Why the house is architecturally distinctive
A postwar Usonian design
In 1949, Henry and Frieda Neils asked Wright to design a “one story modern functional house” for their family on lakeside lots adjoining their earlier home. Correspondence between Henry Neils and Wright documented design and construction discussions, including materials and building details. The house was built in 1951.

The National Register nomination describes the home as a distinctive, well-developed example of Wright’s postwar Usonian work. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Materials and reported features
The nomination highlights the unusual combination of cull, or scrap, marble and clear Western larch, as well as aluminum doors and windows. It notes that Neils could access the materials through business connections. CBS Minnesota reports a massive fireplace, built-in furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows, varied ceiling heights, angled or tapering walls, and a walk-out terrace overlooking Cedar Lake.
David Stickney of Stickney Real Estate, associated with the sale, told CBS: “You really feel like you are one with nature at this property.” He also said, “This is not one you would want to replicate today, just with the cost to build and the materials that were used.”
