevention protocol or quantify how often lawn damage is caused by frost heave. If turf looks raised, loose or patchy after winter, inspect the site and soil rather than assuming frost heave is the only cause.
Which winter prevention advice applies to lawns?
Iowa State recommends leaving healthy plant debris in place over winter to insulate susceptible perennials, then applying 3 to 4 inches of mulch over their crowns after the ground freezes. The mulch is gradually removed in early spring as the soil begins to thaw. The extension explains: “The mulch helps prevent the soil surface from heating up and cooling down during sunny winter days or periods of warm temperatures mid-winter.” These are perennial-care recommendations, not directions to cover a lawn with mulch. For perennial beds, the same guidance advises avoiding late-season cultivation that disturbs roots and late-season planting. It does not show that these measures prevent frost heave in turf.
Diagnose the lawn before repairing thin or bare areas
Patchy turf may reflect a condition that reseeding alone will not fix. Wisconsin Extension identifies compaction, heavy clay, poor drainage and poor site preparation as possible underlying problems. Maryland Extension adds that compaction reduces air space and slows drainage, while wet soil is more vulnerable to further compaction. (Wisconsin Extension; Maryland Extension)

- Compaction: Soil has limited air space and water drains slowly; consider core aeration if compaction is the issue.
- Persistent wetness or poor drainage: Reduce avoidable water loading, such as excess runoff from downspouts, and keep foot and equipment traffic off wet turf. Aeration alone cannot correct soil saturation.
- Thin turf after the cause is addressed: Overseeding may fill sparse areas, using seed and timing suited to local climate and turf recommendations.
- Widespread problems: Extensive weeds or broad soil and site issues may require renovation rather than simply overseeding. (Maryland Extension)
Choose the repair for the problem
| Problem | Useful next step | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Compacted soil | Consider hollow-tine core aeration; Wisconsin Extension notes adequate soil moisture is important. | Aeration targets compaction; it is not a guaranteed frost-heave remedy. (Wisconsin Extension) |
| Wet or saturated soil | Limit traffic while wet and manage excess water, including runoff from downspouts. | Aeration cannot solve every saturation problem; some persistently wet sites may be better suited to plants other than turf. (Maryland Extension) |
| Sparse or bare patches | Once underlying conditions are corrected, overseed with locally suitable grass seed. | Seed and timing recommendations depend on local climate and turf guidance. (Maryland Extension) |
| Extensive weeds or widespread soil problems | Assess whether lawn renovation is more appropriate than spot overseeding. | Overseeding alone may not resolve extensive underlying problems. (Maryland Extension) |
Time aeration and overseeding for your region
Follow local recommendations rather than applying one calendar date everywhere. For Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension says overseeding should be completed by early September so new grass has time to establish before hard freezes. That timing is specific to its Wisconsin guidance, not a universal deadline. (Wisconsin Extension)
Maryland Extension also describes overseeding as an option for sparse areas, while noting that extensive weeds or widespread soil problems can call for renovation instead. (Maryland Extension)
