Empire Heater Troubleshooting: Safe Checks by Symptom and Model

Empire heater troubleshooting starts with the exact model and ignition type. Learn safe, symptom-specific checks for a pilot that will not stay lit, no spark, no heat, and repeated shutdowns.

If an Empire heater will not light, its pilot will not stay lit, or it produces no heat, start with the exact model number and ignition type—not a generic reset. Empire’s troubleshooting guidance separates millivolt standing-pilot heaters from electronic-ignition models, and instructions and clearances vary by model. If you smell gas, stop troubleshooting and follow the emergency steps below.

Identify the heater before troubleshooting

Find the heater’s nameplate and note the full model number, gas type, and ignition system. Use the operating or installation manual for that specific unit. Empire’s support guidance distinguishes millivolt standing-pilot appliances from electronic-ignition models; electronic ignition has its own operating guide. The symptom paths below that refer to the BF-10/20/30 apply to that unvented heater family, not every Empire heater. Its cited manual carries document footer 16943-7-0907 (2007); check Empire for a current revision before relying on it.

Owner checks should stay within the manual’s operating instructions. Do not bypass a safety control or open gas valves, adjust gas pressure, or diagnose internal wiring unless the manual explicitly permits the task. If your model’s instructions do not match the symptom, stop and seek help rather than applying another model’s procedure.

Safety first: what to do if you smell gas

Stop troubleshooting. Empire’s DVC202628IN371KNP installation instructions say, “Do not try to light any appliance.” Do not touch electrical switches or use a phone inside the building. Leave and call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone, then follow its instructions. If you cannot reach the supplier, call the fire department. See the Empire direct-vent manual for the complete warning.

Quick reference: match the symptom to the right path

Symptom Model-specific possibilities Safe next step
Pilot light will not stay lit On BF-10/20/30, hold time or knob depression, pilot flame contact with the thermocouple, inlet pressure, thermocouple, or gas control. Follow the exact lighting instructions; use the gas supplier for a pressure concern and qualified service for component diagnosis.
No heat output despite pilot being lit Millivolt models: insufficient thermopile signal or incomplete thermostat circuit. BF-10/20/30: blocked main burner orifice or low inlet gas pressure. Confirm only user-operable thermostat settings per the model manual. Leave internal electrical, valve, and pressure diagnosis to qualified help.
Spark electrode produces spark but pilot does not light BF-10/20/30: no gas to the heater, control knob not aligned with PILOT, or a blocked pilot. Check the manual’s knob position and approved operating steps. Do not probe or dismantle the pilot.
Main burner does not ignite Causes depend on model and ignition system; the BF-10/20/30 manual lists a blocked burner orifice or low inlet pressure when the pilot is lit. Use the exact manual; request service for a suspected obstruction or gas-pressure fault.
Heater keeps shutting ‘OFF’ during normal operation Empire support associates repeated cycling on applicable models with possible overtemperature/high-limit activation. BF-10/20/30 lists a blocked pilot or low inlet pressure. Only where the model manual supports it, check that vents are unobstructed, the blower operates, and specified clearances are met.

These are possible causes listed in Empire materials, not confirmed diagnoses. The manufacturer support page and the BF-10/20/30 manual are the references for the model distinctions in this table.

“Pilot light will not stay lit”

For the BF-10/20/30, Empire’s manual lists several possibilities: the control knob was not held down long enough or fully depressed, the pilot flame does not surround the thermocouple, inlet gas pressure is low, or the thermocouple or gas control is defective. These causes can look alike from the outside, so a pilot that goes out is not by itself proof that a thermocouple needs replacement.

Use the manual’s lighting sequence and required hold time. If the flame does not contact the thermocouple as illustrated, or the pilot still goes out, stop and arrange qualified diagnosis. Empire’s manual directs readers to contact the gas supplier about low inlet pressure and describes pilot replacement for a defective thermocouple. Any replacement must match the precise model and gas type; do not assume a generic thermocouple or pilot assembly will fit.

“Spark electrode produces spark but pilot does not light”

On the BF-10/20/30, a visible spark narrows the possibilities but does not establish why the pilot is not lighting. The manual lists no gas to the heater, a control knob that is not correctly aligned with PILOT, or dirt or spider webs blocking the pilot.

Follow only the manual’s approved checks for gas supply and knob position. If the pilot appears blocked, do not insert tools or disassemble the assembly unless the model instructions expressly direct you to do so. A gas supply, pilot, or control fault requires appropriate service.

No spark at the electrode

If the BF-10/20/30 electrode does not spark, its manual lists a broken electrode, a disconnected or damaged ignitor wire, or a defective piezo ignitor. That is a different troubleshooting path from having a spark but no pilot flame.

Observe the lighting procedure and any visual check the manual permits. Leave wire, electrode, and ignitor repair to qualified service if the visible check does not resolve the issue; do not improvise a repair or bypass the ignition system.

“No heat output despite pilot being lit”

A standing pilot can remain lit while the main burner fails to receive the signal or gas flow it needs. Empire support cites an inadequate millivolt signal or incomplete thermostat circuit for some millivolt models. Separately, the BF-10/20/30 manual lists a blocked main burner orifice or low inlet gas pressure. These are distinct model-dependent possibilities, not universal explanations.

Check only thermostat settings and user controls identified in your own manual. Diagnosis involving the thermopile signal, thermostat wiring, gas valve, burner orifice, or inlet pressure should be left to qualified help. Do not use voltage ranges from general support material as specifications for an unidentified model.

“Main burner does not ignite”

First establish whether the heater has a standing pilot or electronic ignition and whether the pilot is actually lit, if the model uses one. For the BF-10/20/30, a lit pilot with no main burner can point to a blocked burner orifice or low inlet pressure. Empire’s broader millivolt guidance also identifies the thermopile signal and thermostat circuit as relevant on some models.

Because the same symptom can arise from different systems, use the model-specific manual rather than borrowing a fix from another Empire heater. Internal burner, wiring, valve, and pressure checks belong with a qualified service professional.

“Heater keeps shutting ‘OFF’ during normal operation”

On models where the design includes them, repeated cycling may be associated with an overtemperature or high-limit control. Empire support suggests checking that vents are unobstructed, the blower functions, and the clearances specified in the unit’s manual are maintained. Do not assume these checks apply to a model without those features.

The BF-10/20/30 manual separately lists a blocked pilot or low inlet gas pressure for shutdown during normal operation. If the heater continues to shut off after only the manual-approved checks, do not defeat a limit switch or repeatedly relight it; arrange service.

When to contact Empire or a service professional

Contact Empire technical support for help with parts identification, installation questions, or troubleshooting. The Empire support page provides the manufacturer’s support route. Have the model number, gas type, ignition system, and a concise description of what happens ready.

Use the gas supplier for a suspected supply-pressure issue. For gas pressure, a gas valve, internal wiring, blocked burner components, or uncertain part identification, use an appropriately qualified service professional. A model-compatible thermocouple or pilot assembly is a replacement path only after diagnosis and confirmation against the nameplate, gas type, and exact manual.
