A narrowed passage accelerates a moving fluid and lowers its local static pressure. In a pneumatic vacuum generator, compressed air supplies that moving stream; in a water demonstration, flowing water can provide the motive flow. The low-pressure region can then draw air or another fluid through a side port.
What the Venturi effect does
When a fluid enters a narrower section of a tube, its velocity increases. Under the conditions described by Bernoulli’s principle, the increase in velocity is accompanied by a decrease in static pressure at the restriction. That pressure difference is what produces suction.

The effect can be studied with air or water. A Venturi tube with pressure taps lets you compare pressure at the wide and narrow sections, while a simpler arrangement can show that the low-pressure region draws in air or moves a lightweight object. The pressure drop is local: it is not the same as creating a permanently empty container.

PASCO’s Venturi Apparatus (ME-8598) is a dedicated teaching example with a changing cross-section and pressure measurement points. TecQuipment’s instrumented Venturi equipment similarly demonstrates pressure and flow behavior. These products illustrate the principle; neither is required for a qualitative demonstration.

“Vacuum pump” means two different things here
A pneumatic Venturi vacuum generator
A pneumatic generator uses compressed air as its motive fluid. Air passes through a nozzle or restriction, creating a lower-pressure region at a suction port. The compressed air and the air drawn through that port then leave through the exhaust.
Festo summarizes its equipment this way: “Festo vacuum generators have a single-stage design and work according to the Venturi principle, i.e. they generate the vacuum from compressed air.” A compressor or other regulated compressed-air connection is therefore a required system dependency, not an optional accessory. The exhaust also needs a safe discharge path.

Alicat Scientific describes a customer setup that produced “a vacuum of about one PSIA.” That is a result for the specific setup in its case description, not a performance promise for a homemade device. Parker’s MCA inline series lists product-specific operating and vacuum ratings, including 14 to 114 psig operating pressure and a 24 inHg vacuum rating; verify the current configuration before relying on those specifications.

Water can be the moving fluid instead. A water stream accelerates through a restriction and can lower pressure at a connected opening, allowing air to be drawn in. Such an arrangement needs a water supply, a drain or collection route, and containment appropriate to the apparatus.

This is useful for showing the effect, but it is not automatically a practical replacement for a mechanical vacuum pump. Performance depends on the geometry, flow rate, pressure losses, and the amount of air or liquid being drawn.
How to plan a safe educational demonstration
The sources describe several educational arrangements rather than one universally validated DIY design. IOP Spark’s classroom activity uses a Bernoulli/Venturi tube, tubing, a funnel, an air pump and a lightweight ball; suppliers’ arrangements differ, and some tubes are fragile glassware. Use the following as a planning sequence, not as a guaranteed construction recipe:

- Choose the motive fluid. Use a controlled air source for a pneumatic demonstration, or a controlled water flow for an aspirator-style setup.
- Provide a restriction and a side connection. The narrowed section creates the velocity increase; the side port is where the pressure reduction can draw air.
- Include an exhaust or discharge route. Pneumatic generators exhaust motive and entrained air together. Water arrangements require a drain, collection vessel or other managed outlet.
- Secure every connection. Support tubing and vessels so a loose line, fragile tube or moving hose cannot whip, tip or spill.
- Start with gentle flow and observe. Increase flow gradually while watching the suction port, joints and outlet. Do not assume a household pump, nozzle or tube will produce a particular vacuum level.
- Measure if the result matters. A pressure gauge or sensor at more than one point can show whether the pressure actually falls through the restriction. Without measurement, describe the result qualitatively.
Prevent uncontrolled water discharge
The University of Iowa warns that excessive air pressure in a Venturi-tube demonstration can pull water high enough for it to be blown out the other side. The source does not establish a universal safe pressure limit, so do not substitute an invented number.
- Use a controllable, regulated flow rather than opening an unrestricted air line.
- Place the apparatus in a tray or other area that can tolerate discharge.
- Secure the tube and collection vessel, and keep people away from the outlet path.
- Stop the flow if water rises toward the outlet, connections begin leaking, or the apparatus vibrates or shifts.
- Protect electrical equipment from spray and dry the work area before changing the setup.
Which approach fits your goal?
| Approach | Motive fluid and infrastructure | Best use | Control and measurement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pneumatic Venturi generator | Compressed air, a suction port and an exhaust | Creating suction for a pneumatic system or demonstrating ejector action | Use a regulator and pressure measurement where available | Consumes compressed air; it is not self-powered |
| Water aspirator-style demonstration | Water supply, flow control, drain or containment | Showing suction with water as the motive stream | Flow and pressure measurement improve repeatability | Excess pressure can discharge water unexpectedly |
| Instrumented teaching apparatus | Air or water loop with dedicated pressure taps and sensors | Quantifying the pressure-speed relationship | Designed for measurements at multiple points | Educational equipment, not a necessary part of a basic demonstration |
The available sources do not provide a direct efficiency comparison between air-powered and water-powered arrangements. They also do not establish common vacuum, noise, flow or air-consumption values for all Venturi designs.
What this DIY project can and cannot prove
- It can show that a restriction in a moving stream is associated with higher local speed and lower static pressure.
- It can show air being drawn through a side opening when the pressure difference is sufficient.
- With gauges or sensors, it can quantify pressure changes at selected points.
- It cannot establish a universal vacuum rating from the shape of a homemade device alone.
- It cannot turn a passive tube into a self-powered pump; a continuing motive flow is required.
For a repeatable construction or a specified vacuum level, use a documented generator or measured apparatus rated for the intended pressure and fluid. Treat commercial products such as Festo or Parker generators as ready-made pneumatic components, not as proof that an untested household assembly will perform identically.
