Extension Cord vs. Power Strip: Which Should You Use?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an extension cord when one portable, corded device needs to reach a receptacle that is farther away. Use a power strip when several suitable devices need outlets at the same location. Neither device increases the capacity of the branch circuit, and neither is automatically safe for every appliance. The cord or strip’s electrical rating, listing, instructions, condition and intended environment determine whether a particular setup is appropriate.

A power strip is essentially an extension cord with several receptacles, but that does not make every power strip a surge protector or permit unlimited connections. Read the product label, add up the connected equipment’s demand, keep the strip directly in a permanently installed receptacle, and avoid loads such as space heaters, refrigerators and microwaves unless the product instructions and applicable rules specifically allow the use.

Start with the job you need the device to do

The simplest distinction is about where you need power. An extension cord moves a receptacle’s power to a portable corded appliance or tool. A power strip leaves the connection at that receptacle but gives you several outlets in one place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose an extension cord for distance: one lamp, tool, appliance or other portable corded device is too far from the wall receptacle.
  • Choose a power strip for outlet count: several low- or moderate-demand devices are grouped at a desk, workbench, entertainment area or similar location.
  • Choose neither as a substitute for wiring when you need a permanent additional outlet, a new circuit or a solution to recurring breaker trips. Those conditions call for an assessment by a qualified local electrical professional.

In both cases, the connected load must be within the device’s rating and the branch circuit’s capacity. More sockets do not create more available power.

What an extension cord is

An extension cord has a plug on one end and a receptacle on the other. Its purpose is to extend the reach of a portable, corded device from an existing receptacle. It is not intended to become a permanent part of a building’s wiring.

When an extension cord is the right choice

Use one when a single device, or a portable corded tool used one at a time, cannot reach the nearest suitable receptacle. Typical examples include a vacuum cleaner used in a room with no nearby outlet, a temporary construction tool, or an outdoor appliance that needs to reach an approved outdoor receptacle.

Select a grounded extension cord when the equipment has a grounding-type plug and the instructions require grounding. A three-prong plug must not be defeated with an adapter or by removing the grounding pin. Match the cord to the setting: an outdoor-rated extension cord has a jacket and construction intended for the conditions identified on its label, while an indoor cord is not automatically suitable for rain, damp soil, sunlight or abrasion.

What to check on an extension cord

Read the cord’s label for its voltage, ampere or wattage rating, length, conductor size, grounding information and indoor or outdoor designation. The equipment’s nameplate or manual supplies the load you need to serve. A longer cord or a heavier-duty tool may require a different cord than a small lamp.

Before every use, inspect the entire assembly. Look for cuts, crushed insulation, exposed conductors, bent or loose blades, burn marks, damaged plugs, a loose receptacle, missing strain relief or evidence of overheating. CPSC’s consumer guidance identifies wire size, strain relief, polarity, continuity and applicable outlet covers or an outdoor jacket as observable safety characteristics for factory-assembled household cords in its stated 120-volt AC scope. A missing or defective characteristic can indicate a substantial product hazard. That guidance does not mean every extension cord carries a CPSC certification, and the 15(j) rule itself does not create a general testing or certification requirement under section 14(a) of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

How to use an extension cord safely

  1. Identify the device and setting. Confirm whether the tool or appliance is portable, whether it will be used indoors or outdoors, and whether the environment is dry, damp, wet, dusty or subject to vehicle or foot traffic.
  2. Read both labels. Compare the cord’s rating and intended use with the device’s nameplate and instructions. The cord must be rated for at least the load to be served and for the voltage and grounding arrangement required by the device.
  3. Inspect before connecting. Remove a damaged cord from service rather than taping over a cut or continuing to use a plug that is hot, loose or discolored.
  4. Plug into an appropriate receptacle. Make sure the plug is fully seated and that the receptacle is suitable for the location. Do not force a three-prong plug into a two-slot receptacle or defeat the ground.
  5. Route it to prevent damage. Keep the cord away from sharp edges, hot surfaces, standing water, doors that can pinch it and vehicle traffic. Do not bury it under rugs or cover it in a way that prevents heat from escaping.
  6. Connect only the intended device. Do not treat the far-end receptacle as a replacement for a power strip unless the cord and all connected equipment are expressly suitable for that arrangement.
  7. Disconnect by the plug. Pull on the plug body, not the cable, and coil the cord loosely after it has cooled and dried.

Construction-site guidance from OSHA distinguishes hard- and extra-hard-usage flexible cords and emphasizes precautions for wet conditions. Those requirements are framed for construction work; they should not be presented as a universal household code. Follow the cord’s instructions, the worksite rules and applicable local requirements. A GFCI may be relevant in a particular wet or damp application, but it is not a universal answer for every household use.

What a power strip is

A power strip is a corded device with multiple receptacles at one location. It lets several compatible devices share one wall receptacle, commonly at a desk, electronics station, workbench or temporary work area. UL Solutions describes the basic relationship this way: “The difference is the power strip is just an extension cord with a lot of outlets.” The extra outlets are a convenience, not extra branch-circuit capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power strip versus surge protector

A plain power strip distributes the incoming power to its receptacles. It is not automatically a surge protector. UL says a surge protector includes an additional component intended to clamp surges. If surge protection matters, look for that feature on the product labeling and instructions; do not infer it from the number of outlets, an illuminated switch or the strip’s appearance.

Some products also advertise overload protection, a circuit breaker, USB charging or other features. Treat each feature as a product-specific claim. Verify what the label says, the rating of the protective device and the procedure for resetting or replacing it. An overload switch does not make an unsuitable load suitable, and it does not permit interconnecting strips.

How to choose and use a power strip

  1. Define the equipment group. List every device that may be connected at the same time, including chargers, monitors, task lighting and accessories.
  2. Check the strip’s listing and rating. Use a listed or labeled product from a reputable testing program when required by the setting. Read its voltage, ampere or wattage rating and any restrictions printed on the strip or packaging.
  3. Check the connected load. Use the equipment nameplates or manuals to determine the demand. The number of occupied sockets is irrelevant if the combined load exceeds the strip’s rating.
  4. Plug the strip directly into a permanently installed receptacle. OSHA’s 2002 interpretation says listed power strips should be connected directly to a permanently installed receptacle, not to an extension cord or another power strip. The product instructions and applicable local rules control; do not treat this workplace interpretation as a complete household electrical code.
  5. Place it where it can be inspected. Keep the strip visible, dry and ventilated. Do not hide it under carpeting, behind insulation or where furniture can crush the cord.
  6. Use the switch and reset feature as instructed. If the strip trips, feels hot, smells of burning plastic or shows discoloration, unplug it and remove the cause. Do not repeatedly reset an unexplained overload.
  7. Disconnect unused equipment when appropriate. Turning off or unplugging equipment reduces the connected load and avoids leaving damaged adapters energized.

Outlet count is not load capacity

A six-outlet strip is not six times as powerful as a one-outlet strip. Every connected device draws from the same receptacle, branch circuit and service. The relevant limit is the strip’s electrical rating and the total demand of the equipment, not the number of open sockets.

OSHA’s interpretation quotes the installation rule in 29 CFR 1910.303(b)(2): “Listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.” It also quotes 29 CFR 1910.304(b)(2): “Outlet devices shall have an ampere rating not less than the load to be served.” These statements explain why a strip’s label and the connected load matter more than its physical outlet count.

Loads that deserve special caution

OSHA cautions against using power strips for high-power appliances such as space heaters, refrigerators and microwaves. Those appliances can demand substantially more current than the low-demand electronics for which many strips are intended, and their motors or heating elements can create operating conditions the strip is not designed to handle. Use the appliance instructions and the strip’s rating; when they do not clearly permit the combination, connect the appliance to a suitable permanently installed receptacle instead.

Do not assume that a low-power device is harmless merely because its plug fits. A strip can be overloaded by several modest loads operating together, by a startup surge from equipment with a motor, or by a device whose rating is misunderstood. If a breaker trips, a receptacle or strip becomes warm, or you notice buzzing, arcing, odor or discoloration, disconnect the equipment and investigate the cause rather than adding another strip.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Extension cord Power strip
Primary job Extends reach from a receptacle to a portable corded device. Provides multiple receptacles at one location.
Best use case One device is too far from a suitable receptacle. Several suitable, generally lower-demand devices are grouped near one receptacle.
What to verify Indoor or outdoor suitability, voltage and load rating, grounding where required, cord condition and routing. Listing or certification, voltage and load rating, connected equipment’s demand, placement and product instructions.
Surge protection Not implied by being an extension cord. Not implied by being a power strip; a surge protector has an additional surge-clamping component.
Interconnection Do not use damaged cords or create an improvised chain to reach permanent wiring needs. OSHA’s workplace interpretation says to connect a listed strip directly to a permanently installed receptacle, not to an extension cord or another strip.
Main limitation The cord’s rating and condition must match the device and environment. Every connected load shares the strip and branch circuit; outlet count does not increase capacity.

Choosing between the two in common situations

One lamp or portable tool across the room

Use an extension cord with the correct indoor rating and load capacity. Keep the route clear of walkways, doors and pinch points. A power strip would add outlets you do not need and would not improve the circuit’s capacity.

Several computer and charging devices at a desk

A listed power strip may be appropriate when the combined demand is within its rating and the strip can plug directly into a permanently installed receptacle. Confirm whether the product includes surge protection instead of assuming it does. Keep the strip accessible and do not add an extension cord or second strip to reach a different part of the room.

Two holes on back allow you install the power strip on wall, workshop, make your table clean

A temporary workbench with one tool at a time

An extension cord may be the better fit if the work requires a single portable tool at a distance. Select a cord rated for the tool and the work environment, inspect it before use and protect it from abrasion, moisture and traffic. Construction-site rules may impose additional requirements for flexible cords.

A space heater, microwave or refrigerator

Do not place these high-power appliances on a power strip unless the appliance and strip instructions specifically allow it and the ratings match. OSHA specifically cautions against such uses. A suitable permanently installed receptacle is generally the safer starting point, with local requirements and a qualified electrician consulted when the receptacle or circuit is inadequate.

Outdoor lighting or equipment

Use an outdoor-rated extension cord only when its label and the equipment instructions cover the conditions. Inspect the jacket, plugs and receptacles, keep connections out of standing water and follow any applicable GFCI and local requirements for the location. An indoor power strip is not made outdoor-rated by placing it inside a covered area.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“There is an empty outlet, so I can plug in another appliance”

Correct the assumption by checking the strip’s rating and the total connected load. An empty socket says nothing about remaining ampacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A power strip protects my equipment from surges”

Check the product description for an actual surge-protection component. If the label only identifies a power strip, treat it as an outlet distributor, not as a surge protector.

“I can connect the strip to an extension cord to reach farther”

Do not create that arrangement where the applicable instructions or rules prohibit it. OSHA’s workplace interpretation directs listed strips to a permanently installed receptacle and says not to connect them to extension cords or other strips.

“The cord still works, so a small cut is acceptable”

Remove a cord with damaged insulation, exposed conductors, crushed sections, loose blades, failed strain relief or heat damage from service. Tape is not a substitute for replacing a damaged factory-assembled cord.

“A breaker trip can be solved by buying a bigger strip”

A larger-looking strip does not increase the branch circuit’s capacity. Unplug equipment, identify the combined load and determine whether the circuit or wiring needs professional evaluation. Recurring trips, hot receptacles, arcing or burning odor warrant prompt attention from a qualified local electrical professional.

When a temporary cord or strip is the wrong solution

Extension cords and power strips are temporary connection devices. If a room routinely needs power at a location where no receptacle exists, the durable answer may be a properly installed receptacle or circuit. Likewise, if normal equipment repeatedly overloads the available circuit, adding cords or strips can conceal a wiring or load-planning problem.

Seek qualified local electrical advice when you need permanent outlets, are unsure whether a circuit is grounded, experience recurring breaker trips, find heat or damage at a receptacle, or must supply equipment in a wet, dusty or construction environment governed by specialized rules. Local electrical codes, the equipment listing and the product instructions determine the compliant solution for that setting.

A practical decision checklist

  • Is the need mainly distance or multiple outlets?
  • What voltage, amperage or wattage does each connected device require?
  • Does the cord or strip carry a rating at least suitable for the load?
  • Is the product intended for the actual indoor, outdoor, damp or construction environment?
  • Does the equipment require grounding, and is the grounding path intact?
  • Is the strip listed or labeled, and have you read its instructions?
  • Is a power strip plugged directly into a permanently installed receptacle rather than another cord or strip?
  • Are high-power appliances such as heaters, refrigerators or microwaves excluded unless the instructions expressly support the use?
  • Are the jacket, plug, receptacles and strain relief free of cuts, crushing, heat damage and looseness?
  • Would a permanent receptacle or circuit solve a recurring need more safely?

Bottom line

Pick an extension cord to bridge a temporary distance to one portable corded device. Pick a power strip to place several appropriate loads at one location. In either case, the label, listing, instructions, condition, environment and total load control the decision. A power strip is not automatically a surge protector, an empty outlet is not spare capacity, and neither device replaces properly installed electrical wiring.
