Echo Show Takes Alexa to the Next Level: Here’s How

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Echo Show is worth the upgrade when you want Alexa to show, confirm, or let you tap something—not merely speak an answer. Its touchscreen adds recipes, calendars, camera feeds, visual smart-home controls, video calls, photos, timers, and shared household information to the voice and audio features of a regular Echo.

In 2026, there is also a second layer to consider: Amazon’s Alexa+ is designed for more natural conversations, follow-up requests, planning, personalization, and continuity across compatible Echo devices, the Alexa app, Fire TV, and the web. Amazon currently says Alexa+ is included with Prime, although availability and requirements can vary by market. See Amazon’s current Alexa+ details.

What Echo Show adds to a regular Echo

A standard Echo is primarily a voice-and-audio device. You ask a question, start music, set a timer, or control a compatible smart-home product, and Alexa responds through the speaker.

Echo Show adds a touchscreen, visual cards, video, cameras on selected models, photo display, and touch-based controls. That changes the experience in practical ways:

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Show 5 (newest model), Smart display, Designed for Alexa+, 2x the bass and clearer sound, Charcoal
  • Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
  • See information: weather forecasts, calendars, reminders, shopping lists, timers, supported news, recipes, and photos.
  • See and tap controls: view room devices, check whether a light or plug is on, and trigger supported scenes without remembering an exact voice command.
  • Watch content: use supported video and entertainment services.
  • View cameras: display compatible doorbell and security-camera feeds.
  • Communicate visually: make video calls, use Drop In with approved contacts, and send announcements between Echo devices.

Try commands such as:

  • “Alexa, show me the front door.”
  • “Alexa, show me recipes for chicken.”
  • “Alexa, show my calendar.”
  • “Alexa, turn off the downstairs lights.”
  • “Alexa, start a 10-minute timer.”
  • “Alexa, call [contact].”

Not every Alexa response becomes visual. The result depends on the command, device, region, account, software version, skill, and the capabilities exposed by a connected product. A camera integration may support live viewing without supporting recording, pan-and-tilt control, or every feature available in the camera’s native app.

Amazon describes Alexa-enabled smart-home products as controllable through voice, the Alexa app, and Alexa-enabled devices with screens. Amazon’s smart-home documentation explains the current model.

The Alexa+ difference

The display is Echo Show hardware. Alexa+ is an assistant capability that can run across compatible Amazon experiences. Keeping those separate makes it easier to understand what an Echo Show can and cannot do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon’s current Alexa+ presentation emphasizes:

  • More natural, conversational requests.
  • Follow-up questions and changes of direction during a task.
  • Personalized answers and remembered preferences.
  • Planning events, meals, checklists, and other multi-step tasks.
  • Continuity between the browser, Alexa app, Echo devices, and Fire TV.
  • Turning information into actions, such as organizing a plan or schedule.

An Echo Show makes structured answers easier to use because lists, recipes, calendars, plans, and images can remain visible. However, Alexa+ does not turn incompatible hardware into compatible hardware. A camera, appliance, service, or skill still needs an Alexa integration and the required permissions. Amazon says Alexa+ is included with Prime on its current site; confirm availability, account requirements, and geographic eligibility for your location.

Five Echo Show uses that justify the upgrade

1. A practical smart-home dashboard

Voice control is convenient when you know exactly what to say. A screen is better when you want to inspect several devices, confirm a state, or choose from multiple options.

With compatible products, an Echo Show can help you:

  • Check whether lights, plugs, locks, or thermostats are active.
  • Control devices grouped by room.
  • View a camera or doorbell feed while working in another room.
  • Trigger a multi-device scene.
  • Use touch controls when Alexa mishears a command or several people are using the room.

For a household that already uses Alexa-compatible lights, plugs, cameras, or thermostats, this may be the most meaningful improvement over a speaker.

  • MEET ECHO SHOW 15 - A stunning 15.6" Full-HD (1080p) smart display that's perfect for your kitchen and ready to show you more. • FAMILY ORGANIZATION HUB - See your top widgets at a glance, like your family’s calendars and to-do lists, local weather, smart home, and more.
  • ALL YOUR FAVORITES, ALL RIGHT HERE - Built-in Fire TV unlocks endless entertainment, so you can enjoy your favorite content from thousands of apps like Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, and more (subscription may be required). • SMART HOME CENTRAL - Control smart devices with your voice or a few taps using the smart home dashboard. Easily turn on all your living room lights at once or check live camera feeds to see what's happening around your home.
  • YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES ON DISPLAY - Brighten your space (and your day) by turning your home screen into a photo slideshow that displays your favorite memories. Auto curate your images and show off your favorite family memories.

2. A hands-free kitchen assistant

Echo Show is especially useful in a kitchen, where hands may be wet or occupied. You can ask for a recipe, keep instructions visible, set several timers, convert measurements, add ingredients to a shopping list, and play audio without touching a phone.

The screen matters because a recipe or measurement is easier to scan than a long spoken answer. It also provides a visible timer and a quick way to check the next step.

3. A camera and doorbell viewer

On a compatible setup, “Alexa, show me the front door” can be faster than opening a phone app. This is useful for checking a delivery, seeing who is outside, or monitoring a room while doing another task.

Support varies by camera brand, model, account link, region, and permissions. Live viewing does not automatically mean two-way talk, recording, pan-and-tilt control, or routine-triggered display actions are supported. A subscription may be required for some recording or advanced camera features, but it should not be assumed that every basic live-view function requires one.

4. Household communication

Camera-equipped Echo Show models can support video calling, while Drop In and announcements can connect approved contacts or Echo devices around the home. Families may use an Echo Show to announce dinner, call another room, or communicate with relatives.

Calling features depend on the model, account, contact permissions, and supported services. Review who can call or Drop In before placing a device in a bedroom, shared workspace, or another private area.

5. Calendars, reminders, lists, and photos

A regular Echo can speak a reminder or add an item to a list. Echo Show can keep that information visible. This makes it useful as a shared household display for appointments, school or work reminders, shopping lists, weather, and family photos.

Set up Echo Show correctly

Menu names can vary by model, firmware, region, and account. Treat the following as a model-neutral sequence rather than a promise that every device displays identical labels.

  1. Power on the device. Select the language and region shown on the screen.
  2. Sign in with the Amazon account that will own the device and its smart-home links.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi. Confirm that the device is placed where the signal is dependable.
  4. Confirm location and time zone. This affects weather, alarms, routines, and calendar behavior.
  5. Install or update the Alexa app. Check that the Echo Show appears under Devices.
  6. Apply software updates when offered, then restart if the device requests it.
  7. Test basic functions. Ask for the weather, set a short timer, and try a smart-home command if you have compatible devices.
  8. Link services and contacts selectively. Add calendars, camera accounts, calling contacts, and music or video services only when you need them.

Some compatible Echo models can discover and set up certain smart-home products directly, including supported Zigbee devices. The exact discovery process is not universal across every generation. Check Amazon’s compatibility documentation for the specific model.

Customize the home screen

Use the device’s home-screen and clock settings to keep useful information visible and remove distractions. Depending on the model and software, relevant labels may include Home Content or Home & Clock.

Consider keeping:

  • Weather and forecasts.
  • Calendar appointments.
  • Reminders and shopping lists.
  • Photos or photo-frame mode.
  • Frequently used smart-home controls.

Remove cards that are irrelevant to the room. Recheck these settings after major software updates, because available cards and labels can change. Amazon’s developer documentation describes home-screen content and skill-generated cards, but support is device- and skill-dependent. See Amazon’s home-screen guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build routines that actually save time

A routine combines a trigger with one or more actions. The trigger might be a voice phrase, schedule, alarm, device event, or another supported condition. Actions can include lights, plugs, thermostats, music, announcements, timers, and other supported operations.

Good Morning

  • Read the weather.
  • Read the calendar.
  • Turn on selected lights.
  • Announce a reminder.
  • Start a news briefing or playlist.

Bedtime

  • Turn off selected lights.
  • Lock compatible doors.
  • Adjust the thermostat.
  • Set an alarm.
  • Announce the first calendar item for the next morning.

Cooking mode

  • Open or display a supported recipe.
  • Set multiple timers.
  • Add missing ingredients to a shopping list.
  • Start a selected playlist.

Away mode

  • Turn off selected plugs and lights.
  • Lock supported doors.
  • Arm compatible security devices.
  • Announce that the routine ran.

Movie mode

  • Dim compatible lights.
  • Adjust supported entertainment equipment.
  • Set a preferred volume.
  • Turn off distracting lights.

Do not assume that a routine can display any arbitrary content or operate every camera feature. Actions depend on integrations, permissions, device availability, and the capabilities exposed to Alexa. A routine may appear to run even if a downstream device is offline or one action fails.

  • YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES ON DISPLAY - Brighten your space (and your day) by turning your home screen into a photo slideshow that displays your favorite memories. Auto curate your images and show off your favorite family memories.

Amazon’s current developer documentation uses the term “smart home add-ons” for what were previously called smart-home skills, while stating that existing integrations continue to operate. Read Amazon’s current terminology and updates.

Choose the right Echo Show model

Choose by room, viewing distance, communication needs, and smart-home protocols rather than by screen size alone. Amazon’s current documentation and compatibility lists include the Echo Show 5, Echo Show 8, Echo Show 10 third generation, Echo Show 11 released in 2025, Echo Show 15 second generation, and Echo Show 21, along with earlier generations of some models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Best fit Trade-off
Small Echo Show Bedroom, desk, nightstand, or compact kitchen Smaller text and video; less suitable for shared viewing
Echo Show 8 or 11 General household use, kitchen counters, and family communication More space and cost than the smallest model
Echo Show 10 Users who value a display that can follow them during calls or viewing Rotating mechanism affects placement; it is an older generation and should not automatically be treated as the newest model
Echo Show 15 or 21 Wall-mounted household dashboards, calendars, recipes, cameras, and shared information Needs wall space, power, and installation planning; may be excessive for close-up personal use

Choose a smaller model when one person will view it from nearby. Choose a larger model when several people need to read calendars, recipes, cameras, or controls across a room. Verify current Amazon pricing on the product page because promotional prices change and older sale prices should not be treated as current.

Also check camera hardware, microphone and privacy controls, mounting requirements, and the exact generation before buying. A large screen is not automatically the best smart-home controller.

Matter, Zigbee, and Thread: why the protocol matters

Echo Show models do not all provide the same smart-home connectivity. A device may support Matter without including a Zigbee hub or Thread border router.

  • Matter: a cross-platform smart-home standard intended to improve interoperability among compatible devices and ecosystems. Amazon lists Matter support across many Echo devices, including multiple Echo Show models.
  • Zigbee: a wireless smart-home protocol used by many lights, sensors, plugs, and other devices. Only selected Echo Show models include a Zigbee hub.
  • Thread: a low-power mesh networking technology used by some modern smart-home products. Selected Echo Show models include Thread border-router functionality.

Amazon’s documentation identifies selected Echo Show models—including the Echo Show 8 third-generation 2025 release, Echo Show 10 third generation, Echo Show 11 2025 release, Echo Show 15 second generation, and Echo Show 21—with selected Zigbee and Thread hub capabilities. The exact compatibility list should decide your purchase if you plan to use Zigbee or Thread devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon also says Matter-enabled Echo devices support Matter 1.5 as of March 2026. Support for a standard still does not guarantee that every feature of every product will be exposed through Alexa.

Privacy and the limits of the experience

An Echo Show combines a microphone, display, network connection, and—on camera-equipped models—a camera. Decide whether that combination is appropriate for the room before installing it.

  • Use the physical microphone mute control when you want to stop microphone input.
  • Use the physical camera shutter or camera-disable control where provided.
  • Remember that muting the microphone and disabling the camera are separate controls.
  • Review Drop In permissions and contact approval.
  • Check Alexa privacy settings and voice-recording controls.
  • Consider whether a display and microphone belong in a bedroom or shared workspace.

Avoid absolute assumptions such as “the camera is never active” or “recordings are never stored.” Behavior depends on the model, settings, account, and Amazon’s current privacy policies. Use the visible indicator and physical controls on your model, and review the account settings periodically.

Troubleshooting common problems

Alexa hears the command, but the screen shows nothing

The command may not have a visual response, the skill may provide audio only, the service may be unlinked, or the feature may not be available in your region or on that device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Try a known visual command, such as weather, a timer, or a compatible camera name.
  2. Check that the relevant skill or service is enabled and linked.
  3. Try the same request in the Alexa app to identify whether the problem is device-specific.
  4. Update or restart the Echo Show.
  5. Rephrase the request using the device or service name shown in Alexa.

A routine runs only partially

One device may be offline, assigned to the wrong room, renamed, disconnected from its account, or unable to perform the selected action.

  1. Open the routine and inspect its trigger.
  2. Test every action independently.
  3. Check the affected device in the Alexa app.
  4. Relink the third-party service if its account connection expired.
  5. Rebuild the routine with fewer actions, then add them back one at a time.

The camera feed is black or unavailable

  1. Test the camera in its native app.
  2. Confirm the camera account remains linked to Alexa.
  3. Check camera privacy controls.
  4. Restart both the camera and Echo Show.
  5. Test from the same network.
  6. Confirm that the integration supports live viewing on that Echo Show model.

Wi-Fi or video calls are unreliable

Move the Echo Show closer to the router or a mesh node, avoid placing it inside a cabinet or behind a television, and reboot the router before rebooting the Echo Show. Testing available 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks may help, but changing bands will not fix every problem; congestion, router settings, account issues, or a service outage may be responsible.

Is Echo Show better than a regular Echo?

Choose Echo Show if you want visual recipes, calendars, timers, photos, camera feeds, shared household information, touch controls, or a more useful display for Alexa+ planning and multi-step tasks.

Stay with a regular Echo if your main uses are music, alarms, weather, timers, and simple voice commands; if you do not need video or touch controls; or if you prefer not to place a camera-equipped display in the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Echo Show depends on viewing distance and the room. A small model suits a bedside table or desk. A mid-size model is the practical general-purpose choice for many kitchens and living spaces. A larger model is most useful as a shared or wall-mounted dashboard. If Zigbee or Thread matters, choose from the models that explicitly support the required protocol rather than assuming the entire Echo Show range does.
