It combines farm records, crop and zone management, IoT sensors, remote equipment control, tasks, and automation in a self-hosted web application built with Node.js, Vue.js, and MongoDB.
That description needs an important qualification in 2026: Farmery’s public documentation is historical, its original prerequisites are old, and its current repository, releases, security posture, and maintenance status could not be verified. Farmery is best treated as an experimental or research platform unless you can independently confirm a working source repository and deployment.

What is Farmery?
Farmery was reportedly started in November 2020 as an open-source cultivation-management system for farm owners, growers, scientists, and researchers. The project aims to bring several functions into one interface:
- Organization, farm, member, crop, plant, and zone records.
- Sensor monitoring and real-time environmental data.
- Remote control of pumps, lamps, fans, valves, humidifiers, and similar equipment.
- Task assignment and cultivation workflows.
- Automation processes and threshold-based device behavior.
- Remote access through a web application.
The original project description is available on Hackster.io, while a later description appears on the FFTC Smart Net-Zero resource.

Farmery should not automatically be classified as a complete farm ERP, validated precision-agriculture system, regulatory traceability platform, or production-ready control system. The available evidence supports calling it an early-stage smart-farm and cultivation-management project.
Is Farmery genuinely open source?
The creator describes Farmery as open source, and later coverage uses the same description. However, the available project material does not clearly identify the current source-code repository, software license, release history, or whether every component—including mobile applications, firmware, and hardware integrations—is publicly available.
Therefore, the careful conclusion is: Farmery is described as open source, but its exact license and present source-code availability require independent verification. “Open source” does not by itself prove active maintenance, security review, permissive licensing, production readiness, or zero operating cost. Hardware, hosting, electrical installation, calibration, backups, and maintenance still cost money.

Documented features
The Farmery interface is documented as including a summary dashboard, device-control center, task reminders, crop management, organization management, device management, real-time data, live camera views, remote control, task assignment, profile management, crop and crop-detail views, process management, and general settings.
The project’s roadmap separates capabilities into planned versions:
| Area | Documented status |
|---|---|
| Registration and login | Listed for Version 1.0 |
| Organizations and members | Documented core functionality |
| Farms, zones, plants, and crops | Documented or listed for Version 1.0, but some pages were marked “Update soon” |
| Device management and control | Documented, with implementation detail limited |
| Automatic scripts | Listed for Version 1.0; current implementation is unverified |
| Processes, tasks, and assignment | Planned for Version 2.0 |
| Warehouse management, reports, compliance, and QR/barcode traceability | Planned for Version 2.0 |
| Sales, finance, and delivery | Planned for Version 3.0 |
A roadmap is not proof that a feature was later delivered. The source page itself labels several areas as awaiting updates, so readers should verify each function in the exact version they obtain.

How the architecture works
Farmery’s documented design can be understood as four layers.
1. Sensors and actuators
Sensors collect measurements such as temperature, humidity, light, carbon dioxide, soil moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, and water temperature. Actuators operate equipment including pumps, mixing pumps, water-supply and drain valves, lighting, fans, and humidifiers.
2. Gateways
An ESP32, Raspberry Pi, or similar gateway connects local devices to the Farmery server. Depending on the hardware, the project describes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth Mesh, Zigbee, and LoRa or LoRaWAN combinations.
3. Messaging and integration
The published prerequisites include Eclipse Mosquitto, indicating an MQTT-based messaging path. HTTP is also referenced for device communication and integration.
4. Application services
The central application uses Node.js, Vue.js, and MongoDB. It is intended to display readings, store farm and crop information, manage users and devices, and provide remote-control and workflow functions.

Documented measurements
The Sense Hydro controller documentation describes EC from 0–10 mS/cm, TDS from 0–20,000 ppm, pH from 0–14, water temperature from 0–50°C, a water-level float sensor, and control of pumps and valves. It states EC accuracy of ±2% and pH accuracy of ±0.1 pH.
Other documented devices include:
- Sense Air Basic: 0–65,000 lux, temperatures from −10°C to 50°C, and relative humidity from 0–99%.
- Sense CO₂: carbon dioxide measurement from 0–5,000 ppm.
- Xiaomi Flower Care: light, air temperature, soil moisture, and a stated soil-nutrient range.
- Xiaomi Air Sensor: air temperature and humidity over Bluetooth Low Energy.
These specifications come from the project documentation and are not independent laboratory validation. Consumer “soil nutrient” readings should not be treated as a replacement for laboratory analysis or a calibrated nutrient-management program.

Do not assume this is a guaranteed 2026 installation procedure. The page does not provide enough verified information about the repository, branches, environment variables, database initialization, MQTT topics, TLS, reverse-proxy configuration, backups, authentication hardening, or current Node.js and MongoDB compatibility.
If you attempt deployment, use an isolated virtual machine or container first. Preserve the documented dependency versions where possible, keep the test system off the public internet, and do not connect production pumps, dosing equipment, or high-voltage devices until the control behavior has been independently tested.

Is Farmery still usable in 2026?
A real Farmery project page exists, it was published on April 16, 2021, and its technology stack, hardware examples, feature categories, and historical installation notes are documented. What is not verified is equally important:
- Whether the project is actively maintained.
- Whether a current source repository or release exists.
- Whether the original demo still operates.
- Whether mobile applications remain available and compatible.
- Whether the roadmap features were delivered.
- Whether current security vulnerabilities have been fixed.
- Whether the historical setup works with modern operating systems and packages.
- Whether there are active production deployments or supported customers.
It would be premature to call Farmery abandoned without stronger current evidence. The accurate description is that it appears to be an early-stage project whose public documentation dates mainly from 2021, with current maintenance and deployability unverified.

Network and gateway failures
A failed Wi-Fi, BLE, mesh, Zigbee, LoRa, gateway, or MQTT connection can stop readings, delay commands, or leave the dashboard displaying stale information. A serious deployment needs explicit handling for missing data, watchdogs, local fallback control, alerts, and safe timeout behavior.
Actuator risks
Remote control can cause flooding, crop loss, electrical hazards, or chemical overdosing if a sensor reports an implausible value, a threshold is wrong, a command is retried, a relay remains energized, or a service restarts during an operation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use independent overflow protection, emergency stops, electrical isolation, maximum run times, local manual controls, and fail-safe behavior. Farmery should not be treated as a substitute for those safeguards.
Best Value

- SAVE WATER YEAR-ROUND – Adaptive schedules help your yard thrive in April showers & July heat.
- FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING – Create your own schedule or let Weather Intelligence adjust automatically; includes grow-in options.
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE – Manage watering, run zones, view schedules & track estimated usage in the Rachio App.
Sensor limitations
Sensors drift and require calibration. Proxy measurements—especially consumer soil-moisture or nutrient readings—can be affected by substrate, temperature, salinity, probe placement, and battery condition. Build calibration and replacement procedures into the farm’s operating plan.
Security gaps to investigate
The published material does not establish HTTPS, secure secret management, password-hashing details, multifactor authentication, audit logging, network segmentation, vulnerability disclosure, or encrypted backups. Before exposing a deployment remotely:
- Place it behind a properly configured reverse proxy or VPN.
- Change all default or publicly documented credentials.
- Do not expose MQTT directly to the public internet.
- Use strong authentication and restrict administrative accounts.
- Segment control equipment from general-purpose networks.
- Back up the database and configuration files, then test restoration.
- Keep a manual operating procedure for loss of the application.
Farmery compared with alternatives
| Platform | Best suited to | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| farmOS | Farm records, planning, and field management | A mature open-source farm-management focus; not necessarily a direct hardware-control replacement |
| Ekylibre | Farm-management and business operations | Closer to an FMIS or ERP than a low-level greenhouse controller |
| FIWARE Smart Agrifood | Custom, standards-oriented IoT architectures | An extensible ecosystem requiring significant integration work |
| FarmInsight | Modern sensor visualization and facility automation experiments | Documents HTTP and MQTT integration, cameras, automation, and role-based management, but still requires maturity evaluation |
| OSFarm | Combining open-source agricultural components | An ecosystem approach rather than one monolithic application |
| FarmERP | Organizations seeking commercial agribusiness workflows | Vendor-supported commercial software rather than a self-hosted open-source project |
For a greenhouse or research installation, Farmery’s combination of records and device control may be attractive. For compliance, accounting, logistics, established support, or dependable enterprise operations, a more actively maintained farm-management product may be the safer starting point.
Before you install: a practical checklist
- Confirm that the source repository is accessible and identify its exact license.
- Check the latest commit, release, issue activity, and supported dependency versions.
- Build a disposable test environment before touching farm equipment.
- Verify database initialization and backup/restore procedures.
- Map every sensor, gateway, MQTT topic, actuator, and failure state.
- Test what the interface displays when readings stop arriving.
- Use independent limits for pumps, valves, dosing, lighting, and fans.
- Calibrate sensors and document replacement intervals.
- Secure accounts, MQTT, remote access, and administrative endpoints.
- Decide how the farm will operate during server, network, or power failure.
- Do not treat roadmap features as delivered until demonstrated in the version you deploy.
Who should use Farmery?
Farmery may suit developers, makers, researchers, and technically capable greenhouse, hydroponic, vertical-farm, or small-farm teams that want to experiment with self-hosted IoT and are prepared to adapt hardware and maintain the software stack.
It is a poor fit for an operation that needs guaranteed support, validated compliance, regulatory audit trails, mature accounting or logistics, plug-and-play sensor compatibility, or safety-critical unattended control without substantial additional engineering.
