English ivy (Hedera helix) is easiest to manage indoors in bright, indirect or low light, evenly moist but well-drained compost, and a pot with drainage holes. Outdoors it is a vigorous evergreen climber that can cover structures quickly and may be invasive, so check local regulations before planting. Keep all parts—especially leaves and berries—away from children and pets because the plant is toxic when eaten.

Identify English ivy

English ivy, Hedera helix, is an evergreen climbing shrub in the Araliaceae family. Its stems can trail from hanging containers, climb a support, cover ground, or grow over walls and fences. It performs best in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil but tolerates a broad range of conditions.

Choose the right form and location

Use or trait What to choose Key consideration
Indoor shelf or hanging basket Compact trailing cultivar; variegated forms suit brighter rooms Use indirect light and a freely draining container
Low-light room Plain green foliage Green forms generally tolerate deeper shade than variegated forms
Hoop, trellis or frame Juvenile growth Maintains the familiar climbing or trailing habit
Outdoor wall, fence or ground cover Vigorous green form only where legal and controllable Growth can become heavy and spread beyond the planting area
Homes with cats, dogs or horses No exposed ivy, or a different non-toxic plant ASPCA lists English ivy as toxic to dogs, cats and horses

Indoor English ivy care

Light

Place ivy in low or indirect light. Plain green plants cope with less light; variegated plants hold their pattern better in brighter indirect light. Keep foliage out of direct sun through glass, which can scorch leaves. Turn the pot periodically so growth remains even.

Pot and compost

Use a peat-free multipurpose or loam-based compost in a container with an unobstructed drainage hole. A saucer can catch excess water, but empty it rather than allowing the pot to stand in water. Saturated compost fills the air spaces around roots and can cause decline.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the surface of the compost has begun to dry, then let excess drain away. The aim is consistently moist—not waterlogged—compost. Reduce the frequency in cooler, darker conditions and check the mix with a finger before watering rather than following a fixed calendar.

Feeding and humidity

If leaves turn yellow between the veins, the Royal Horticultural Society says the plant may need feeding. Apply a general-purpose liquid fertiliser at the label dilution when watering; do not compensate for poor drainage with extra fertiliser. Regularly spraying foliage can help discourage some pests, although good airflow and avoiding persistently wet compost remain important.

Pruning and training

Trim trailing stems to keep the plant compact, or guide them around a hoop or frame. Remove damaged or overcrowded growth with clean snips. Pruning also makes it easier to inspect stems and leaf undersides for pests.

Outdoor growing and containment

Site and soil

Ivy tolerates challenging shade and dry conditions, but vigorous growth is the trade-off. Give it well-drained, fertile soil and a support that can carry mature stems. On a building or tree, inspect attachment points regularly and prune before the vine becomes heavy.

How fast can it spread?

The Royal Horticultural Society reports that one plant can cover several standard fence panels in a decade or reach the height of a two-storey house in 15–20 years if unmanaged. Adult climbing growth flowers and produces berries, which birds can disperse and carry beyond the original planting.

Invasive-plant precautions

Virginia Cooperative Extension reports NatureServe’s 2024 assessment as a high/medium overall invasive rank with medium ecological impact. Before planting outdoors, check your state, province or municipality’s invasive-plant lists and any containment rules. Keep vines out of natural areas, remove flowering or fruiting growth where local guidance recommends it, and do not compost seed-bearing material if authorities advise against that practice.

Propagate English ivy from cuttings

The Royal Horticultural Society recommends semi-hardwood cuttings in summer. The type of stem you select affects the eventual habit: cuttings from adult growth produce shrubby, non-climbing plants, while juvenile growth preserves the climbing or trailing form.

  1. Choose healthy, non-flowering semi-hardwood growth and use clean, sharp tools.
  2. Cut a section that includes at least one node—the point where a leaf joins the stem.
  3. Remove the lower leaves, leaving foliage at the tip.
  4. Insert the cutting into a clean, lightly moist rooting medium, or place it in water until roots form.
  5. Keep the medium lightly moist and out of harsh direct sun. Rooting speed varies with local temperature, light and humidity.
  6. When roots are established, pot the cutting into freely draining compost and acclimate it gradually to its final light level.

Wear gloves while taking cuttings because sap can irritate sensitive skin.

Toxicity and safe handling

ASPCA lists English ivy as toxic to dogs, cats and horses. The Royal Horticultural Society classifies it as harmful if eaten and identifies it as a skin irritant or allergen for sensitive people. Keep leaves, stems and berries out of reach of children and animals; hanging baskets are not safe if a pet can reach trailing growth.

Troubleshoot common problems

Yellow leaves

Check whether the compost stays saturated; poor aeration from waterlogging is a common cause of decline. If yellowing occurs between the veins despite sound drainage, apply a general-purpose liquid fertiliser at the label rate.

Scorched or bleached leaves

Move the plant away from direct sunlight through a window. Bright indirect light is safer, particularly for variegated foliage.

Long, sparse stems

Increase indirect light and prune back stretched growth. Green ivy tolerates low light, but very dim conditions can still produce weak, widely spaced growth.

Pests

Inspect leaf undersides and stems. Regularly spraying foliage may discourage some pests; isolate a troubled plant and improve airflow while you identify and treat the problem with a product approved for your location.

Outdoor growth becoming unmanageable

Cut stems back before they flower, fruit or become heavy. Remove prunings from the site and check nearby trees, fences and ground for re-rooting pieces. If local rules prohibit the plant, arrange disposal according to municipal invasive-plant guidance rather than sharing cuttings.

Practical decision guide

  • Choose indoor ivy when you want a trailing or trained foliage plant and can provide drainage plus indirect light.
  • Choose a green form for darker rooms; choose a variegated form when you can provide brighter indirect light.
  • Choose outdoor ivy only after checking local status and confirming that you can prune, contain and dispose of growth responsibly.
  • Choose another plant if cats, dogs or horses can reach the foliage or berries.
