Figure Helix Explained: The AI Behind Humanoid Robots for the Home

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Figure Helix is not a household robot you can buy. It is Figure AI’s robot-control software: a vision-language-action system that turns sensor data and natural-language instructions into physical movement. The home-oriented hardware is Figure 03, a humanoid designed to run Helix. As of August 16, 2026, Figure had demonstrated increasingly complex household tasks, but had not published a normal consumer price, checkout process, or home-delivery schedule.

What is Figure Helix?

Helix is Figure AI’s proprietary vision-language-action model, or VLA. It connects what a robot sees and senses with language understanding, task reasoning, and movement. Instead of requiring a separately hand-programmed routine for every object and situation, the system is intended to interpret an instruction, identify relevant objects, plan a sequence, and control the robot’s body while it works.

That makes Helix fundamentally different from a chatbot or smart-home assistant. It is a learned physical-control system running on a humanoid robot. The model must account for camera views, touch, balance, joint position, grasp force, walking, and changing surroundings.

Figure’s original Helix announcement in February 2025 described continuous control of the upper body, including the torso, wrists, head, and individual fingers. Figure also demonstrated natural-language-conditioned manipulation, unfamiliar household objects, multiple behaviors handled by one neural network, and coordination between two robots using the same learned system. See Figure’s original Helix announcement and current Helix overview.

Helix versus Helix 02

The current version described by Figure is Helix 02, announced January 27, 2026. The major change is that Helix moved from primarily upper-body manipulation to unified, whole-body control.

System What it controls Why it matters
Original Helix Upper body, hands, fingers, torso, wrists and head Manipulates objects from language instructions
Helix 02 Walking, balance, torso, arms, hands and fingers Combines locomotion and manipulation in one task

In practical terms, the robot can reposition its feet and torso while carrying or manipulating an object. Figure says Helix 02 performed a four-minute autonomous dishwasher task involving 61 ordered “loco-manipulation” actions. The sequence included walking to the dishwasher, opening it, unloading dishes, carrying them across the room, placing them in cabinets, returning for more items, loading the dishwasher, and starting it.

Figure describes that demonstration as running from onboard sensors without resets or human intervention. Its claim that the run was the longest and most complex autonomous humanoid task of its kind is a company claim, not an independently established industry ranking. The technical description is available in Figure’s Helix 02 announcement.

How the Helix 02 architecture works

Figure describes Helix 02 as a layered control system rather than a single conventional application:

System 2: semantic reasoning

The highest layer processes language and scene information, then produces high-level goals or semantic representations. A command such as “walk to the dishwasher, unload the bowls, and put them away” does not need to describe every step, foot placement, or joint angle.

System 1: whole-body action generation

This layer turns the higher-level intent into coordinated joint targets. It handles the relationship between the robot’s legs, torso, arms, hands, and fingers, including long sequences and what Figure calls implicit error recovery.

System 0: learned low-level control

The lowest layer executes stable movement at high frequency. Figure says System 0 was trained with more than 1,000 hours of human-motion data and sim-to-real reinforcement learning. Figure also says the learned controller replaced 109,504 lines of hand-engineered C++ with a neural prior.

These are Figure’s published architectural descriptions, not a fully independently audited technical specification. They nevertheless explain the central idea: language sets the goal, intermediate layers generate a physical plan, and a learned controller executes the motion.

Why Figure 03 is designed for homes

Figure 03 is the hardware platform intended for both household and commercial work. Figure introduced it on October 9, 2025, describing a redesign around Helix and the physical realities of home environments.

Sensors for cluttered spaces

Figure 03 uses higher-frequency cameras with lower latency and a wider field of view. It also adds cameras in the palms, allowing the robot to inspect an object at close range when its head cameras cannot see clearly. Tactile sensors in the fingertips provide contact information, and Figure says they can detect forces as small as three grams.

Those capabilities matter because household objects are often partly hidden, irregularly placed, deformable, fragile, or mixed together. Vision alone may not reveal whether a glass is slipping, whether a drawer has opened fully, or how much force is appropriate. Proprioception—the robot’s information about its own position and movement—adds another source of feedback. Figure also describes wireless data offload for fleet learning.

Physical specifications

Specification Figure’s stated figure
Height 5 feet 8 inches
Weight 61 kg
Payload 20 kg
Maximum speed 1.2 m/s
Runtime Up to five hours
Wireless charging Up to 2 kW

These are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified test results. “Up to five hours” depends on workload and test conditions, and a 20 kg payload should not be interpreted as proof that every household task can safely use that load while the robot walks, reaches, or climbs.

Home-oriented design features

  • Soft textiles and removable, washable soft goods.
  • Multi-density foam around potential impact and pinch areas.
  • Battery protection at the battery-management, cell, interconnect, and pack levels.
  • UN38.3 battery certification for lithium-battery transport safety.
  • Improved microphones and speakers.
  • Palm cameras and fingertip tactile sensing.

UN38.3 should not be confused with certification that the complete humanoid is safe around children or pets. Household safety requires evidence about collision forces, stopping behavior, pinch protection, emergency stops, falls, software failures, and operation around unpredictable people and animals. Figure’s hardware details are available on its Figure 03 announcement and product page.

What household work has Figure demonstrated?

The demonstrations show what Helix 02 has performed under selected conditions. They should not be read as a guarantee that Figure 03 can reliably perform every listed chore in an ordinary home.

Dishwasher unloading and loading

Figure’s four-minute demonstration combines navigation, opening a dishwasher, grasping dishes, carrying them, stacking them in cabinets, returning for more items, loading the machine, and starting it. The company says the sequence contained 61 ordered actions and ran autonomously from onboard sensors.

Living-room tidying

In a March 9, 2026 demonstration, Figure showed Helix 02 cleaning a living room while navigating narrow paths and handling scattered objects, containers, tools, pillows, towels, and other household items. Figure specifically presents the living room as more difficult than a structured commercial environment because layouts and object positions change constantly. The demonstration is described at Figure’s living-room update.

Bedroom reset and bed-making

On May 8, 2026, Figure showed two Helix 02-equipped humanoids resetting a bedroom in under two minutes. The video included opening doors, hanging clothes, putting away headphones, closing a book, taking out trash, moving a chair, and making a bed.

Figure says both robots used one learned VLA policy without a shared planner, message passing, or a central coordinator. That is notable for multi-robot coordination, but it remains a company-published demonstration. The details are in Figure’s bedroom demonstration.

Figure’s Helix and Figure 03 pages also identify laundry, cleaning, and dishwashing as target household tasks. A target task is not necessarily a reliable, commercially available capability across different homes.

Why home chores are harder than factory work

Factories usually constrain the robot’s world: objects arrive in known locations, routes are predictable, lighting is controlled, and people follow operating procedures. Homes do the opposite.

  • Furniture creates narrow and changing routes.
  • Clothing, towels, bedding, pillows, and bags deform unpredictably.
  • People, children, pets, and other robots can move into the robot’s path.
  • Objects may be fragile, sharp, hot, wet, valuable, or contaminated.
  • Stairs, uneven flooring, reflective surfaces, poor lighting, and tight corners complicate navigation.
  • Walking, balance, grasping, force control, and language interpretation must work together over a long sequence.

A robot may successfully identify a plate yet fail to retrieve it because another object blocks the route. A correct grasp may still break glassware. A small error early in a task can compound over several minutes. “Generalist” means one learned policy is intended to cover many tasks and objects; it does not mean human-level reliability or safe handling of every household hazard.

Is Helix 02 really autonomous?

Figure says its Helix 02 household demonstrations were fully autonomous and not teleoperated. That is meaningful evidence that the system can complete selected tasks without a human continuously controlling its limbs.

It is not the same as proving unsupervised, all-day reliability. The public demonstrations do not establish performance across every home layout or object category, nor do the reviewed materials provide a broad fleet dataset showing failure rates, intervention rates, recovery outcomes, or independent third-party testing.

Important failure modes include ambiguous instructions such as “put that away,” occluded objects inside cabinets or laundry baskets, deformable fabrics, fragile items, blocked routes, self-occlusion by the robot’s own hands, balance changes while carrying loads, and long-horizon error accumulation. Figure’s “implicit error recovery” should therefore be treated as a described capability, not a guarantee that every failure will be recovered safely.

Can you buy a Figure 03?

Not through a normal public consumer purchase path, based on Figure’s official material reviewed through August 16, 2026. Figure had produced more than 350 Figure 03 robots by April 29, 2026, and said its production rate had increased from one robot per day to one per hour. Those robots were allocated to internal research and development, data collection, housework development, and commercial-use development.

Figure 03 later entered BMW’s Spartanburg plant for a logistics workflow. Figure has also announced commercial logistics work with Catalyst Brands. These deployments may, by inference, provide production experience, operational data, and failure feedback before large-scale household deployment. They do not make the robot a retail appliance.

The official pages reviewed do not publish a consumer price, reservation form, ordinary checkout workflow, public home-customer lease plan, or household delivery schedule. Do not rely on social-media estimates or third-party listings as Figure 03 pricing. Businesses interested in partnerships or pilots should use Figure’s official company contact route, but an enterprise inquiry is not a consumer order.

What prospective home users should evaluate

Reliability

Ask for completion rates without intervention, results in unfamiliar homes, recovery procedures after failed grasps, and evidence from more than selected demonstrations.

Safety

Look for collision-force limits, stopping behavior, pinch-point protection, emergency-stop access, and specific procedures around stairs, knives, hot surfaces, medications, liquids, children, and pets.

Privacy

Any home deployment would need clear answers about camera and microphone retention, whether video leaves the home, who can access telemetry, how software updates are authorized, and whether household footage is used for model training.

Physical fit

Door widths, stairs, floor transitions, counter heights, cabinets, charging space, and room to turn may determine whether the robot can operate effectively. Published height, payload, speed, and runtime do not answer those installation questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance and economics

A buyer would also need replacement soft goods, battery servicing, actuator and hand maintenance, fall recovery, remote diagnostics, software-update procedures, insurance guidance, liability terms, and the total cost of ownership. No public Figure consumer pricing or support package establishes that economics yet.

The industrial route to the home

Figure is pursuing both household and workforce applications. Its production ramp and commercial deployments suggest a route in which industrial environments help develop hardware, manufacturing, operational support, and fleet learning before the technology reaches many homes. This is an inference from Figure’s announced activities, not a stated guarantee of a consumer launch sequence.

The distinction matters. Production scaling can demonstrate that a company can build more robots; it does not prove that those robots are ready for unsupervised home use, affordable ownership, or consumer support. Commercial sites also offer more controlled workflows than homes, even when they remain operationally demanding.

Who should pay attention now?

  • Researchers and developers: Helix 02 is relevant to whole-body control, VLA generalization, tactile manipulation, sim-to-real learning, and multi-robot behavior.
  • Businesses: Commercial pilots may be more realistic than household ownership, particularly for logistics and repetitive workflows with measurable requirements.
  • Consumers: Wait for official pricing, safety documentation, privacy terms, support commitments, installation requirements, and independent household reliability testing.

The answer in plain English

Helix is the AI control layer; Figure 03 is the humanoid body designed to use it. Helix 02 has progressed from upper-body object manipulation to whole-body tasks that combine walking, balance, language, perception, and grasping. Figure has shown dishwasher work, living-room tidying, bedroom resets, and bed-making in company demonstrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those demonstrations make Figure one of the more significant home-robot development programs to watch, but they do not establish a retail product or a general-purpose domestic employee. For now, Figure 03 is best understood as a developing research and commercial platform moving toward the home—not a robot an ordinary consumer can order.
