Fire-and-Security Glass Door Systems: How to Specify One Tested Assembly

One glazed door can address both fire separation and forced-entry resistance, but only when the complete, tested assembly is documented for both purposes. The door leaf, fire-rated glazing, frame, seals, fixings, hardware and installation details must match the certification. A generic fire-rated pane or a security laminate alone does not create a dual-rated door.

This distinction matters because fire and security ratings measure different hazards. Fire testing asks how an opening protects a compartment or limits heat and flame; forced-entry testing examines resistance to specified attacks. Select the assembly only after confirming the project’s jurisdiction, required fire performance, security threat, opening dimensions, egress arrangement and access-control needs.

What a combined fire-and-security glass door actually is

A combined system is an opening assembly whose exact configuration has evidence for both fire performance and forced-entry resistance. The evidence must cover the components as installed, not merely individual products. That normally means the listed door leaf, glazing, frame, glazing beads, seals, fasteners, hinges, lock or latch, closer, access-control equipment and permitted dimensions.

Manufacturers may describe a system as a “fire-rated glass door system,” “fire and security rated glass door” or “forced-entry security glazing.” Those phrases are useful search terms, not interchangeable classifications. Ask for the formal listing, test report or certification and read its scope.

Why a pane’s rating is not enough

Fire glazing works as part of a tested opening. The frame, edge support, intumescent or other seals, beads, clearances and fixing method affect how the assembly behaves when heated. A security interlayer can improve impact or attack resistance while having no fire approval in the proposed frame. Conversely, a fire door can be unsuitable for a particular forced-entry threat.

UL guidance distinguishes fire-protection-rated glazing from fire-resistance-rated glazing and places installation under certification constraints, NFPA 80 and the manufacturer’s instructions. UK guidance makes the same practical point: glazing must not reduce the door’s fire resistance, and competent installation must be supported by supplier documentation.

What the two ratings measure

Question Fire performance Security performance
Hazard addressed Flame, hot gases and heat passing through an opening during a fire Specified manual or impact attacks intended to force entry or contain occupants
Typical evidence Listed opening-protective or fire-resistance assembly; duration and applicable temperature-rise or hose-stream criteria Forced-entry test method, attack sequence and classification for the tested glazing or door assembly
Scope Only the construction, size, hardware and installation covered by the listing Only the threats, tools, duration and specimen configuration covered by the test
What it does not prove It does not automatically show resistance to burglary attacks It does not make a door fire-rated or guarantee absolute prevention of entry or exit

Fire-protection versus fire-resistance

Fire-protection-rated glazing is generally used in an opening where the primary objective is to stop flames and hot gases for a stated period. Fire-resistance-rated assemblies address a broader barrier function and may include limits on temperature rise and heat transfer. The required category depends on the wall or partition, opening type and locally adopted code. Do not substitute one for the other because both are described as “fire-rated.”

Forced-entry testing is comparative

ASTM E2395-21(2025) is an active voluntary performance specification and laboratory test for forced-entry resistance of glazed window and door assemblies. Its August 20, 2025 update does not turn the result into a universal security guarantee. ASTM F1233-26, updated October 6, 2026, states that its method provides a comparative evaluation of forced-entry and containment resistance and “should not be used to establish or confirm the absolute prevention of forcible entries or forced exits.” That limitation belongs in the design decision and security specification.

Standards you may see in a submittal

ASTM E2395-21(2025)

This specification addresses forced-entry performance of window and door assemblies with glazing impact. Confirm the exact specimen, impact method, dimensions and hardware in the report. A certificate for a window does not automatically cover a door, and a certificate for one size or leaf arrangement may not cover another.

ASTM F1233-26

F1233 is a comparative forced-entry and containment method for security glazing materials and systems. The standard’s own warning rules out interpreting a pass as absolute prevention. Use the reported threat, tools, attack duration and failure mode to decide whether the result matches the site’s risk.

ISO 16936-2:2005 and ISO 16936-4:2005

ISO 16936-2 covers repeated hammer and axe impact at room temperature. ISO 16936-4 specifies security-glazing requirements and mechanical methods for manual attack after thermal and fire stress. ISO says both 2005 editions were reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remain current. Their classifications should not be generalized beyond the conditions stated in the applicable report.

Fire-opening references

A cited 2009 International Building Code excerpt requires fire-protection-rated glazing to be tested to NFPA 257 or UL 9 and to comply with NFPA 80. That is an older code edition, not proof of what a particular city or state currently adopts. The authority having jurisdiction may use a newer IBC edition, a local amendment or another code path.

Documented system examples—and what they do not establish

TGP TGProtect FR

TGP describes TGProtect FR fire-rated door and sidelite systems in 20-, 45- and 60-minute configurations. Its product information says systems are available up to 60 minutes and are Intertek certified to ASTM E2395 for forced-entry performance. Treat those as manufacturer-published configurations, not as a blanket approval for every opening. Request the current listing and shop drawings for the proposed size, glazing, frame and hardware.

ASSA ABLOY FGD1000

An ASSA ABLOY Korean-market page describes FGD1000 as a manually operated fire-rated glass door system for fire-compartment entrances, using 8 mm transparent fire-rated glass and professional installation. The cited information does not establish a forced-entry rating. It therefore cannot be presented as equivalent to a dual-rated assembly without additional security evidence.

Hong Kong government listing

A Hong Kong government document lists a fire-resistant glazing door system with a 60-minute entry and test-report information. That is a jurisdiction-specific listing. It demonstrates fire documentation for that listed context, not security performance or acceptance in another country.

How to specify the right system

  1. Define the fire objective. Identify the wall or compartment rating, whether the opening needs fire protection or fire resistance, the required duration, and any temperature-rise or hose-stream criteria.
  2. Define the security threat. State whether the concern is opportunistic impact, repeated hammer and axe attack, manual attack after fire exposure, or another assessed threat. Name the required test method and classification rather than writing only “security glass.”
  3. Fix the opening geometry. Record single or double leaf, sidelite or transom, clear opening, overall frame size, glass make-up, swing direction and maximum permitted dimensions. Tested sizes are often narrower than a manufacturer’s fabrication range.
  4. Coordinate operation. Document visibility, traffic flow, automatic or manual operation, access-control devices, hold-open functions, panic or emergency exit hardware, and the required closing sequence.
  5. Obtain the complete listing. Ask for the certification or listing identifying door leaf, glazing, frame, seals, beads, fixings and hardware. Require the exact configuration, not a brochure showing a similar door.
  6. Check field changes. Confirm which substitutions, drilling, trimming, glazing replacement and hardware changes are allowed. If a component is changed, obtain written confirmation that the listing remains valid.
  7. Confirm jurisdictional acceptance. Verify the locally adopted building, fire and accessibility codes with the design professional and authority having jurisdiction before procurement.
  8. Assign installation and inspection responsibility. Name the competent installer, identify who will inspect fire-door operation and seals, and retain traceable labels, reports, photographs and as-built drawings.

Hardware, access control and egress

Hardware cannot be selected independently just because a closer, lock or reader is marketed as “fire door” hardware. UL opening-protective guidance treats hardware and access-control arrangements as part of the approved opening. The selected devices must be compatible with the listed assembly and with local egress rules.

For glass doors, UK guidance identifies floor-mounted controlled door closers as a common arrangement and requires the manufacturer’s installation instructions to be followed. In any jurisdiction, verify that the door closes and latches under fire conditions, releases as required for emergency egress, and does not rely on an access-control function that conflicts with life-safety rules.

  • Check whether the listing permits electric strikes, panic hardware, electromagnetic locks, readers or automatic operators.
  • Confirm fail-safe or fail-secure behavior, emergency release, power-loss operation and fire-alarm interface with the code official.
  • Keep required clear widths and maneuvering clearances after adding frames, closers and protective hardware.
  • Do not field-drill or cut a fire-rated leaf unless the listing and manufacturer expressly permit it.

Installation controls that protect the rating

The Glass and Glazing Federation describes fire-resistant glass as part of a system that includes seals, beads, fixings and frame. UK occupational guidance likewise emphasizes classification, associated components, traceability and documentation. These principles apply wherever the door is installed: the glass label alone cannot validate the completed opening.

Before installation

  • Compare the delivered labels and packing list with the approved submittal.
  • Inspect the frame, glazing pockets, seals, beads and hardware for the exact approved types.
  • Verify opening dimensions, substrate, anchors and clearances against the installation instructions.

During installation

  • Use the specified setting blocks, gaskets, sealants, beads, fasteners and anchor spacing.
  • Maintain edge clearances and avoid unapproved contact between glass and metal.
  • Install closers, latches and access-control devices without altering the tested construction.
  • Record serial numbers, labels, installer details and any permitted site adjustments.

At handover

  • Operate the door through its full swing and verify self-closing, latching and release functions.
  • Check that seals are continuous, glazing is undamaged and labels remain legible.
  • Deliver the listing, test reports, instructions, maintenance schedule and inspection records to the owner.

How to compare proposals without creating a false “best” choice

Comparison axis Questions to put to every supplier
Fire Is the rating fire protection or fire resistance? What duration and temperature-rise or hose-stream criteria apply?
Security Which ASTM or ISO method was used? What threat, tools, attack duration and classification were tested?
Assembly Are the door, glazing, frame, seals, fixings and hardware all covered? What maximum dimensions and leaf arrangements are allowed?
Operation How are access control, egress, closing, panic release and daily traffic handled?
Project fit Will the local authority accept the certification? Who supplies, installs, inspects and supports the system?

The available evidence does not establish a universal best system, nor does it provide reliable comparisons of price, lead time, acoustic performance or long-term durability. Obtain current project quotations and technical submittals for those decisions. A manufacturer’s “up to 60 minutes” statement is a product claim; it is not a market statistic or permission to exceed the tested configuration.

Common specification mistakes and their fixes

“Use fire-rated glass with a security laminate”

Why it fails: the combination may never have been tested in the proposed frame and door. Fix: require one certification covering the complete fire-and-security assembly.

“The security test proves the door cannot be breached”

Why it fails: ASTM methods are comparative and limited to defined attacks. Fix: match the tested threat and duration to the site risk and describe the result as resistance, not impossibility.

“Any fire-rated closer or lock will work”

Why it fails: hardware compatibility and egress behavior can invalidate the listing or create a life-safety problem. Fix: use only hardware identified in the assembly documentation or approved in writing.

“A listing from another country is automatically acceptable”

Why it fails: fire classifications, code editions and approval procedures differ. Fix: have the design professional and authority having jurisdiction confirm local acceptance before ordering.

What to request in the procurement package

  • Complete fire and forced-entry certification or test reports, with edition dates and scope.
  • Annotated shop drawings showing glass make-up, frame, seals, beads, fixings, hardware and dimensions.
  • Maximum permitted sizes, leaf combinations, sidelite or transom options and approved field modifications.
  • Installation, glazing, adjustment, inspection and maintenance instructions.
  • Evidence of traceability, labels and the installer’s qualifications.
  • A written statement identifying any component not covered by the tested assembly and the procedure for approval.

With those documents, the project team can decide whether a glazed opening satisfies both hazards without assuming that a product description is a certification. The practical rule is simple: specify the tested assembly, verify local acceptance and install it exactly as documented.
