Its fragrant flowers open in late afternoon or evening. In cold-winter areas, treat it as an annual or lift its tuberous roots for winter storage; keep the plant, especially its seeds and roots, away from children and pets because ingestion can be harmful.
How do you grow four o’clock flowers?
Choose a location with full sun—defined by North Carolina State Extension as at least six hours of direct sunlight daily—and soil that drains well. Four o’clock tolerates some partial shade and a range of soils, but the sources do not promise the same flowering in shade as in full sun. Fertile or humus-rich soil supports growth, though good drainage is the consistent priority.
Keep the soil moderately moist after planting and during active growth. North Carolina State Extension describes the plant as moderately drought-tolerant, but watering needs vary with rainfall, soil, and climate, so check the soil rather than following a fixed schedule. The plant is semi-woody and deciduous where it persists as a perennial, with tuberous roots below ground. North Carolina State Extension lists a typical mature size of 18 inches to 4 feet tall and 12 to 24 inches wide.
How can you start or propagate it?
Four o’clock can be grown from seed or propagated by dividing established plants. Seed is a straightforward way to start a new planting; division is an option when you already have a mature plant.

Starting from seed
- In cold-winter regions, wait until frost danger has passed before sowing outdoors. Use local frost dates rather than a nationwide calendar date.
- Soak seeds overnight to help speed germination. Wisconsin Extension also notes that nicking the seed surface is an option.
- Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep. Wisconsin Extension says light aids germination.

Dividing an established plant
Established plants can be divided. If you need to dig or handle the roots, wear gloves: the University of Florida IFAS reports that root handling may irritate skin.

When do four o’clock flowers bloom?
The fragrant flowers open in late afternoon or evening and typically fade by morning, though the exact time they remain open can vary with local light and conditions. Flower colors include red, magenta, pink, yellow, white, and multicolored. Hummingbirds and moths visit the flowers, making four o’clock a useful choice for an evening garden or a pollinator planting.
Should you leave it in the ground or store the roots?
That choice depends on winter conditions where you garden. Four o’clock may persist as a perennial in mild climates, while cold can kill its tuberous roots; in colder places, it is commonly grown as an annual unless the roots are lifted and stored. Regional examples illustrate the variation: North Carolina State Extension describes it as an annual in western North Carolina and perennial in most Piedmont or coastal gardens; Wisconsin Extension calls it a tender perennial hardy to zone 9a; Florida IFAS describes it as perennial in Florida, with winter dieback in North and Central Florida. These regional descriptions are not guarantees for every site—local winter lows and soil drainage matter.

Overwintering roots in a cold-winter area
- Before the first fall freeze, dig up the tuberous roots.
- Store them indoors over winter.
- Replant in spring after the danger of frost has passed.
If your climate allows the roots to survive outdoors, lifting and storing them is optional.
Is four o’clock poisonous to dogs, cats, or children?
Do not treat four o’clock as edible. Wisconsin Extension identifies the roots and seeds as poisonous if ingested; Florida IFAS reports possible stomach pain and nausea and advises keeping the plant away from children and curious pets. Singapore’s National Parks Board also identifies ingestion as a hazard and describes the seeds as extremely poisonous. Keep the plant and stored seeds out of reach, and seek professional poison-control or veterinary advice if ingestion occurs.

Can four o’clock spread in the garden?
Spread depends on region. Florida IFAS warns that four o’clock can spread aggressively in the warmest parts of Florida, while Wisconsin Extension notes that it self-seeds and has naturalized in parts of the southern United States. To limit unwanted seedlings, remove them as they appear and take off spent seed heads. Check local guidance for your area if you are concerned about its spread.
