Can a software update fix 9C8?
Possibly—but only for eligible models. Samsung issued a critical software repair for certain 2021–2022 top-load washers. Eligibility depends on the exact model and serial number; not every Samsung washer displaying 9C8 belongs to this group.
Wi-Fi models: update through SmartThings
For a compatible Wi-Fi washer, Samsung’s general process is:
- Install or open the SmartThings app and sign in with a Samsung account.
- Add the washer to SmartThings.
- Select the washer from the device list.
- Open More options using the three vertical dots.
- Select Information.
- Choose Firmware Update or Software Update, if shown.
- Select Update Now.

Non-Wi-Fi models and the update dongle
Most non-Wi-Fi washers do not generally receive updates, but Samsung identifies a specific group of 2021 and 2022 top-load models that may require a Samsung-provided dongle.

Use a dongle only when Samsung confirms that your exact washer is eligible and supplies the correct device. Samsung’s instructions generally involve unplugging the washer, inserting the dongle into the connector—typically beneath a cover near the upper-right rear area—restoring power, waiting for the completion indicators, and removing the dongle only after the update finishes.
Do not use a generic USB device, third-party firmware tool, or unofficial update. If SmartThings cannot connect or the update will not complete, contact Samsung with the model and serial number.
Check the power installation safely
Although Samsung classifies 9C8 as a software overcurrent error—not as the ordinary voltage-error category—it is still sensible to check basic installation conditions:
- Make sure the washer is plugged directly into a properly grounded outlet.
- Do not use an extension cord or power strip.
- Confirm that the appliance is on the circuit required by its installation instructions, rather than sharing an overloaded circuit.
- If the breaker trips repeatedly, stop using the washer and arrange an electrical or appliance-service evaluation.
These checks can identify a power or installation concern, but changing outlets alone cannot diagnose an internal control, wiring, motor-control, or firmware problem. Never defeat the grounding prong or probe energized circuitry unless you are trained and equipped to perform that work safely.

What if 9C8 comes back?
Use this decision path:
- It disappears after the reset: Run a cautious test cycle and monitor the next loads. A temporary disappearance does not prove the fault is gone.
- It returns during a cycle: Stop repeatedly resetting the machine. Record the stage at which it returns and request service.
- It appears immediately after pressing Power: A simple interrupted-cycle fault may not be the whole issue. Arrange professional diagnosis, particularly if the controls are unresponsive.
- The breaker trips: Stop operating the washer. Treat this as an electrical-safety issue.
- There is smoke, odor, scorching, or water damage: Disconnect power safely and obtain urgent service.
- An update is unavailable or unsuccessful: Do not install unofficial software; contact Samsung.
Does the washer need a new control board?
Not necessarily. A persistent 9C8 may ultimately involve outdated or corrupted firmware, the main electronic control board or PBA, motor-control hardware, a wiring or connector fault, an abnormal load-related electrical condition, power quality, or another model-specific failure.
Online reports sometimes describe a main PBA replacement—for example, one community case involving a WA52A5500AC—but that is an individual repair outcome, not proof that every 9C8 requires a board. Board part numbers vary by model and revision. Buying a board based solely on the error code can waste money if the actual fault is wiring, motor control, power, or software.
When to call Samsung service
Samsung’s official recommendation is to request service when 9C8 persists after the reset. Use Samsung’s washer support page to access manuals, warranty information, and repair options.
Professional service is especially appropriate when the code returns immediately, the washer is unresponsive, a breaker trips, the update cannot be completed, the model is not eligible for the known update, or you would need to remove a panel or test live circuitry.
Before contacting support, have ready:
- Full model number and serial number
- Purchase date, if known
- Photo or video of 9C8
- When the code appears
- Details of any outage, move, repair, or update
- Whether the breaker trips or the machine shows physical or odor-related symptoms
- Whether SmartThings reports an available update
Check warranty coverage before purchasing parts or paying for independent work. Coverage and service availability depend on location, model, serial number, and date.
