Burl figure is a distinctive wood-grain pattern: swirls of grain threaded with eye-like marks. In woodworking, the way the burl is cut affects whether those marks show as eyes or pins, and burl may be used as veneer or as solid material.
What burl figure looks like
WOOD Magazine Staff describes burl figure as “one of the rarest and most beautiful figure patterns.” Its March 28, 2017 article calls burls “balloon shaped growths composed of swirls of grain laced with eyes.” The visual effect comes from that irregular, swirling grain and its small eye-like features.
The article offers a brief description rather than a botanical explanation. It notes that some people consider burls cancers and presents the author’s view that they are more like benign tumors; it does not provide evidence to establish either characterization. WOOD Magazine’s burl figure overview is the source for these descriptions.
How the cut changes the visible pattern
For the eye-like burl figure, the WOOD Magazine article says the pattern appears on flat-sawn faces. It recommends rotary-sliced veneer to show the eyes; quartering lumber, it says, makes the figure appear as a pin instead of an eye. The cutting orientation therefore matters when the goal is to display the characteristic eye pattern.

Burl veneer and solid burl material
Burl is often sliced into veneer, a thin layer used as a decorative surface. WOOD Magazine also notes that burl can be produced as solid material. These are different ways of presenting the same distinctive figure: veneer gives a surface covering, while solid burl is used as a solid piece or component. The article does not compare their cost, durability, or performance.
