The work is planned for October 2026; buses will replace trains on 17 and 18 October, and Snelland level crossing will close from the evening of 16 October until the morning of 19 October.
What work is happening near Snelland?
Network Rail’s 6 October 2026 announcement describes a £1.5 million project to replace life-expired track components on nearly 1.2km of railway near Snelland. The stated aim is to reduce maintenance needs and lower the chance of a temporary speed restriction being needed in future, helping provide smoother, more reliable journeys between Lincoln and Cleethorpes. These are the project’s intended benefits, not measured results: Network Rail has not announced a reliability percentage or post-work outcome.
The published plan says engineers will use nine engineering trains, road-rail vehicles and other specialist equipment. The announcement does not specify which individual components will be replaced, their quantities or technical specifications, nor does it set out the detailed work sequence or name contractors. Network Rail’s project announcement does not report the final cost or confirm that the work is complete.
When will trains be replaced by buses?
Under the announced plan, buses will replace trains between Cleethorpes and Lincoln/Barton-on-Humber on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2026. The notice is advance travel information, so check East Midlands Railway or National Rail for current arrangements before travelling.

Network Rail’s figures for this project are its announced £1.5 million investment, nearly 1.2km of track and nine engineering trains. Its explanation of the expected reliability benefit is that replacing life-expired components should reduce maintenance and the likelihood of future temporary speed restrictions. The announcement does not quantify that effect.

- Woodland Scenics' Tidy Track Rail Tracker Cleaning Kit
Network Rail describes a separate High Output renewal approach using ballast-cleaning and track-renewal trains in a conveyor process, supported by machines such as tampers or dynamic track stabilisers. It says those teams can renew rails and sleepers over roughly 1.2km of plain line in a night. That is general information about one Network Rail method; the Snelland announcement does not say the project will use the High Output system, so its equipment and capacity should not be assumed for this work. Network Rail’s High Output overview provides that general context.
