A 120-inch 16:9 projector screen has a viewable image area approximately 104.6 inches wide by 58.8 inches high. The 120-inch measurement is the diagonal—not the screen’s width, frame, case, or total installation footprint.
For construction and room-planning purposes, allow additional space for the frame or housing, mounting hardware, electrical connections, top drop, borders, and cable routing. The exact outside dimensions depend on the screen model and aspect ratio.

What does “120-inch projector screen” mean?
Screen size is normally stated as the diagonal measurement of the intended image area. A diagonal of 120 inches therefore does not identify one unique width and height. The screen’s aspect ratio determines its shape.
When a manufacturer advertises a 120-inch screen, the figure generally describes the nominal viewable image size. It may not include:

For most home theaters, the 16:9 figure is the one buyers mean. A manufacturer reference table lists a 120-inch 16:9 image at approximately 2,656 mm by 1,494 mm—about 104.6 by 58.8 inches. ProjectorCentral’s reference dimensions show essentially the same result.
How wide and tall is a 120-inch 16:9 screen?
The viewable image is approximately:
- 104.6 inches wide
- 58.8 inches high
- 120 inches diagonally
The image area is approximately 6,153 square inches, or 42.7 square feet. Borders and frame material are not part of that projected area.
How to calculate the width and height
For a diagonal D and an aspect ratio of W:H:
Width = D × W ÷ √(W2 + H2)
Height = D × H ÷ √(W2 + H2)
For a 120-inch 16:9 screen:
Width = 120 × 16 ÷ √(162 + 92) ≈ 104.6 inches

Rounding explains small differences between calculated dimensions and manufacturer specifications. A product’s stated “screen width” may also include borders, while “overall width” normally includes the entire frame or case.
Why aspect ratio changes the dimensions
Two products can both be called 120-inch screens while having noticeably different shapes:
- 16:9: A wide format suited to HDTV, streaming video, modern movies, console gaming, and general home theater.
- 16:10: Slightly narrower and taller than 16:9, often useful for laptops, computer displays, offices, and education.
- 4:3: Taller and more square, appropriate for legacy presentations, older projectors, and some archival content.
- 1:1: Square, commonly selected for specialized presentation or portable applications.
- 2.35:1: Very wide and short, intended for dedicated cinemascope installations.
Choose the ratio based on the content and projector rather than the diagonal alone. Stewart recommends starting with the intended content and room limitations, then selecting the screen dimensions that work for both.
Viewable image size versus actual product size
Screen specifications can contain several different measurements. Read the manufacturer’s dimension sheet carefully.
| Measurement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Nominal diagonal | The advertised size, such as 120 inches. |
| Viewable width | The width of the image projected onto the screen. |
| Viewable height | The height of the projected image. |
| Screen width | May include the image material plus borders or masking. |
| Overall width | The outside width of a frame, case, or housing. |
| Overall height | The complete installed height, sometimes including drop or hardware. |
| Case length | The length of a retractable screen’s housing. |
| Top drop | Black material above the image area, often used to position the image lower on a wall. |
For example, an Elite Screens 120-inch 16:9 manual model lists approximately 104.6 inches of viewable width and 58.8 inches of viewable height, but approximately 110.9 inches of case length and 69.4 inches of overall height. See the Elite Screens manual dimensions.

A 120-inch 16:9 Stewart WallScreen Deluxe lists an image of approximately 104.5 by 58.75 inches and an overall size of approximately 111.125 by 65.375 inches. Those are model-specific measurements, not universal dimensions. Stewart’s specification sheet identifies the relevant product measurements.
How much wall space does a 120-inch screen need?
For an initial construction layout, do not reserve only 104.6 by 58.8 inches for a 120-inch 16:9 screen.
A practical planning range is:
- Horizontal space: approximately 105 to 112 inches for many fixed-frame or retractable 16:9 installations.
- Vertical space: approximately 60 inches for the image alone, or roughly 65 to 75 inches or more when accounting for a frame, casing, top drop, and mounting arrangement.
Some products will exceed these ranges. Leave room for:
- Frame thickness and side borders
- Case length and depth
- Ceiling or wall brackets
- Power outlets and motor controls
- Signal and control cable routing
- Access for installation and future service
- Ceiling trim, soffits, doors, windows, speakers, and lighting
- The screen’s retracted position
Before framing, blocking, or installing electrical work, obtain the exact product drawing. A 105-inch-wide wall is not automatically adequate: a case or frame could extend several inches beyond the 104.6-inch image.
Installation checklist for a construction or remodeling project
- Confirm the aspect ratio. Use 16:9 for most modern home-theater video; consider 16:10 or 4:3 for computer or legacy presentation sources.
- Measure the usable wall area. Account for trim, outlets, windows, doors, built-ins, speakers, and light switches.
- Record both image and outside dimensions. Use viewable width and height for the picture; use overall width and height for construction clearance.
- Plan mounting support. Fixed frames and retractable housings may require blocking, suitable anchors, or ceiling support.
- Plan power and controls. Motorized screens may need an outlet, switch wiring, remote-control access, or low-voltage control routing.
- Verify top drop and image elevation. A screen can fit vertically on paper but place the image too high or too low for comfortable viewing.
- Check projector geometry. Confirm throw distance, lens shift, ceiling height, digital zoom limits, and mounting position.
- Check the screen material. Match the surface to room lighting, seating angles, and standard-, short-, or ultra-short-throw projection.
- Keep service access in mind. Do not permanently obstruct a motor, case, power connection, or mounting hardware.
Projector placement is a separate calculation
A 120-inch diagonal does not guarantee that a particular projector can fill the screen. The projector must have an appropriate throw ratio and enough optical range for the planned mounting position. Lens shift, resolution, brightness, ceiling height, and aspect-ratio settings also matter.

Use the projector manufacturer’s throw-distance chart or ProjectorCentral’s projector and screen calculator. Enter the specific projector model rather than assuming every projector can produce a 120-inch image.
Potential failure points include insufficient throw range, excessive digital zoom, limited lens shift, an unsuitable ceiling position, or an aspect-ratio mismatch that leaves unused screen area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a 120-inch screen right for your room?
Size alone is not a quality rating. A large screen spreads the projector’s light over a substantial area, so brightness, screen gain, room lighting, wall color, and image uniformity become increasingly important.

Seating distance
There is no single universally correct seating distance for a 120-inch screen. The appropriate position depends on projector resolution, content, viewer preference, field of view, pixel visibility, and whether the screen is used for cinema, sports, gaming, presentations, or text. Treat seating distance as a viewing-preference and image-quality decision rather than a fixed rule.
Ambient light and screen material
A matte-white surface is often a sensible baseline in a controlled room. In a brighter room, an ambient-light-rejecting material may improve perceived contrast, but it can also narrow viewing angles or introduce hotspotting, sparkle, or compatibility limitations. A 120-inch screen is not automatically better in a bright room unless the projector and surface can produce a satisfactory image.

Fixed-frame, retractable, electric, and portable screens
Fixed-frame
Fixed-frame screens generally provide a flat, predictable projection surface and suit dedicated theaters. They require permanent wall space, cannot be hidden easily, and occupy more than the image dimensions because of their frame.
Manual retractable
Manual pull-down screens disappear when not in use and can work well in multipurpose rooms. Their housings may be wider and taller than expected, and the material can develop waves or curl over time. Elite’s Manual Series illustrates the difference between a retractable product and its viewable image size.
Motorized
Electric screens offer convenient deployment and concealment, but require power and control planning and contain more mechanical components. Some models are unsuitable for ultra-short-throw projection; for example, Elite identifies limitations for its Spectrum2 Series.
Portable or floor-standing
Portable designs can avoid permanent wall installation, but legs, cases, supports, and setup clearance add to the room footprint. Product dimensions should be checked in both deployed and stored configurations. Elite publishes separate portable dimensions for some models in its ezCinema dimensions document.
Special considerations for ultra-short-throw projectors
Ultra-short-throw projectors are particularly sensitive to screen surface geometry. A conventional material may produce hotspotting, uneven brightness, viewing-angle problems, or visible surface artifacts when illuminated from a very steep angle.
Do not select a UST screen solely because its diagonal is 120 inches. Confirm that the screen material and frame are specifically compatible with the projector’s throw geometry. Elite distinguishes between materials with UST or short-throw limitations, such as those described for CineGrey 3D, and options marketed for UST use, such as products in its Sable Frame 2 range.

Common measurement mistakes
- Calling 104.6 inches the universal width: That is the approximate viewable width of a 120-inch 16:9 image, not every product’s outside width.
- Ignoring the aspect ratio: A 120-inch 4:3 screen is 96 inches wide and 72 inches high, which is a very different wall shape from 16:9.
- Measuring only the bright image: Frames, borders, casings, and brackets require additional space.
- Forgetting the top drop: A retractable screen may need considerably more vertical clearance than its image height.
- Assuming any projector can fill it: Throw ratio, lens shift, brightness, resolution, and projection type must be checked.
- Using a conventional material with UST: UST compatibility must be verified for the specific surface and projector.
Bottom line
For the standard home-theater format, a 120-inch projector screen produces a viewable image approximately 104.6 inches wide by 58.8 inches high. Plan for roughly 105 to 112 inches or more of actual horizontal installation space and substantially more than 58.8 inches vertically, depending on the frame, casing, drop, brackets, and room layout. Always use the selected screen’s technical drawing and the projector’s throw-distance data before finalizing construction.
