When choosing a saw, compare its capacity and blade-changing setup with the work you plan to do—not just its maximum speed or throat depth.
Choose a blade that fits your saw and your cut
Scroll-saw blades come in pinned (pin-end) and plain-end (pinless) formats. The saw’s holders determine which format it accepts, so check the manual for your exact model before buying. Blade length is model-specific, too: the Rikon 10-600VS product listing specifies 5-inch pinned or plain-end blades, while the Axminster manual specifies 5-inch pin or plain-end blades for the saw it describes. Those examples do not establish a universal standard.
Blade width and thickness influence turning and control. A narrower blade can follow tighter curves; a wider blade is generally better suited to straighter cuts and larger curves. Delicate work in thin material often calls for a thin, narrow blade. For thicker or harder stock, select a blade rated for the material and thickness, and avoid forcing the cut, which can bend or twist the blade. Follow the blade maker’s recommendations and the saw manual rather than treating these general guidelines as a capacity rating.
Match tooth pattern to finish and chip clearance
- Regular-tooth: a general-purpose pattern.
- Skip-tooth: spaces between teeth help clear chips and can support faster cutting, often with a rougher edge.
- Double-tooth: trades cutting speed for a smoother cut.
- Reverse-tooth: can improve the finish on the underside by reducing tear-out.
- Spiral: cuts in multiple directions without turning the workpiece, which can help when the saw’s throat limits movement; the tradeoff is often a rougher finish.
Check the blade package for its intended materials and use. Tooth pattern does not override the saw’s blade-format requirements.

What to compare when choosing a scroll saw
Start with the size and type of work you expect to cut. Throat depth affects how far a workpiece can extend from the blade while turning; maximum cut thickness limits stock depth. Also check blade compatibility, how blades are installed and tensioned, the speed range, table angle, saw stability, dust management, and whether support and replacement parts are available.
The Rikon 10-600VS manufacturer listing gives one model-specific example: a 15-3/4-inch throat, 2-inch stated maximum cut capacity, variable speed of 550 to 1,650 strokes per minute, compatibility with 5-inch pinned or plain-end blades, and a 1-3/8-inch dust port. These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not independent performance results or a market-wide recommendation. Recheck the listing and manual for the exact model before purchase.

- Flying Dutchman scroll saw blades are 5" long and pinless.
- Milled blades, which makes a sharper cutting edge.
- Manufactured in Germany with top-grade high-quality hardened steel.
- Ultra Reverse pinless blades are our top selling scroll saw blade. They have a unique design where every third tooth is reversed to prevent splintering on the underside of the project. They also have an aggressively fast cut, while at the same time being a smooth cut.
- The Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse Five Dozen Pinless Scroll Saw Blade Variety Pack comes with one dozen of each of the following sizes: #2/0, #1, #3, #5, and #7.
A larger throat or higher top speed is not automatically a better fit; prioritize capacity and controls that suit your work. A dust port alone does not establish that a particular hose or collector will connect: verify the required adapter and hose dimensions.

Use the manual supplied with your exact saw; controls, capacities, and procedures can differ by model. The Axminster manual’s operating guidance includes setting correct blade tension, orienting the teeth downward, keeping fingers clear, holding stock firmly against the table, and feeding only as quickly as the blade can cut.

- Install the specified blade. Confirm its length and end format against the manual, then orient the teeth as the manual directs.
- Set blade tension correctly. Use the tensioning procedure for your model; do not assume one setting applies to every saw or blade.
- Secure and support the work. Keep it stable and firmly against the table, with hands positioned clear of the blade and away from awkward reaches.
- Feed steadily without forcing. Let the blade do the cutting. If the blade bends or the work resists, slow down and reassess the blade choice and setup.
- Manage dust for the material and setup. Use appropriate dust protection and extraction where the work is dusty. Confirm that any collector and hose fit the saw’s port.
Do not take a speed, feed rate, or safe stock thickness from another saw’s manual as a universal limit. Use the ratings and instructions for your own model and blade.
