Essential Tips for Watering Your Yard

Use rainfall and sprinkler measurements—not a one-size-fits-all schedule—to water your yard according to its soil, slope, plants and changing weather.

Water your yard according to what the soil, plants, rainfall and sprinkler actually need—not by a fixed calendar. EPA WaterSense says many landscapes need about one inch of water per week, including rain, but the right amount varies by location, weather and plants. Measure your sprinkler’s output, watch for runoff, and adjust as conditions change.

How much water does a yard need?

Use about one inch per week, including rainfall, as a broad starting point—not a prescription. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense guidance notes that needs vary with location, recent weather and the plants in the landscape. Local watering restrictions also apply. For area-specific advice, check with your local Cooperative Extension Service or water utility.

Account for recent rain before adding irrigation. A rain gauge can help you track rainfall, but the soil and plants matter too: soil type, slope, sun and shade, plant species, and whether grass or other plants are newly established can all affect how quickly a yard dries and how much water it needs.

How do you measure sprinkler output?

Measure the water reaching the yard rather than guessing how long to run a sprinkler. EPA WaterSense recommends placing several empty containers around the lawn and timing how long it takes the sprinkler to collect a half inch of water. Its example is empty tuna cans; sprinkler catch cups work as well.

  1. Set several containers in different parts of the lawn, including areas that may receive less spray.
  2. Run the sprinkler and note how long it takes to collect a half inch of water.
  3. Compare the amounts in the containers. Different levels can reveal uneven coverage or misdirected spray.
  4. Use the measured run time as a starting point, then observe the yard and adjust for rain, weather and site conditions.

WaterSense suggests trying the measured run time twice a week as an initial experiment. That is a starting method, not a schedule every yard should follow: change it if rainfall, plant needs, local guidance or the landscape’s response calls for a different approach.

When and how often should you water?

Avoid watering in the middle of the day, when more water can be lost to evaporation. Let rainfall count toward the yard’s water needs, and revisit your schedule when weather or seasons change rather than continuing an outdated routine.

Frequency depends on the site. Newly planted grass and plants may need different establishment care from an established landscape, while sun exposure, shade and plant type also influence water needs. Follow local guidance for your region and comply with any local watering rules.

How can you prevent pooling and runoff?

If water starts pooling, stop the irrigation. Clay-rich soil and steep slopes can make it harder for water to soak in when it is applied too quickly. Use shorter watering intervals with breaks between them so water has time to absorb before the next cycle.

  • Point sprinkler spray at the yard, not sidewalks, driveways or streets.
  • Check for leaks, broken or clogged sprinkler heads, and areas that receive too much or too little water.

Frequent overwatering can contribute to shallow roots, disease and fungus, as well as runoff. Applying more water is not necessarily better care.

Should you use an irrigation controller?

A controller is an option for an installed irrigation system, not a requirement for every yard. WaterSense describes two types of labeled controllers that respond to different conditions:

Controller type What it uses How it affects watering
Weather-based Local weather and landscape conditions Adjusts irrigation schedules in response to those conditions.
Soil moisture-based Moisture measured in the ground Can override scheduled irrigation when the soil does not need watering.

Neither type is a universal best choice; the useful option depends on the installed system and the conditions you want it to account for. If you water manually or use a hose-end sprinkler, measuring output and updating your approach as the yard changes may be enough. If an installed system is difficult to manage or appears to waste water, an irrigation professional can inspect or audit its operation.

What should you check as the yard changes?

Reassess irrigation when seasons, weather or planting needs change. Inspect the system periodically for leaks, damaged or clogged heads, uneven coverage and spray landing on pavement. Keep the measured sprinkler output in mind, but use rainfall, soil conditions and the plants’ needs to decide whether the schedule still fits.
