Construction does not necessarily mean a business is closed, but it can change the route, sidewalk, parking, transit stop, delivery access, or entrance you normally use. Before leaving, confirm the business’s current status and the officially designated way in. The business or project authority must provide the location-specific details; general construction notices cannot safely substitute for them.
Why nearby construction changes a normal visit
Work beside a business can narrow or close sidewalks, move a crosswalk, remove on-street parking, change a transit stop, restrict turning movements, or make the familiar entrance temporarily unavailable. A vehicle route may remain open while the pedestrian route is not, and a building can be open even when its usual door is blocked.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) summarizes the customer-access problem this way: “The two main issues during construction are maintaining access to businesses for customers and deliveries and having sufficient signage and visibility so that customers know a business is open and understand how to enter and exit the site.” That guidance appears in Safe Access for Everyone Is Good for Business, Chapter 10 (2024).
Use the questions below to plan a visit, but replace every general instruction with the current information for the specific business and project. Do not follow a path that enters a fenced work area, crosses an unprotected excavation, or uses private property without explicit permission.

Is the business still open?
Check the business, not just the construction notice
A road-closure announcement does not establish whether a particular shop, clinic, office, restaurant, or service is operating. Check the business’s own website, telephone greeting, booking system, or other current customer channel, then confirm the access instructions. If the business says it is open, look for the current entrance and route rather than assuming the normal door is available.
What “open” should mean for your visit
A useful update states the operating hours for the day you plan to arrive, the entrance to use, and any change to parking, pickup, or deliveries that affects customers. If hours have changed, note the effective dates and time zone. A business may be open while construction limits evening access, removes a loading-zone pickup, or requires extra walking time.

Neither source says that a sign alone proves the route is safe or that the business is open at every hour.
How do I get to the business during construction?
Build the route from a confirmed approach point
- Choose the approach you will actually use: a named intersection, transit stop, parking facility, or drop-off point.
- Check the project authority’s latest map or notice for road, sidewalk, crosswalk, lane, and transit changes affecting that approach.
- Follow the designated pedestrian or vehicle route to the property boundary. If a sidewalk ends, use only the signed temporary path; do not improvise through the roadway or work zone.
- Verify the final turn or walk from the boundary to the entrance. Ask the business where the route reaches the door if signs are unclear.
- Allow additional time for detours, queues, reduced crossing points, or mobility needs. Recheck the information shortly before travel when work is changing frequently.
What a complete direction should contain
Directions should identify the approach point, temporary sidewalk or crossing, vehicle restrictions, transit changes, and the entrance name or location. They should also state when the information was last checked. Calgary’s policy for covered City projects calls for timely, plain-language information about planned work, schedules, and anticipated changes; that policy is an example of a municipal standard, not a guarantee for every jurisdiction or project.
If the project page and the business give different instructions, contact the project authority or business before setting out. Do not assume a third-party map or navigation app has captured a temporary closure, relocated crosswalk, or newly opened path.

Where can I park or pick up an order?
Use only a verified location and time
Ask for the current customer parking address, entrance, operating hours, payment or permit rules, accessible spaces, and any construction-related restrictions. For curbside pickup, confirm the exact bay or meeting point, whether stopping is permitted, and how staff will identify the vehicle or order. A construction notice may reserve a curb for equipment even when the street appears open.

The Toronto retailer guide recommends a customer parking and curbside-pickup plan coordinated with the city, business improvement area, and contractor. FHWA says a business can request alternative parking where possible. Those recommendations do not establish that a replacement space exists at a particular site. If no location is confirmed, ask the business or project authority rather than parking in a signed restriction or private lot.
Compare alternatives before choosing one
| Check | Why it matters | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Walking distance and wayfinding | A nearby lot may require a long detour around the work. | Distance, crossings, lighting, signs, and the route to the door. |
| Step-free access | Distance alone does not show whether the path works for a wheelchair, walker, stroller, or other mobility need. | Continuous firm surface, curb ramps, slope, width, and entrance threshold. |
| Opening times | A route can be available during daytime work but closed during a night phase or event. | Access hours for the date and time of your visit. |
| Parking and pickup rules | Construction can remove spaces or change stopping limits. | Permitted vehicle type, time limit, reservation, loading location, and enforcement. |
| Official safety designation | An unofficial shortcut may cross an active work area. | Whether the project or property manager has designated the route for customers. |
Can I use the usual entrance?
Confirm the door before you arrive
Ask whether the regular entrance is open, during which hours, and whether a temporary barrier changes the approach. If it is closed, request the confirmed alternate entrance and precise directions from a recognizable point. Toronto’s guide gives a rear door or laneway as an example; FHWA recommends requesting temporary or secondary access where feasible.
Do not create your own shortcut
An alternate door must be coordinated with the business and project team. A rear lane may be private, used for deliveries, or unavailable outside certain hours. Never move barricades, walk behind construction fencing, enter a loading area, or cross a contractor’s route to reach a door. If the posted directions lead toward an unsafe or unauthorized area, stop and call the business or project contact.
Is there an accessible entrance?
Ask for site-specific facts
Request confirmation of a step-free route from the accessible drop-off or parking point to the entrance, including surface condition, width, slopes, temporary ramps, door operation, and restroom or service access if relevant. Ask whether the route is available for the whole period of your visit; a path may change between construction phases.

Calgary’s Business-Friendly Construction Policy says the City will endeavor to “Provide public access that is safe, accessible, and easy to follow, around City projects.” The statement applies to the policy’s City-led projects and is an objective, not proof that a particular route is accessible. Confirm the actual path with the business or project authority. If assistance is offered, arrange it in advance and do not rely on staff entering an active work zone.
How long will the work last?
Use the latest schedule issued by the responsible project team and record when you checked it. Ask whether the dates describe the entire project or only a phase affecting the business, and whether overnight, weekend, or weather-related work is expected. Construction schedules can change, so a date printed on an older notice may no longer describe the current access arrangement.
Toronto’s retailer guide recommends sharing the timeframe and location of work. Calgary’s policy calls for timely information about schedules and anticipated changes. Neither source supplies a duration for an unnamed project; only the project owner or local authority can provide that location-specific answer.
Where can I check for updates or ask a question?
Use a source that owns the information
- Business channel: the location’s website, phone line, booking message, or customer-service email for hours, entrances, pickup, and immediate visit instructions.
- Project authority: the municipal or transport project page, notice board, hotline, or named liaison for closures, phases, schedules, and temporary routes.
- On-site signs: useful for the final approach, but only when they are current, legible, and consistent with the official route.
FHWA recommends a single agency point of contact and regular progress reports. Calgary’s policy calls for communication channels for inquiries and updates based on project scope. These are planning approaches, not a promise that every project offers a hotline, live map, or daily report. Ask who is responsible for the location and check shortly before travel if access is changing.
What should the business do to make visits easier?
Keep customer information synchronized
The business should update its website and customer messages when hours, entrances, parking, transit access, or pickup arrangements change. Staff need the same instructions so a caller, booking confirmation, and sign do not send customers to different doors. Colorado Department of Transportation guidance, whose page carries a 2024 copyright notice, recommends regular updates to customers, suppliers, and employees and suggests considering adjusted hours or delivery options when appropriate. Those are options, not services every business will provide.

Coordinate access and signs
Toronto recommends coordinating customer parking and curbside pickup with the city, business improvement area, and contractor, and reviewing deliveries, suppliers, utilities, staffing, and customer communications. FHWA recommends clear entrance signs, temporary or secondary access where feasible, alternative parking if possible, avoiding blocked entrances, a single agency contact, and regular project reports.
A professionally printed open for business sign or temporary business access sign can help customers find the property from the roadway. Placement must be coordinated with the project engineer or local government; the guidance does not establish universal permission to attach signs to barriers, poles, sidewalks, or public right of way.
Set realistic expectations
Mitigation can reduce disruption but cannot eliminate every effect. Toronto’s guide explicitly cautions that mitigation may diminish negative financial impacts without eliminating them. A business should explain likely detours and delays rather than promise uninterrupted parking, access, or trading conditions.

Municipal support varies by jurisdiction and project owner. Calgary’s Business-Friendly Construction Policy, approved March 31, 2026, applies to planned City-led construction adjacent to businesses. Its stated scope does not cover third-party utility work, private developers, or work by other orders of government. The City’s FAQ also says the policy does not provide direct financial compensation. That Calgary example must not be treated as a universal rule for another city or project.
More than 1,200 business owners, customers, business organizations, Business Improvement Areas, and construction-industry representatives participated in engagement that informed the Calgary policy. This is an engagement count, not a measure of policy effectiveness or customer behavior. For any possible assistance, ask the agency that owns the work about eligibility, application steps, and deadlines.
If the route is different when you arrive
- Stop at the last safe, public point and read the current project sign.
- Call the business or project contact using a number obtained from an official channel.
- Ask for the entrance name, a safe approach from your exact location, and whether the route is open at that time.
- If you need step-free access, state that requirement explicitly and ask whether staff can meet you at an approved location.
- Do not bypass fencing, cones, gates, equipment, or a closed sidewalk. Leave and reschedule if no safe, authorized route is available.
Visit-day checklist
- Confirm the business is open for your planned date and time.
- Save the latest official route and the business contact before leaving.
- Check parking, pickup, transit, and drop-off rules for the specific project.
- Confirm the entrance and any step-free path, including temporary surface or ramp conditions.
- Allow extra time for detours and changing work phases.
- Follow only signed, public, designated paths and report conflicting or unsafe directions.
The most reliable answer to “Can I get there?” is therefore location-specific: the business should be open or clearly state its closure, and the business or project authority should identify a current, safe route, entrance, and parking or pickup arrangement. Verify those details before every visit while construction continues.
