Stage 1 of the City of Guelph’s Exhibition Street reconstruction is expected to begin around October 13, 2026. The October 5 City notice says Robertson Drive and Verney Street will have localized closures, with no through traffic at those locations but local access maintained. These dates and details are anticipated milestones, not guarantees; check the City’s current construction updates for changes.
When does Exhibition Street construction start?
The City anticipates Stage 1 will begin on or around October 13, 2026, and finish by December 2026. The City’s October 5, 2026 notice presents these as estimates. Later stages are also subject to change.

The City construction index lists the broader Exhibition Area – Phase 1 footprint as Exhibition Street from Division Street to Robertson Drive, plus watermain work on Robertson Drive and Verney Street; the October notice specifies the Stage 2 reconstruction segment as St. Andrew Street to Robertson Drive. Which streets are closed in Guelph?
For Stage 1, the October 5 notice describes two localized closures:

- Robertson Drive: closed from Exhibition Street to a point approximately 80 metres west of Exhibition Street.
- Verney Street: closed from Exhibition Street to a point approximately 60 metres east of Exhibition Street.
No through traffic is permitted at the closures. The City says, “Local access will be maintained.” Follow posted signs and use alternate routes if you are travelling through the area. Temporary pedestrian sidewalk disruptions are also possible; follow the signs directing pedestrians around work areas.
Can residents still access their homes and driveways?
Local access is to be maintained at the street closures, but access may be affected temporarily as crews work or move equipment near private driveways. The City says the contractor will provide notice of driveway disruptions. An earlier City project information package also cautions that access may sometimes be restricted within active work zones and that alternate parking arrangements may be needed. Check notices from the contractor or City for instructions specific to your property.

Will Guelph Transit or garbage pickup change?
The October 5 notice says Guelph Transit is not expected to change and waste collection is not expected to change. Contractors may move waste carts to a designated collection spot and return them after pickup, so label each cart with your house number.
Could my water be shut off?
Short water or sewer service interruptions are possible. The City’s March 2026 project information package says service will be maintained as much as possible, but brief interruptions may occur, especially when an individual service is transferred to a new pipe. It says most interruptions should last a few hours, take place during working hours, and receive advance written notice when possible. The October 5 notice does not give property-specific interruption dates, so rely on current notices for your home or business.

The March package also notes that homes or businesses built before the mid-1950s could have a lead water service pipe. That is not a finding about any specific property. The City directs residents to its resources on lead, testing and rebates: Lead in drinking water.
What should nearby residents and businesses expect?
Noise, dust and vibration
The earlier City information package says construction can create dust, noise and vibration. It describes planned measures including watering exposed excavation, sweeping muddied roads, using quieter temporary generators and operating equipment during hours permitted by City noise bylaws.

Building-condition inspections
The March package says pre-construction building-condition inspections are required before work starts. An independent inspection firm is to arrange appointments, with notice expected two to four weeks before construction in each phase. The inspection records existing conditions in case damage occurs.
Pedestrian routes
Sidewalks may be disrupted as work progresses. The earlier package describes temporary gravel sidewalks after existing sidewalks are removed; follow the signs posted at the site for the route currently available.

Where can I check for changes?
Construction dates, closures, access arrangements and utility interruptions can change as work proceeds. Use the City of Guelph’s construction project updates and any direct notices from the contractor for the latest information. The March 2026 information package included an earlier July 2026 start and fall 2027 finish; those are superseded by the October 5 notice’s current stage schedule.
