Success in housekeeping and maintenance depends on more than cleaning quickly: workers need dependable routines, attention to detail, safe work habits, clear communication, and practical judgment about when to fix a problem or report it. The title covers distinct jobs, from preparing hotel rooms for guests to cleaning and maintaining offices, schools, hospitals, and other buildings. Duties and entry requirements vary by employer and location.

What skills will I use in this role?

The skills overlap across housekeeping and building-cleaning jobs, but how they are used depends on the setting. A hotel housekeeper is preparing a room for a guest; a janitor or building cleaner may be responsible for shared spaces, sanitation, waste, floors, and the general condition of a facility.

Attention to detail

Thoroughness means noticing what a quick pass can miss: a surface that needs another wipe, a low supply, a spill, or damage that should be reported. The UK National Careers Service lists attention to detail and thoroughness among the skills used by hotel housekeepers. National Careers Service: Hotel housekeeper

Time management and reliable routines

Rooms and shared areas often need to be ready on a schedule. Workers have to sequence tasks, keep track of supplies, and complete assigned work within a shift without skipping essential steps. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) identifies time-management skills as important for janitors and building cleaners. BLS: Janitors and Building Cleaners

Communication and customer service

Clear communication helps teams coordinate work, lets supervisors know about damage or a hazard, and ensures guest or building-user requests reach the right person. In hotels, housekeepers may respond to guest requests or pass messages to supervisors. Flexibility, initiative, and customer-service skills are also identified in the UK career profile.

Safe handling of products and equipment

Workers need to learn how to use and maintain the equipment and supplies their employer provides. BLS says new janitors and building cleaners commonly learn equipment use and maintenance on the job. Cleaning agents can present occupational hazards; follow employer training, product-label and safety-data instructions, and applicable workplace rules. Do not mix products unless the relevant instructions and employer procedures explicitly direct it. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) describes potential health hazards associated with cleaning work. NIOSH: Protecting Workers Who Use Cleaning Chemicals

Stamina and sound movement habits

Work may involve prolonged standing and walking, bending, and lifting supplies or equipment. BLS describes janitorial work as potentially strenuous and notes that safety and ergonomics training may be provided. Physical demands vary by task and workplace.

Practical problem-solving—and knowing your limits

Some janitors make routine repairs, such as addressing a leaky faucet, while reporting major repairs to a manager. Hotel housekeepers typically report room damage or maintenance needs rather than taking on every repair themselves. Follow the role’s procedures: a useful part of problem-solving is recognizing when an issue is outside your training or authority.

What do the jobs involve day to day?

Hotel housekeeping

Hotel housekeepers prepare accommodation for guests. Typical duties include cleaning rooms, making beds, replacing linen and towels, restocking guest items and bathroom supplies, handling laundry, and cleaning shared areas. They may also respond to or route guest requests and report damage or maintenance needs. The UK National Careers Service summarizes the purpose this way: “Hotel housekeepers make sure that hotel accommodation is clean and tidy and ready for guests.”

Janitorial and building-cleaning work

Janitors and building cleaners help keep facilities clean, sanitary, orderly, and in good condition. Their work may include emptying trash; sweeping, mopping, or vacuuming; cleaning restrooms; addressing spills and hazards with suitable equipment; cleaning frequently touched surfaces; ordering supplies; making minor repairs; reporting major repairs; and securing buildings. The mix depends on the employer and building. BLS describes the occupation as work across many types of buildings, rather than a single setting.

How to become a hotel housekeeper or building cleaner

Applying for U.S. janitorial work

BLS says formal education is typically not required for entry-level janitorial and building-cleaning work, and most workers learn on the job, often alongside an experienced worker. Some employers may prefer a high school diploma or equivalent. BLS also says certification is not required, although it can demonstrate competence. An employer’s own qualifications and procedures still apply.

Entering hotel housekeeping in the UK

The National Careers Service describes several routes: apply directly, take a relevant college course, pursue an apprenticeship, or enter through another hotel role and progress through company training. It lists progression to head housekeeper or accommodation-services manager. Course and apprenticeship availability can change, so check current local listings and employer requirements.

What training figures do—and do not—say

BLS data for 2025 report that on-the-job training was required for 97.8% of maids and housekeeping cleaners and 88.8% of workers in the broader building and grounds cleaning and maintenance group. Prior work experience was required for 23.7% of that broader group. These are occupational-group figures, not guarantees about an individual vacancy or a requirement in every country. BLS: Occupational Requirements

What should applicants know about safety and working conditions?

Cleaning and custodial tasks may involve heavy lifting, prolonged standing, bending, contact with body fluids or infectious agents, and handling cleaning agents. NIOSH identifies possible related hazards including musculoskeletal disorders, infectious diseases, skin conditions, allergies, and respiratory illness. These are potential occupational hazards, not inevitable outcomes. Safe practice depends on task-specific training, the product instructions, employer procedures, and applicable workplace rules.

Before accepting a role, ask what training is provided for equipment, chemicals, lifting, and reporting hazards; what shifts are expected; and which repairs workers are authorized to perform. Follow the employer’s instructions for protective equipment and product use rather than assuming one item or method is suitable for every task.

What do wages and job prospects look like?

For the United States, BLS reported a median wage of $17.71 per hour for janitors and building cleaners in May 2025. That figure is specific to this U.S. occupation and date; it is not a universal housekeeping wage. BLS projected 2% employment growth for janitors and building cleaners from 2025 to 2035, with about 321,800 openings per year on average over that period. Most openings are expected to result from workers leaving the occupation or the labor force, rather than employment growth. BLS: Janitors and Building Cleaners

These figures do not establish pay or prospects for hotel housekeepers, other countries, or a particular employer. Check local job postings and official labor-market information for the role and region you are considering.
