Plan the bed around those needs rather than treating the flowers as a universal ranking of the hardest plants to grow. The planting and temperature recommendations below come from Edward Bowring’s 2025 Homes & Gardens article; local frost dates and conditions should guide when you use them.
Plan the bed before sowing
Start with the site, not the seed packets. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends assessing sunlight, temperature, soil and drainage before choosing annual flowers. It defines full sun generally as six or more hours of direct sunlight; too little light for a plant’s needs can reduce flowering or lead to leggy or stunted growth. Its annual-flower guidance also notes that clay soil holds water longer than sandy soil, which can need more frequent watering. Let rainfall and soil conditions—not a rigid calendar—inform watering, and use a soil test rather than guessing at fertilizer needs.
Give climbers a place for support before they are tall enough to be awkward to manage. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s cut-flower guidance says spacing varies by species and recommends supporting tall or top-heavy plants before they outgrow their supports. Reserve the sunniest spots for flowers that need full sun; where local conditions suit it, Nicotiana can go in partial shade and moisture-retentive soil. Avoid keeping the entire bed uniformly wet: drainage, soil texture, weather and heat all affect how quickly it dries.
For a practical layout, group the plants by the main work they require: sowing care for snapdragons and Bells of Ireland, moisture and heat management for Nicotiana and sweet peas, and climbing room plus a long season for morning glory. These are useful planning categories, not a scientific difficulty ranking.

Nicotiana: sow on the surface and manage moisture
Flowering tobacco (Nicotiana) can suit a spot with full sun to partial shade. Bowring recommends planting after frost danger has passed and maintaining consistently moist soil. For seed starting, press the seeds onto the soil surface without covering them and keep them at 72–78°F, the germination range given in his 2025 article.
Bowring reports that moisture-retentive soil and dappled shade worked better in his experience than a dry, exposed south-facing bed. That is a personal growing observation, not a controlled comparison; use your own bed’s drainage and exposure to decide whether partial shade is appropriate.

Sweet peas: give climbers support and avoid excessive heat
Sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) need something to climb. Install an obelisk, teepee or fence before planting so the vines have support as they grow. They prefer full sun and rich, moisture-retentive soil, but excessive heat can stop flowering.
When starting seed, use deep pots or root trainers to accommodate their deep roots. Protect newly sown seeds from mice, and keep plants supplied with moisture and nutrients. Bowring notes that soaking seeds or nicking their hard seed coat can speed germination. These are ways to address the seed’s tough exterior, not a guarantee of a particular germination time.

Snapdragons: leave their tiny seeds uncovered
Snapdragon (Antirrhinum) seeds need light to germinate, so sow them on the surface rather than burying them. Bowring recommends sowing in fall or early spring, or starting them in modules 8–10 weeks before the last frost. His article gives a germination temperature near 70°F.
Once plants flower, remove spent stalks just above a leaf node to encourage new blooms. The sowing window is expressed relative to the last frost, not as a fixed calendar date; check a local cooperative extension or botanical garden for timing suited to your location.

Morning glory: allow a long season and room to climb
Morning glory (Ipomoea) is a climbing annual that needs a long growing season and a sunny, sheltered position. Bowring recommends sowing about six weeks before the last frost and choosing a site with at least six hours of sun daily. Because it climbs, provide a structure or other suitable support as part of the bed layout.
Water regularly after planting. Once established, water when the soil is dry rather than following a fixed schedule. Avoid high-nitrogen feeding after flowering begins: it can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers. Deadhead faded flowers late in summer.

Bells of Ireland: allow time for slow germination
Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis) can be slow and unpredictable to germinate. Bowring recommends cold stratification or direct sowing in early spring; soaking seed overnight is another suggested preparation. For indoor germination, he gives a temperature range of 65–68°F and says seedlings may take up to 21 days to appear.
Starting seeds in modules can make transplanting easier because the plant develops a taproot. After planting out in full sun, Bowring recommends spacing plants around 12 inches apart. Treat that spacing as his cultivation guidance, not as a universal requirement for every cultivar or site.
Adapt the recommendations to your location
Last-frost timing varies by region, and the date-based sowing advice above is not a ready-made calendar for every garden. Check local frost guidance before sowing or planting out. Virginia Cooperative Extension also cautions that “There is no ‘stress-free’ environment, and no totally stress-resistant bedding plant.” A well-planned bed can reduce avoidable stress, but weather, drainage and local growing conditions still matter.
The detailed species recommendations here are from one gardening article, and its personal observations should be understood in that context. Extension guidance helps with general site assessment and support planning; it does not provide species-specific spacing recommendations for all five flowers.
