An electrician typically installs and services electrical systems in buildings and other facilities; an electrical engineering technician typically helps engineers assemble, test, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical or electronic equipment. The routes differ too: electricians usually train through paid apprenticeships, while an associate degree is typical for the technician occupation. This comparison uses U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics categories; local licensing rules and employer job titles vary.

What is the difference between an electrician and an electrical technician?

“Electrical technician” can describe a range of jobs. For a clear U.S. comparison, the closest formal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) category is electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians. It is narrower than every job title that includes the words “electrical technician.” A posting with that title may not match the BLS category exactly, so read its duties rather than relying on the title alone.

The most useful distinction is the object and purpose of the work. Electricians primarily install, maintain, and repair electrical systems. Engineering technicians commonly support engineers by building, testing, maintaining, or troubleshooting equipment and prototypes. Both may diagnose problems or perform maintenance, and individual employers may use titles differently.

In practical terms, ask what the work is meant to accomplish. Is the worker installing or servicing an electrical system in a building or other facility? That points toward electrician work. Is the worker helping develop, evaluate, assemble, test, or maintain electrical or electronic equipment as part of engineering or production work? That is closer to the BLS engineering-technician category. These are typical distinctions, not a guarantee that duties never overlap.

The BLS summarizes electrician work as installing, maintaining, and repairing “electrical power, communications, lighting, and control systems.” Its summary for the technician category says these workers help engineers design and develop equipment powered by electricity or electric current. These are descriptions of occupational categories, not guarantees that every employer divides duties the same way. BLS: Electricians · BLS: Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technologists and Technicians

The comparison is not simply “field work versus office work.” Electricians generally do hands-on installation and service work, while technicians may move among office, lab, and factory environments and combine technical theory with assembly, testing, and production tasks. Either occupation can involve troubleshooting. The difference is the typical system or equipment involved and the purpose of the task.

What does an electrician do?

Electricians work on systems that deliver or control electrical power, lighting, communications, or related functions. Their work commonly centers on installation, maintenance, and repair in construction or service settings. The specific tasks depend on the job and facility; the BLS occupational profile describes the broad category rather than a single specialty or employer’s task list.

The work is oriented toward installed electrical systems: putting them in place, keeping them working, or repairing them when needed. This focus can matter when comparing an electrician role with a technician position that uses similar electrical knowledge but applies it to instruments, equipment, prototypes, or assemblies. A job may include a mixture of duties, so use the posting’s task list to understand the actual balance.

Because the role can involve work on installed electrical systems, local rules matter. Most states require electricians to hold a license, but requirements differ geographically. Completing an apprenticeship does not automatically mean a person may perform every kind of work independently: the relevant state or local licensing rules determine what credentials and permissions apply.

For that reason, someone considering electrician training should check requirements in the location where they intend to work, not assume that an apprenticeship certificate or a license from another jurisdiction settles every question. State and local licensing authorities determine the applicable licensing steps and permissions. Confirm the rules with the relevant state or local authority.

What does an electrical technician do?

In the BLS engineering-technician category, the work helps engineers develop and evaluate electrical and electronic equipment. A technician may assemble a prototype, build or repair an instrument, calibrate equipment, test an assembly, diagnose a malfunction, maintain a system, or document test results. Measuring and diagnostic devices are part of this work, though the tools and duties depend on the role.

  • Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure

These tasks can form a connected process. A technician might help assemble or repair equipment, use measuring or diagnostic devices to check its operation, investigate a malfunction, and record test results. Calibration and documentation are also part of the range described by the BLS profile. Not every technician performs every task, and the details depend on the employer and position.

A digital multimeter is one example of a measuring device that may be used in some technician tasks, but it is not a required purchase for every technician or a universal recommendation for electricians. The equipment used depends on the actual work. No particular model or safety rating is established by this comparison.

Unlike the electrician profile, the technician profile describes work across offices, laboratories, and factories. Some jobs emphasize testing or instrumentation; others involve assembly, production, maintenance, or troubleshooting. Check the employer’s actual job description rather than assuming the title alone identifies the work. In particular, look for whether the position supports engineering development, testing, production, equipment maintenance, or some combination.

Electrician apprenticeship vs. electrical engineering technology degree

Electrician: paid apprenticeship and technical instruction

The usual electrician route is an apprenticeship that combines paid work with technical instruction. Technical school may be an alternative or a starting point. Workers who complete an apprenticeship are considered journey workers, but the right to work independently remains subject to relevant licensing requirements in the jurisdiction.

The apprenticeship route is work-based as well as instructional: it pairs paid work with technical learning. That distinguishes it from the typical preparation for the BLS engineering-technician category, which is an associate degree. Apprenticeship programs and licensing authorities determine the applicable apprenticeship length, tuition amount, application process, and licensing exam, so prospective apprentices should verify those details with programs and authorities in their area.

Before choosing a program, check what it prepares you to do locally and how it relates to the license or credential required for your intended work. “Apprenticeship completed” and “licensed for independent work” are not interchangeable claims across all locations. Ask what status the program completion provides, what additional local requirements apply, and whether the program is recognized for the work you want to pursue.

Technician: associate degree is typical, but entry requirements vary

An associate degree is typical for electrical and electronic engineering technicians. Community colleges and vocational-technical schools offer programs in electrical or electronic engineering technology. BLS describes common coursework in algebra, programming, physics, and circuitry.

That coursework signals a different kind of preparation from the typical electrician apprenticeship: a technical college program builds foundational knowledge in subjects used to understand and work with electrical or electronic equipment. Individual schools set their curricula, program duration, tuition, and required courses. Compare individual program descriptions and local job postings instead of assuming all programs are identical.

Requirements are not identical across positions: some employers prefer a bachelor’s degree for particular work, while other positions may accept a high-school diploma. Certifications are available but optional in the BLS profile. Review specific postings and program outcomes to see which education level employers in your area request. An optional certification should not be confused with a universal licensing requirement.

Neither preparation route is the single right choice for everyone. Consider whether you prefer paid work-based learning and a path into system installation and service, or a technical degree route associated with equipment development, assembly, and testing. Also compare the actual entry requirements of local employers and the credentials that apply to the work you want to do.

Does an electrical technician need a license?

The BLS profile identifies state licensing as a common requirement for electricians; it does not establish one nationwide licensing rule for the broad phrase “electrical technician.” That difference does not mean every technician job is exempt from rules: requirements depend on the actual work and jurisdiction. Check with the relevant state or local licensing authority, and confirm whether the employer expects a specific credential. Do not infer that an electrician’s license is required—or that no license can apply—solely from the word “technician” in a job title.

The practical way to answer the question is to identify the duties, location, and employer requirements. A broad job title does not tell you whether a credential applies to a particular task. Likewise, the fact that the BLS technician profile does not establish a uniform nationwide license is not evidence that every technician role is unregulated. Confirm requirements for the specific position with the relevant authority and employer.

Pay and job outlook in the United States

The latest figures in the BLS profiles cited here use May 2025 for median annual pay and 2025–35 for projected employment change and annual openings. They describe national occupational categories, not entry-level offers or an individual’s likely earnings.

BLS occupation Median annual pay, May 2025 Projected employment growth, 2025–35 Average annual openings, 2025–35
Electricians $63,190 9% About 72,700
Electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians $78,190 2% About 8,100

The technician category has the higher national median in these figures, while the electrician category has stronger projected growth and more annual openings. Neither comparison predicts which path will pay more for a particular person. Earnings and opportunities can vary by location, specialty, experience, and employer. Use the BLS state and area data alongside current local job postings to assess the market where you plan to work. Figures are from the BLS electrician profile and the BLS technician profile.

Read each number in context. The median is a national midpoint for the occupation, not a starting salary or a promise of what a particular worker will earn. The growth figures compare projected employment over 2025–35; annual openings are a separate estimate of openings per year over that period. The electrician projection is 9% growth and about 72,700 openings a year, while the technician category is projected to grow 2% with about 8,100 openings a year. Those figures describe different occupational categories and should not be combined.

The higher technician median does not establish that a technician will earn more than an electrician in every region, specialty, or career stage. If pay is important to your decision, compare state and area wage data and current local postings for the specific roles you would consider. Note the requested experience and credentials as well as the listed pay; the national medians alone cannot answer what a new worker can expect locally.

How to choose between the career paths

Compare the day-to-day work and the training route—not just the job titles or national pay medians. These questions can help you narrow the choice:

  • Where do you want to work? Electricians generally do hands-on installation, maintenance, and repair in construction and service environments. Technician work may take place in an office, laboratory, or factory.
  • What do you want to work on? Consider whether you would rather install or service electrical systems, or help build, test, and troubleshoot equipment and prototypes.
  • Which learning route fits you? The electrician route usually pairs paid work with apprenticeship instruction. The technician route typically involves an associate degree and coursework such as circuitry, physics, algebra, and programming.
  • What rules apply where you live? Check licensing requirements for electrician work with the relevant authority. For technician roles, verify whether the specific duties or employer require a credential.
  • What does the local market show? Compare area-level wage and employment information with actual postings, including the experience and credentials employers request.

Think, too, about whether you are more interested in building or servicing systems or in testing and troubleshooting equipment. The distinction is not that one occupation has technical problem-solving and the other does not: both can involve maintenance and troubleshooting. It is the typical purpose of that work—service to an installed system versus support for equipment and engineering tasks—that helps separate the paths.

A useful comparison process is to collect a few local postings for each kind of role, then compare their duty lists, education or apprenticeship requirements, and credentials. For electrician positions, check the rules for the location and intended work. For technician positions, confirm whether the employer asks for an associate degree, a different education level, or an optional certification. Then compare location-specific wage and opening information rather than treating the national figures as a personal forecast.

Both occupations can offer advancement, but there is no single progression ladder established for every employer or jurisdiction. The credentials and next steps depend on the work, employer, and local rules, so look at the requirements for the roles you hope to pursue rather than assuming one universal sequence.

What to check in a job posting or training program

  • Read the duty list for the actual balance of installation, service, assembly, testing, calibration, or documentation.
  • Confirm the education, apprenticeship, experience, and credentials the employer or program requires.
  • For electrician work, establish which license applies to the work and location, and whether a completed apprenticeship satisfies only part of the requirement.
  • For technician training, compare coursework with the skills requested in local postings, including circuitry, testing, and relevant programming or physics.
  • Use location-specific pay and opening data; national medians are not an individual salary estimate.

Also check that the job title maps to the work you expect. “Electrical technician” is a broad phrase, while the BLS comparison here uses a specific engineering-technician category. A posting that emphasizes installing and servicing building electrical systems may differ substantially from one centered on assembling, calibrating, and testing equipment. Ask the employer to clarify the duties if the title and description do not make the distinction clear.

For a program, look beyond its name: verify the actual coursework, the kind of work it prepares students for, and how local employers describe relevant jobs. For an apprenticeship or technical school, ask the provider what completion means and what additional requirements may apply. Compare current program and employer information directly rather than relying on a national estimate of standard costs for either route.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an electrician and an electrical technician?

Electricians typically install, maintain, and repair electrical power, communications, lighting, and control systems. In the BLS engineering-technician category, technicians help engineers develop and evaluate electrical or electronic equipment through work such as assembly, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation. Some duties overlap, and employers may use titles differently.

Is an electrical technician the same as an electrical engineering technician?

Not necessarily. “Electrical technician” is a broad job-title phrase. This comparison uses the narrower BLS category “Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technologists and Technicians,” so check the duties in a specific posting rather than assuming every job with “electrical technician” in its title matches that category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an electrical technician need a license?

The BLS profile identifies licensing as a common requirement for electricians but does not establish one nationwide license rule for the broad term “electrical technician.” Requirements can depend on the work and jurisdiction. Confirm them with the relevant state or local authority and the employer; do not infer the answer from the title alone.

Is an electrician apprenticeship or an electrical engineering technology degree the usual route?

An apprenticeship combining paid work and technical instruction is the usual electrician route, although technical school may be an alternative or starting point. An associate degree is typical for the BLS electrical and electronic engineering technician category, with common coursework including algebra, programming, physics, and circuitry. Position requirements vary.

Which career pays more: electrician or electrical technician?

In the cited BLS figures, the May 2025 national median was $63,190 for electricians and $78,190 for electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians. These occupational medians are not entry-level offers or personal forecasts. Pay can vary by area, experience, specialty, and employer, so compare local data and postings.

Which occupation has stronger projected growth and more openings?

For 2025–35, BLS projects 9% employment growth and about 72,700 annual openings for electricians, compared with 2% growth and about 8,100 annual openings for electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians. These are national projections for distinct categories, not guarantees of an individual job.

The Bottom Line

Choose based on the work you want to do and the preparation and rules that apply where you plan to work. Electricians generally install and service electrical systems and usually enter through a paid apprenticeship; engineering technicians typically support equipment development, testing, and maintenance and commonly prepare through an associate degree. Compare local licensing requirements, job postings, and wage data before deciding—national medians and broad job titles do not tell the whole story.
