Yes—Fellow’s Espresso Series 1 is plausibly the company’s most ambitious coffee appliance yet. It combines a heated grouphead, three-part heating system, app-controlled espresso profiles and assisted milk steaming in a design-led semi-automatic machine. But “crown jewel” is an editorial judgment, not an objective industry ranking—and the $1,499.95 U.S. machine still requires a separate grinder, careful puck preparation and some tolerance for first-generation software.
What the Espresso Series 1 is
The Espresso Series 1 is a semi-automatic home espresso machine, not a bean-to-cup appliance. You still grind fresh coffee, dose it into the portafilter, distribute and tamp the grounds, start the extraction and clean the machine afterward.

Fellow’s contribution is to make that traditional workflow more guided. The machine supports preset and custom espresso profiles through the Fellow app, assists with temperature management and automates the steam wand’s shutoff at the selected milk temperature. It can operate without the app, although Fellow recommends connecting it for firmware updates and performance improvements. See Fellow’s official product page and gear guide for the current details.
That puts Series 1 between a basic appliance designed to make espresso quickly and a traditional prosumer machine that expects the owner to control nearly everything manually.

Why it feels like a flagship Fellow product
Fellow built its reputation around design-conscious brewing accessories, including kettles, grinders and coffee servers. Series 1 extends that visual language into a far more complex category: a substantial espresso machine with its own heating architecture, software and milk-steaming system.
The available finishes include Black, Malted Chocolate with Maple, Cherry Red with Walnut, Woodland with Walnut, Sesame with Maple, Marine Blue with Walnut and a limited BIGFACE collaboration. Details such as integrated cord storage, hidden cleaning-tool storage, a rubber cup pad and wood-handled variants reinforce the sense that this is intended to be a centerpiece rather than anonymous countertop equipment.
It would be too broad to call it objectively the best-looking espresso machine. The stronger claim is that Fellow has brought a recognizable, cohesive design identity to a category often dominated by polished stainless steel and café-style controls. On design ambition and brand significance, “crown jewel” is a defensible description.

The technology behind Series 1
Boosted Boiler heating
Fellow says its Boosted BoilerTM system uses three independently functioning heating elements:
- A flow-through heater
- A boiler
- A heated grouphead
The intended result is better temperature management while brewing, steaming and dispensing hot water. Fellow specifies a warm-up time of two minutes or less. That is a useful convenience claim, but it is not evidence that Series 1 outperforms every dual-boiler or commercial machine. Those comparisons require controlled independent testing.
A heated grouphead
The grouphead includes a brass core, an internal heating element and a water-dispersion block. Its purpose is to keep conditions at the coffee puck more stable than they might be with a grouphead that simply receives water from a separate heater.

Fellow also lists a 15-bar pump calibrated for extraction of up to 9 bars. That distinction matters: a “15-bar pump” should not be treated as a claim that espresso is brewed at 15 bars or that higher pressure automatically means better coffee.

The app allows users to select preset profiles, create custom profiles and manage updates. Flow- and pressure-related settings are part of the machine’s appeal, because they give beginners guidance without completely removing the variables that experienced users care about.
The machine also has dedicated shortcut buttons for brewing, steaming and hot water. That helps reduce app friction during routine use. However, connected features introduce a dependency that a conventional machine avoids. WIRED’s early coverage reported multiple firmware fixes during pre-launch testing and described the product as impressive but still developing. That does not make Series 1 a failure; it does make first-generation software part of the buying decision.
What the assisted steam wand actually automates
The temperature-sensing steam wand automatically stops when the milk reaches the selected temperature and purges after use. Fellow says it can be customized for different milk types.
This is useful assistance, but it is not a fully automatic latte system. You still need to position the pitcher, introduce air, create the correct whirlpool and judge the texture. The wand automates temperature control and reduces guesswork; it does not eliminate the need to learn milk texturing.

Their foaming behavior differs, so “assisted” should not be read as a guarantee of café-quality microfoam for every drink and user.

How hands-on is the brewing workflow?
- Grind fresh beans. A separate espresso-capable grinder is essential for serious results.
- Dose into the portafilter. The included single-wall double-shot basket is designed for users who can control grind and preparation. The pressurized basket is more forgiving.
- Distribute and tamp. Fellow’s own gear guide lists a WDT tool, dosing funnel and guided tamper as useful parts of the workflow.
- Select a profile. Use a preset or create a custom profile through the app.
- Extract the shot. Adjust grind size, dose, yield and timing as needed. Smart assistance does not remove the need to dial in coffee.
- Steam milk if required. Position the pitcher manually while the wand manages the selected temperature.
- Clean and purge. The wand, grouphead, portafilter and drip tray still require routine care.
For beginners, the guided profiles, quick stated warm-up and assisted steaming are meaningful advantages. The machine is not, however, a push-button shortcut around espresso fundamentals.
What is included—and what is missing?
The official listing includes:
- A 58 mm bottomless portafilter
- A tamper
- A 10-ounce stainless-steel milk pitcher
- An 18 g single-wall double-shot basket
- An 18 g pressurized double-shot basket
- A steam-wand tip cleaner
- A shot splitter attachment
- A backflush disc
- A hardness test strip, descaler and backflush tablets
The major omission is the grinder. Series 1 is not a complete espresso station, and the grinder can determine whether the machine reaches its potential. A realistic budget includes the machine, an espresso grinder, a scale and—depending on your workflow—tools such as a WDT device, dosing funnel, better tamper and knock box.
Fellow lists its Opus 2 Conical Burr Grinder at a price signal of $199.95 on the related gear guide, while retrieved Fellow pages showed Series 1 bundles and setup kits at changing promotional prices. Treat those figures as time-sensitive examples, not fixed totals. Fellow’s canonical U.S. product page listed the machine at $1,499.95 when checked for this article; another Fellow storefront page showed $1,599.95.
Counter-space and installation realities
The published dimensions are 17.24 × 12.4 × 10.98 inches, and the machine weighs 21.7 pounds. It has a 2.0-liter water tank. With the portafilter installed, Fellow says to allow approximately 21.5 inches from the rear of the machine to the portafilter tip.
The more easily missed measurement is vertical clearance. The tank lid reaches about 14.5 inches when open, and Fellow recommends 24 inches of overhead clearance if you intend to remove the tank for filling. A machine can therefore fit beneath cabinets on paper yet be awkward to use in practice. Measure the counter before buying.
For the U.S. model, published electrical information specifies 120 V, 60 Hz and 1,500 W. The model is SO01AANA. Price, warranty, electrical requirements and availability may differ outside the United States; Fellow said international availability was planned for 2026.

Ownership means maintenance
Series 1 reduces some brewing guesswork, but it does not remove espresso-machine maintenance. Plan to:
- Test water hardness and use suitable water
- Descale as required
- Backflush the grouphead
- Clean and purge the steam wand after milk use
- Clean the grouphead and portafilter
- Empty and wash the drip tray
- Keep cleaning supplies and tablets available
- Connect the app periodically for firmware updates
Fellow lists a standard two-year warranty and promotes possible three- or five-year extended coverage purchased within 90 days. Confirm the current terms, exclusions and regional conditions at checkout. Software support is another ownership consideration: the machine works without the app, but connected products always carry more uncertainty than purely mechanical alternatives if updates or app support eventually change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What independent reviewers found
Independent coverage has generally been positive without establishing a universal consensus. Bon Appétit positioned Series 1 toward the lower end of prosumer pricing and described it as a useful middle ground for people who want to improve without already being espresso experts.
Tom’s Guide reviewed it as a major 2026 release and judged its performance favorably. T3 praised the construction and espresso capability while noting the roughly $1,499 U.S. price in its June 2026 coverage.
The reservations are equally relevant. WIRED reported early firmware fixes. Other coverage identified the separate grinder as a weakness at this price, and Tom’s Guide’s broader espresso-machine coverage has noted a tendency toward wet pucks after brewing—a minor cleanup annoyance rather than a decisive flaw.
The fairest summary is that Series 1 offers impressive hardware and unusually approachable control, while remaining a first-generation connected appliance whose software and workflow may continue to evolve.

Who should buy it?
Buy Series 1 if you are:
- A design-conscious drinker who wants the machine to suit a carefully considered kitchen.
- A beginner with a premium budget who wants guidance without surrendering meaningful control.
- A frequent milk-drink maker who values temperature-assisted steaming.
- An existing Fellow owner who wants a flagship appliance to anchor the rest of the coffee setup.
- An enthusiast who already owns a capable espresso grinder and wants profiles, updates and a 58 mm workflow.
Consider another machine if you:
- Need to keep the complete setup below roughly $1,000.
- Want a grinder included.
- Prefer a mechanically familiar machine with fewer connected features.
- Prioritize long-term service familiarity and repairability over app features.
- Mainly drink straight espresso and do not need assisted steaming.
- Have low cabinets that make tank removal difficult.
How it compares with a cheaper Breville setup
The clearest value alternative is the Breville Bambino Plus and Baratza Encore ESP bundle, which had an official U.S. price signal of $649.95 when retrieved. It includes both the machine and grinder, offers a hands-free automatic steam wand and has a stated three-second ThermoJet warm-up.
That setup addresses Series 1’s biggest objection: the Fellow machine is expensive before you have bought the grinder. In exchange, you get a simpler control system, a smaller 54 mm portafilter and less app-based profiling and heating-system sophistication.
The Bambino Plus alone had a $499.95 U.S. price signal and makes sense for buyers who already own a grinder. It is a value alternative, not a direct technology equivalent. Traditional heat-exchanger and dual-boiler prosumer machines remain better category fits for buyers who prioritize extensive manual control, simultaneous brewing and steaming, mechanical familiarity and established service networks.

The verdict: crown jewel, but not universal best buy
Fellow’s Espresso Series 1 earns “crown jewel” status as a statement about the company’s ambition. It is likely Fellow’s most technologically involved and brand-defining coffee machine, and it successfully carries the company’s design language into a difficult appliance category.
It does not automatically become the best espresso machine for beginners, the best value or the best choice for experienced baristas. Its price, separate-grinder requirement, cabinet-clearance demands and early software history matter. Buy it when you specifically want Fellow’s combination of design, guidance, assisted milk preparation and evolving app-based control. Choose a cheaper Breville/Baratza route when your priority is a complete, lower-risk path to good espresso.
