ESP32 Smart Plant Watering System: Automatic Irrigation That Actually Works

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An ESP32 automatic plant-watering system measures soil moisture, switches a low-voltage pump, and delivers a controlled dose of water through tubing. The dependable version is not just a moisture sensor and an app: it also needs calibration, hysteresis, a soak period, maximum runtime limits, reservoir protection, and a safe offline mode.

How an ESP32 irrigation system works

The basic architecture is:

Soil-moisture sensor → ESP32 ADC → MOSFET or relay → pump or valve → tubing → plant
↘ Wi-Fi, MQTT, or Home Assistant

The ESP32 periodically reads the sensor. When the calibrated reading indicates that the root zone is dry, it runs the pump for a short dose, waits for the water to spread through the soil, and measures again. Wi-Fi can provide graphs, alerts, manual control, MQTT, and OTA updates, but watering safety should remain local to the ESP32.

This system can detect dry soil, water automatically, record moisture trends, alert you to an empty reservoir, and support different settings for different plants. A single probe cannot determine root health, drainage problems, disease, heat stress, or the exact volume a plant needs. It also cannot prove that water reached every part of a large pot without additional sensing or testing.

Parts required

Minimum build

  • ESP32 development board with a suitable ADC-capable input
  • Capacitive analog soil-moisture sensor
  • Low-voltage DC or peristaltic pump
  • Separate pump power supply
  • Logic-level N-channel MOSFET driver or compatible relay module
  • Flyback diode when using a bare inductive pump and transistor circuit
  • Reservoir, tubing, and a dripper or outlet
  • USB power for the ESP32
  • Waterproof enclosure or splash protection

Recommended for unattended operation

  • Reservoir-level sensor or low-water switch
  • Flow sensor or pump-current monitoring
  • Manual-off switch and status LED
  • Check valve to prevent backflow or siphoning
  • Separate pump fuse or current-limited supply
  • Leak tray and secondary containment
  • Nonvolatile storage for calibration and watering history

For several plants, use individually sensed and controlled zones: one pump per plant, separate solenoid valves, or independently controlled peristaltic pumps. One sensor and one pump should not represent plants with different moisture requirements.

Choose the sensor carefully

A capacitive sensor is generally the better long-term choice because it avoids exposed conductive electrodes and therefore reduces the corrosion problems common with resistive probes. It is not corrosion-proof: coatings, wiring, electronics, fertilizer salts, and moisture can still cause failures. A resistive sensor is inexpensive and useful for demonstrations, but its electrodes can oxidize or collect deposits. Adafruit describes its low-cost sensor as resistive.

Sensor readings vary with soil mix, fertilizer, temperature, probe depth, pot geometry, root density, orientation, and supply voltage. A displayed “percentage” is normally a calibrated relative index, not a universal percentage of soil water content. Raw ADC counts, sensor voltage, relative moisture, and volumetric water content are different measurements.

ESP32 ADC behavior also varies by chip, board, attenuation, and input range. Consult the documentation for your exact board and chip; Espressif documents ADC error and attenuation-dependent calibration in the ESP32 datasheet. Do not copy GPIO numbers from another ESP32 variant without checking its pinout and restrictions.

  • 【📄What’s In The Box】‌1* Auto Watering Pump, 1*32.81ft Long 1/6 inch Tubing, 10*T Barb Fitting, 10*Adjustable Drip Emitter, 10*Support Stake, 1*T Cross Barb Fitting, 1*Anti-Siphon Valve, 1*Filter, 3*Tubing End Plug.

Select the pump and driver

A small submersible pump suits a nearby reservoir. A peristaltic pump is often preferable for measured dosing because it is typically self-priming and helps limit backflow, although it can be noisier and more expensive. Check operating voltage, startup current, lift height, intermittent-duty rating, flow rate, priming, tubing size, and clog resistance.

Measure actual delivery at the final tubing length and height. Advertised pump flow is not the volume that will necessarily reach the pot. Run the pump into a measuring container for a known time, then use that result to set dose limits.

Never power a pump directly from an ESP32 GPIO. The GPIO should control a properly rated driver. A DC pump normally uses a logic-level MOSFET, separate pump supply, common ground, and flyback suppression. A relay module can be easier for beginners, but its input must recognize 3.3-V logic and its contacts must handle the pump’s voltage and startup current.

Safe wiring concept

Sensor VCC → sensor-rated 3.3-V supply
Sensor GND → ESP32 GND
Sensor analog → a verified ADC-capable ESP32 pin

Pump supply + → pump +
Pump − → MOSFET drain or driver output
MOSFET source → pump-supply GND
ESP32 GPIO → MOSFET gate or relay input
ESP32 GND → pump-supply GND

This is a conceptual diagram, not a universal pinout. Use the schematic for the exact ESP32 board, sensor, driver, and pump. Keep motor wiring away from analog sensor wiring. Pump noise can corrupt readings or reset the board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not exceed the ADC input’s permitted voltage.
  • Use separate regulated supplies when the pump could overload the ESP32 regulator or USB source.
  • Protect electronics from splashes and condensation.
  • Use a fuse or current-limited supply where appropriate.
  • Do not place unprotected batteries or chargers beside a leak-prone reservoir.
  • Avoid mains-voltage switching in a beginner installation.

Calibrate the sensor in the actual pot

  1. Install the probe at its permanent depth and location.
  2. Record several readings when the soil reaches the dryness at which watering should begin.
  3. Water the plant normally, allowing excess water to drain.
  4. Wait for the water to distribute through the pot, then record readings at the adequately hydrated condition.
  5. Repeat the dry and wet observations several times.
  6. Set a dry threshold and a separate wet threshold between the observed ranges.
  7. Recalibrate if the pot, soil mix, probe position, or plant changes.

Keep the probe in the root zone, not at the surface, beside the dripper, against the pot wall, or in an unusually fast- or slow-drying pocket. In a large or uneven pot, one probe may be insufficient.

Control logic that will not run away

Use hysteresis: a dry threshold starts a possible watering event, while a higher wet threshold ends the watering state. Add a soak period so the system does not keep dosing before water reaches the sensor.

Every measurement interval:
  Read and validate moisture
If reservoir is empty or sensor is invalid: pump OFF and alarm
If cooldown, hourly limit, or daily limit applies: pump OFF
If moisture is below the dry threshold:
      Run one short, measured dose
      Stop the pump
Wait for the experimentally determined soak time
      Measure again
Keep all remote commands behind a local maximum-on timer

Essential protections include:

  • Maximum pump runtime per cycle
  • Maximum doses per hour and per day
  • Minimum interval between watering events
  • Reservoir-empty lockout
  • Disconnected or out-of-range sensor detection
  • Pump-off behavior during boot and restart
  • Manual emergency stop
  • Watchdog and safe recovery behavior
  • Alert when the pump runs but moisture does not change

There is no universal watering time. The correct dose depends on pump output, tubing, pot size, soil, drainage, dripper position, and plant type.

Arduino, ESPHome, or ESP-IDF?

Option Best for Trade-off
Arduino framework Beginners and self-contained sketches Fast to prototype, but you maintain networking, storage, and safety logic
ESPHome with Home Assistant Dashboards, alerts, OTA, and existing smart homes Rapid integration, but local pump limits must still be enforced
ESP-IDF Production-oriented firmware and precise power management Most control, but the steepest learning curve

Espressif identifies ESP-IDF as its official development framework for ESP32-family targets. Arduino is usually the quickest route for a first custom build. ESPHome is convenient for Home Assistant users, but Home Assistant does not replace local runtime and fault protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An official M5Stack ESPHome example uses GPIO32 for analog input and GPIO26 for pump control on that particular hardware. Those pins must not be assumed to work on another ESP32 board.

Wi-Fi, battery, and solar operation

Wi-Fi adds remote status, historical graphs, alerts, manual watering, MQTT, and OTA updates. The pump should nevertheless behave safely when Wi-Fi, MQTT, Home Assistant, NTP, or the router is unavailable. Never allow a retained MQTT “ON” command to run indefinitely.

Battery operation is possible, but the pump usually dominates energy use. Deep sleep helps only when the device measures, transmits, and sleeps rather than keeping Wi-Fi active. Power the sensor down between readings where possible, monitor battery voltage, and account for Wi-Fi startup, pump inrush, regulator losses, temperature, and solar availability. The Plantwatery project demonstrates an ESP32 design using capacitive sensing, pumping, Wi-Fi/MQTT, solar power, and deep sleep; it does not establish a universal battery-life estimate.

Test the complete installation

  1. Read the sensor with the pump disconnected.
  2. Confirm whether wetter soil raises or lowers the reading.
  3. Test the driver without water and verify that the default state is OFF.
  4. Measure real pump output at the final lift and tubing length.
  5. Inspect every fitting for leaks and siphoning.
  6. Test the empty-reservoir lockout.
  7. Disconnect the sensor and confirm an alarm with the pump OFF.
  8. Disable Wi-Fi and verify safe local behavior.
  9. Restart power and confirm the pump stays OFF until valid conditions exist.
  10. Supervise the system for several watering cycles before leaving it unattended.

Common failures

The ESP32 resets when the pump starts.
The pump may be causing a voltage drop or electrical noise. Separate supplies, improve grounding, add suppression, and verify startup current.
The moisture reading is backwards.
Confirm the sensor’s wet and dry behavior, then reverse the normalization or threshold logic.
The pump runs continuously.
Check invalid-value handling, threshold inversion, boot defaults, maximum runtime, and remote commands.
The plant remains dry.
Check pump lift, priming, clogged tubing, leaks, dripper placement, compacted soil, drainage, and whether the probe is measuring a different area.
Water continues after shutdown.
Look for siphoning, incorrect tubing routing, or a missing check valve.
The sensor never changes.
Check power, analog pin selection, connector continuity, soil contact, sensor damage, and ADC voltage limits.
Home Assistant shows the device as unavailable.
Keep watering logic local, then troubleshoot Wi-Fi credentials, signal, broker availability, and device power separately.

When ESP32 is not the best choice

For one indoor plant where remote monitoring is unnecessary, a mechanical timer, self-watering planter, or commercial watering device may be simpler and less likely to fail. A non-Wi-Fi controller is also a good choice when privacy, network independence, and basic scheduled watering matter more than dashboards.
