Designed by Foster + Partners, the computer-generated renderings depict a large, covered venue with three prominent tentpole-like structures. They are illustrative images, not photographs or final approved plans; the club later said its location and masterplan images were indicative only.
What do the first images of the proposed stadium show?
The visuals released alongside Manchester United’s announcement on 11 March 2025 depict a new stadium with three large structures rising above and supporting a surrounding covered area. The images were supplied by the club and credited to Foster + Partners. They communicate the broad architectural concept, but do not establish the final form, materials, construction details or approved design. The club’s announcement introduced the ambition; the Associated Press coverage described the images and reported the estimated project cost.
Is the stadium design final?
No. In its later location announcement, Manchester United said the additional stadium-district and masterplan images were indicative and did not represent final plans. The club’s project page describes feasibility studies as preliminary investigations into whether a project is viable. The material establishes a proposal and ongoing regeneration planning, not a completed design or a construction-ready package.
- Design: associated with Norman Foster and Foster + Partners, but not confirmed as final.
- Approvals and delivery: the available project announcements do not establish planning approval, a complete financing plan, a confirmed construction start or an opening date.
- Images: visualisations of a proposal, not evidence of a stadium already built or of every detail ultimately selected.
Where is the proposed stadium, and what is the wider project?
The proposed new ground is planned beside the existing Old Trafford, at the centre of a wider Stadium District in Trafford Wharfside. Manchester United’s 2026 location announcement describes a 150-hectare mixed-use regeneration masterplan and says the club has secured the majority of the land required. The plan is presented as supported by Trafford Council, the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester.

The club says the wider plan has the potential to contribute £7.3bn per annum to the UK economy. That is a project projection for the broader regeneration area, not a stadium-only return or an independently validated outcome. The location and masterplan announcement, including its indicative images, is available from Manchester United.

The announced capacity would be 25,690 seats higher than the existing ground’s listed capacity. The available announcements do not provide a final seat layout, accessibility specification, transport capacity, environmental performance or financing details, so those features cannot yet be compared reliably.

What does the £2bn figure mean?
The £2bn figure was reported at the 2025 launch as an estimated or projected project cost. It is not evidence of a settled final budget or signed construction contract price. Manchester United’s announcement described the ambition for a new stadium; the Associated Press reported the £2bn estimate alongside the first visuals.

No confirmed date is established in the project material cited here. A five-year construction period was an ambition discussed at the 2025 announcement and reported by the Premier League, not a guaranteed programme or opening date. Jim Ratcliffe described the launch as the beginning of a journey toward a new stadium, while former manager Sir Alex Ferguson said the club should strive for the best in its stadium as well as on the pitch; neither statement fixes a delivery timetable. The Premier League’s announcement coverage reported those comments and the launch context.
