It combines an automatic smoke-vent function with a translucent, multi-wall polycarbonate cover. Bilco says its re-engineered, low-profile cover provides natural daylight and delivers more than 40% better insulation performance than traditional domes.
That 40% figure is a manufacturer claim from a 2012 product data sheet, not an independently verified result in Bilco’s published documentation. The useful design question is therefore not whether every project will achieve exactly 40%, but whether the cover construction, release mechanism, listing information and roof details suit the building’s fire strategy and energy requirements.

What “increased insulation” means for a fire vent
A smoke vent has to perform two jobs that can pull in opposite directions. During normal occupancy it is part of the roof envelope, so its cover should limit unwanted heat flow and admit useful daylight without creating an avoidable comfort or energy penalty. During a fire event it must open automatically so smoke and heat can escape through the roof.
Lumivent addresses the first condition with a multi-wall polycarbonate cover rather than a traditional single-skin dome. “Multi-wall” indicates a cover built with more than one polycarbonate wall and internal separation. Those layers create a more substantial barrier than a simple dome, while the translucent material still serves the daylighting purpose. Bilco describes the cover as low profile and re-engineered, so the product is intended to sit with less visual and aerodynamic bulk than older dome forms.

The insulation improvement is relevant whenever a roof vent is part of a conditioned building. A better-insulated cover can reduce the vent’s contribution to heat loss in cold weather and heat gain in warm weather. It does not, by itself, establish the thermal performance of the complete roof assembly. The curb, flashing, fasteners, seals, surrounding insulation, interior finish and installation quality all remain part of the heat-flow path.
What the Lumivent product is
Bilco markets Lumivent as a daylighting smoke vent: a translucent roof opening that provides natural light in ordinary conditions and functions as an automatic smoke vent in an emergency. The manufacturer says automatic smoke vents aid fire-fighting efforts and promote safer evacuation by removing heat, smoke and toxic fumes from a burning building.
The product description identifies three defining characteristics:
- Daylighting: the cover is translucent, allowing daylight into the space below.
- Smoke ventilation: the assembly is intended to open automatically during a fire event.
- Insulated cover design: a re-engineered, low-profile, multi-wall polycarbonate cover is claimed to improve insulation performance compared with traditional domes.
Bilco also describes UL-listed standard sizes. Bilco’s published material does not provide a dimensional schedule, U-factor, solar-heat-gain coefficient, or a project-specific code approval. Treat “standard size” as an ordering and design starting point, not as proof that a particular opening will fit your roof or satisfy your authority having jurisdiction.
How the cover design can improve thermal performance
Multiple walls versus a traditional dome
A traditional dome is the comparison Bilco uses for its insulation statement. Bilco’s 2012 product data does not identify the exact baseline dome, its material, thickness or test conditions. That matters because “traditional dome” can describe products with materially different thermal properties.

Still, the construction difference is clear enough to guide a design review. A multi-wall panel contains more material and internal separation than a basic dome. In a roof opening, that can increase resistance to conductive heat transfer. The low-profile geometry may also reduce the exposed volume compared with a taller dome, although the actual effect depends on the complete assembly and installation.
Daylight without treating the vent as a skylight
The cover is intended to provide natural daylight, but Lumivent remains a smoke vent first. Daylight quantity, glare, visible transmittance and solar heat gain are not stated in Bilco’s published product information. Do not substitute skylight calculations for smoke-vent requirements, or assume that a translucent cover provides the same optical performance as a dedicated daylighting skylight.
The roof assembly still controls the result
Thermal performance is a system property. A well-insulated cover can be undermined by an uninsulated curb, discontinuous roof insulation, poorly fitted flashing or compressed seals. During design, show the vent curb and surrounding insulation in the roof details, then confirm that the installer can preserve those layers without obstructing the opening mechanism.
How the automatic release works
Bilco says Lumivent uses its Thermolatch II mechanism. The covers release when a UL-listed 165°F (74°C) fusible link melts. This is a passive thermal trigger: the link responds to temperature at the vent rather than relying on electrical power or a manual command.
- Normal condition: the cover remains closed, preserving the roof opening’s weather and thermal barrier while admitting daylight.
- Temperature reaches the link rating: when the fusible link reaches 165°F (74°C), it melts.
- Latch releases: the Thermolatch II mechanism releases the cover.
- Vent opens: the opening provides a path for hot smoke and gases to leave the building, supporting the fire strategy.
The 165°F rating describes the release trigger, not the temperature of the entire building or the time an opening will remain effective. Designers still need to coordinate vent location, free area, make-up air, compartmentation and firefighter access with the project’s fire-protection professionals. Bilco’s published information does not establish activation time, opening angle, aerodynamic free area or wind-performance values.

How to read the “over 40%” insulation claim
The exact wording in Bilco’s 2012 product data is: “Multi-wall, polycarbonate cover design offers over a 40% improvement in insulation performance compared to traditional domes.” The statement identifies the manufacturer, the cover construction and the comparison, but it does not state the test method, baseline product, specimen size, boundary conditions or whether an independent laboratory performed the measurement.
Use the number as a product-development claim rather than a universal design value. It can justify asking for supporting documentation, but it should not be entered into an energy model as a guaranteed reduction unless Bilco supplies a test report that matches the proposed size and assembly.
When requesting substantiation, ask for:
- the definition of “insulation performance” used for the comparison;
- the reported thermal metric, such as U-factor or equivalent resistance;
- the construction and dimensions of the “traditional dome” baseline;
- test laboratory, standard, date and environmental conditions;
- whether the result applies to the complete vent assembly or only the cover panel; and
- any size-, orientation- or installation-specific limitations.
If those details are unavailable, record the figure in the specification as a manufacturer-stated comparison and keep the project’s compliance calculations based on documented assembly values.
Comparison framework for a smoke-vent selection
Bilco’s published product information does not provide a like-for-like performance table. Use the following framework to compare Lumivent with another listed smoke vent without implying unsupported rankings.
| Decision point | Lumivent information | What to verify for an alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Cover construction | Multi-wall polycarbonate; re-engineered low-profile cover | Material, wall configuration, thickness, impact properties and weather seals |
| Insulation performance | Bilco claims over 40% improvement versus traditional domes; test basis not stated | Documented U-factor or test result for the complete assembly and a defined baseline |
| Daylight | Translucent cover intended to provide natural daylight | Visible transmittance, glare and solar-heat-gain data, if daylight is a design objective |
| Release mechanism | Thermolatch II with a UL-listed 165°F (74°C) fusible link | Trigger temperature, listing, reset or replacement procedure and opening behavior |
| Sizes and listing documentation | Bilco describes UL-listed standard sizes; dimensions are not stated here | Exact rough opening, curb dimensions, listing scope and available accessories |
| Project fit | Must be coordinated with the roof assembly and fire strategy | Compatibility with roofing, insulation, structure, drainage and local requirements |
Project workflow: from design intent to installation
1. Define the fire and daylight objectives
Document why the vent is being used. A warehouse seeking smoke-layer relief, a stair enclosure and a production space with daylight may have different opening locations and control requirements. Confirm the vent’s role in the engineered smoke-control strategy before selecting a size.

2. Confirm the roof opening and curb
Obtain the manufacturer’s current dimensional drawing for the selected UL-listed size. Check rough opening, curb height, structural support, roof slope, drainage and clearance around the Thermolatch II hardware. Do not cut the roof from a generic “standard size” assumption.
3. Coordinate insulation and waterproofing
Detail continuous roof insulation up to the curb, then show how the vent frame, counterflashing and membrane terminate. Specify compatible sealants and fasteners from the roofing and vent manufacturers. The goal is to avoid a thermal bridge or leak while leaving the cover free to open.
4. Review the release path
Verify that the fusible link is accessible for inspection and replacement, that no interior finish blocks the opening, and that stored materials or roof equipment cannot interfere with the cover. The 165°F (74°C) link must be the listed component specified for the Thermolatch II mechanism.
5. Obtain current submittals
Request the current product sheet, UL listing information, installation instructions, warranty terms and any thermal test documentation. The 2012 data sheet supports the published insulation claim, but a current submittal is needed to confirm that the supplied configuration has not changed.

6. Inspect and commission
Before handover, compare the installed unit with the approved submittal. Check fasteners, seals, curb connections, cover alignment and fusible-link condition. Record the model, size and link rating in the building’s fire-safety log. Functional testing must follow the manufacturer’s instructions; do not melt or remove a fusible link as an improvised test.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Assuming the percentage applies to every vent
The “over 40%” statement is not a universal allowance. Different sizes, curb conditions and adjacent roof details can change assembly performance. Use project-specific documentation for energy calculations.
Choosing by daylight alone
A translucent cover does not replace a smoke-control analysis. Confirm that the vent’s location and opening characteristics support the life-safety design, even if another location would provide more daylight.
Ignoring the curb as a thermal bridge
Insulating only the cover leaves the frame and curb untreated. Include those components in the envelope detail and inspect continuity during installation.

Using an incorrect fusible link
The release depends on the specified UL-listed 165°F (74°C) link. Substituting a different temperature rating or an unlisted part can alter activation behavior and invalidate the approved configuration.
Treating a standard size as automatically code-compliant
UL listing and standard dimensions do not establish suitability for every jurisdiction or occupancy. The design professional responsible for the project must confirm local code, smoke-control and roof requirements.
Questions to resolve with the manufacturer and design team
- What thermal metric supports the claimed improvement, and is a complete-assembly test available?
- What are the exact outside dimensions, rough-opening requirements and curb details for the proposed size?
- What daylight, solar-heat-gain and condensation information is available for the selected cover?
- How is the Thermolatch II mechanism inspected, reset or serviced after activation?
- Which roof membranes, insulation systems and flashing details are approved for the installation?
- Does the project require additional smoke-control equipment, controls or make-up air beyond the automatic vent?
Bottom-line design judgment
Lumivent’s multi-wall polycarbonate, low-profile cover is a credible way to combine daylighting with an automatic smoke vent while addressing the heat-flow weakness of a basic dome. Bilco’s published claim of more than 40% better insulation performance is useful evidence of the design intent, but it remains a 2012 manufacturer statement without a disclosed test basis in Bilco’s published material. Specify the vent for its complete listed assembly, verify the roof and fire-strategy details with qualified professionals, and request current thermal and dimensional documentation before relying on it for compliance or energy calculations.
