After a fire, do not re-enter your home until the fire department or local authorities say it is safe. Once access is cleared, document damage before discarding anything, contact your insurer for claim-specific instructions, and arrange an appropriate assessment before attempting substantial cleanup. Fire recovery is a sequence: protect people first, preserve information second, and address repairs only when the site can be evaluated safely.
Is it safe to go back into a fire-damaged home?
Not necessarily. Extinguished flames do not establish that a building, its utilities, or the surrounding property are safe. Follow evacuation and re-entry instructions from the fire department or local authorities, and ask them before entering. Ready.gov’s home-fire guidance advises against reconnecting utilities yourself.
- Do not touch wet electrical equipment or stand in water near it.
- If wiring or utilities appear damaged, leave inspection and reconnection to the utility provider, officials, or a qualified professional.
- After a wildfire, avoid hot ash, charred trees, smoldering debris, and live embers. FEMA warns that heat pockets may remain in the ground and can burn people or reignite a fire. Follow local instructions.
FEMA recommends N95 respirator masks in its wildfire guidance to help keep particles out of the air a person breathes. An N95 does not make an unsafe structure safe to enter and does not establish adequate protection for every cleanup task.
What should you do first after authorities allow access?
Photograph the damage and make an inventory
Before moving or discarding damaged belongings, take photographs and create a room-by-room inventory. Include damaged property and, where useful, notes about what you can identify. Ready.gov advises completing the inventory before discarding items; FEMA also recommends photographing property damage.

Contact your insurer and keep receipts
Ask your insurance company for instructions specific to your policy and claim, including how to document losses and what to do to protect the property. Keep receipts for expenses connected with the fire. Coverage, documentation requirements, and whether particular expenses qualify depend on the policy and claim, so do not assume a cost will be reimbursed.
Ready.gov’s wildfire preparedness guidance recommends reviewing homeowners or renters coverage and keeping a record of belongings before a disaster. Having those records can help with documentation if a future loss occurs.

How should you arrange assessment and restoration?
For substantial smoke, structural, or utility damage—or when you are unsure what is affected—seek a qualified local assessment rather than treating the property as an ordinary cleaning job. Ready.gov advises insured residents to ask their insurer about protecting property, making an inventory, and contacting fire-restoration companies.

There is no single cleanup recipe established for every fire-damaged home. The right response depends on the building and the damage. Avoid mixing chemicals or assuming household cleaning will remove soot, smoke residue, or other contaminants safely. Follow your insurer’s instructions and use qualified professionals where the damage is significant or uncertain.

Recovery can involve emotional strain as well as property and financial loss. Ready.gov’s Coping with Disaster guidance describes anxiety, sadness, grief, and stress responses after disasters, and recommends seeking crisis counseling if a family member is struggling. Children, older adults, people with access or functional needs, and people whose first language is not English may need added support.
