Electric wallpaper is a real direct-electric heating technology, but it does not stop a poorly insulated home losing heat. It may improve comfort in selected rooms by warming a wall or ceiling and allowing targeted heating. However, as whole-home heating it can use substantial electricity, and there is not yet enough independent long-term evidence to show that it is cheaper than other electric heaters, gas heating or a properly designed heat pump.
For most cold, draughty homes, the sensible order is to assess the building fabric first, then compare heating systems on total installed cost, annual energy use, hot-water provision, controls and repairability.

What is electric wallpaper?
Electric wallpaper is a thin electrically heated membrane or sheet installed on a wall or ceiling, then covered with an approved finish such as paint or plaster. Products may be marketed as graphene wallpaper, carbon heating wallpaper or infrared wallpaper.

- Electric heating wallpaper contains a powered heating element and must be connected to the home’s electrical system.
- Infrared wallpaper is usually another name for an electric heated surface, although claims about what qualifies as “infrared heating” vary between manufacturers and technical sources.
- Thermal wallpaper or insulating lining paper is passive. It may slightly improve the feel of a cold wall but does not generate heat.
The Energy Saving Trust describes electric wallpaper as a thin sheet containing an electric heating element that can be installed on walls or ceilings. Elements commonly use carbon, copper or graphene-based materials. A typical stated surface temperature is around 40–45°C, although the exact temperature, output and electrical design depend on the product.

How does it heat a room?
Electricity warms the embedded element. The resulting heat reaches the room through a combination of:
- Radiation: people and surfaces within view of the heated area can absorb radiant heat.
- Convection: air next to the warm surface heats up and circulates.
- Conduction: heat moves into adjacent layers of the wall, ceiling and finish.
This can feel different from a conventional radiator. Someone sitting near a warmed surface may feel comfortable before the whole room’s air temperature has risen significantly. That is a comfort benefit, not a way around heat-loss physics. Heat can still escape through walls, roofs, floors, windows, doors, ventilation paths and draughts.
Why is it being tested in older homes?
Electric wallpaper is attracting interest because it is thin, quiet and potentially easier to zone than a wet central-heating system. It could heat one living room or bedroom without installing radiators and pipework throughout a property.
A University of Glasgow and University of Strathclyde project tested electric wallpaper in older Glasgow tenements, including homes occupied by households vulnerable to high heat loss and fuel poverty. The project aimed to monitor heating levels, heat retention, energy consumption and residents’ experiences. The University of Glasgow and University of Strathclyde describe the project and its monitoring objectives.
A later Glasgow City Council programme summary reported testing in pre-1919 tenements during 2024–25 and said conclusive affordability data had not yet been documented. A final report was anticipated during the 2025–26 financial year. The existence of these pilots demonstrates that the technology is being investigated; it does not prove that it is the cheapest or most effective solution.
A separate VIVO Defence Services trial in military housing has also promoted electric wallpaper as a possible way to reduce heating costs and damp-related problems. That is a monitored trial, not proof that the system prevents mould or delivers the same result in every building.
Can it make a poorly insulated home feel warmer?
Yes, potentially—but improving comfort is not the same as reducing heat loss.

- only one or two rooms are regularly occupied;
- the occupant sits near the heated wall or ceiling;
- the household can heat selected zones instead of the entire home;
- radiators would occupy valuable wall space;
- installing pipework would cause major disruption; or
- the system is combined with improvements to insulation, draught-proofing and ventilation.
A cold wall can make a room feel uncomfortable even when the air temperature appears reasonable. Raising the temperature of a selected surface may improve perceived warmth. But the building still needs the same amount of heat to maintain a given whole-home temperature unless its heat losses or heating habits change.
Why poor insulation can make it expensive
A poorly insulated home needs more heat regardless of whether that heat comes from electric wallpaper, panel heaters, radiators or a heat pump. Electric wallpaper can therefore perform poorly as a whole-home solution in a high-heat-loss property.

Potential problems include:
- heat escaping through external walls, roofs, floors, windows and doors;
- cold bridges and damp masonry reducing comfort;
- the heated membrane being installed on an external wall where some energy is conducted into the building fabric;
- insufficient output during very cold weather;
- the system running for long periods;
- occupants heating more rooms because the system is comfortable to use; and
- high electricity prices increasing the running cost.
The UK government’s infrared-heating review identifies insulation, system design, controls, installation quality and user behaviour as important factors. Its evidence review does not establish a universal performance advantage for infrared systems. It suggests that direct electric heating can be more plausible in very well-insulated homes—an important qualification to claims that it is especially suitable for poorly insulated properties.
Is it more efficient than an electric heater?
Not automatically. Direct electric resistance heating converts nearly all the electricity supplied to the element into heat at the point of use. Electric wallpaper should therefore not be described as “three times more efficient” than a conventional electric heater without explaining the comparison.

- heating fewer rooms;
- lower air-temperature settings;
- shorter heating periods;
- better room-by-room controls; or
- more direct heating of occupants and surfaces.
Those are benefits of zoning, control and comfort—not evidence that the element converts electricity into heat more efficiently than another resistance heater.
A council record attributes a “three times more efficient than a gas boiler” claim to NexGen. This is a vendor-associated claim whose comparison basis is unclear; it should not be treated as an independent whole-home result. The DESNZ evidence report is a better guide to the current uncertainty around infrared-heating claims.
What might it cost to run?
Actual cost depends on heat loss, floor area, thermostat settings, occupancy, electricity tariff, controls and the amount of wallpaper installed. Wattage alone is not an annual cost estimate.
For context, the Energy Saving Trust’s March 2026 assessment used direct electric heating as a proxy and modelled approximately £2,700 per year for space heating in a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house, compared with approximately £680 for gas heating. Its model used electricity at 25.9p/kWh and gas at 6.3p/kWh. These are illustrative figures, exclude hot water and are not a product-specific field measurement or a prediction for every home.
Electricity generated by solar panels or purchased through a suitable time-of-use tariff may alter the calculation, but neither changes the building’s underlying heat demand. A fair comparison should use the same property, weather conditions, indoor temperatures, hot-water requirements and occupancy pattern.
Electric wallpaper versus a heat pump
A heat pump moves heat from outside rather than producing all of it directly from electricity. Under suitable operating conditions, it can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity consumed. Direct electric heating has an effective coefficient of performance close to one.

| Consideration | Electric wallpaper | Heat pump |
|---|---|---|
| Heat delivery | Direct electric heat from a wall or ceiling surface | Transferred heat delivered through radiators, underfloor heating or indoor air units |
| Running-cost direction | Usually higher electricity use for the same delivered heat | Potentially lower electricity use, subject to design and operating conditions |
| Installation | Thin and potentially low-disruption, but requires electrical connection and approved finishing | More design work; may require outdoor equipment, pipework, emitters and electrical upgrades |
| Hot water | No | Some systems can provide domestic hot water |
| Best potential use | Selected-room or supplementary heating | Whole-home heating where the property and budget are suitable |
| Repairability | Potentially difficult if covered by plaster or paint | Components are generally accessible, though repairs can be technically complex |
The UK Heat and Buildings Strategy states that replacing inefficient direct electric heating with a heat pump could reduce heating bills by more than 50% in a sufficiently efficient off-gas-grid home. That is a policy example, not a guaranteed saving for every property.
Other alternatives to consider
Insulation and draught-proofing
Fabric improvements are usually the first comparison because they reduce the heat required from any heating system. Possible measures include loft insulation, suitable cavity-wall insulation, internal or external wall insulation, floor insulation, window improvements and air sealing.
Older buildings need a careful moisture and ventilation assessment. Insulation should not be added blindly to walls affected by penetrating damp, rising damp, poor detailing or severe thermal bridging.
Electric panel heaters
Panel heaters are visible but usually easier to replace, inspect and reposition than an embedded membrane. They offer similar direct-electric conversion efficiency and can provide room-by-room control without concealing the heating element.
Storage heaters
Storage heaters may be useful where off-peak electricity is available and the building can accommodate them. They can have lower tariff costs but are less responsive and less visually minimal.
Air-to-air heat pumps
Air-to-air heat pumps can provide efficient heating and cooling, often with less pipework than a wet system. They still require indoor units, outdoor equipment and a different comfort pattern. A 2026 DESNZ study examined their suitability across UK housing types and scenarios.
Infrared panels
Visible infrared panels provide a more accessible alternative to embedded wallpaper. They may be easier to inspect, replace and reposition, but occupy wall or ceiling space. Compare measured output, controls, surface temperature, warranty and installed cost rather than relying on the “infrared” label.
Does electric wallpaper provide hot water?
No. It is a space-heating system only. A home replacing a boiler would still need a separate hot-water arrangement, such as an immersion-heated cylinder or another suitable system. Hot-water equipment, controls, installation and running costs must be included in any whole-home comparison.

A warmer internal surface may reduce surface condensation in some circumstances, but electric wallpaper cannot repair rain penetration, rising damp, plumbing leaks, structural defects, inadequate ventilation, severe cold bridging or water ingress behind the system. Damp should be diagnosed and repaired before a concealed heating membrane is installed.
What does installation involve?
A responsible installation should include:
- A heat-loss, electrical and moisture assessment.
- Selection of suitable walls or ceilings and confirmation of the available surface area.
- Checks on the substrate, insulation, moisture condition and furniture layout.
- Installation of the membrane or panels in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Connection to the electrical supply by a qualified electrician.
- Installation and testing of thermostats, timers, room controls or app controls.
- Application of only an approved paint, plaster or other finish.
- Electrical-safety testing, commissioning and handover documentation.
Not every product is suitable for self-installation. Confirm the product’s certification, electrical specifications, output per square metre, circuit requirements and local installation rules. Record the location of the elements before they are covered, and make sure occupants know where drilling or fixing is prohibited.
What happens if the system fails?
A freestanding heater can normally be replaced without disturbing the wall. An embedded membrane may be harder to inspect and repair, particularly if it has been plastered over.
Potential failure points include damaged elements, thermostat or control faults, electrical connection problems, inadequate circuit capacity, moisture in the substrate, incompatible finishes and accidental drilling. Furniture or wall coverings may also reduce the intended heating effect.

When might electric wallpaper make sense?
It may be worth investigating when:
- the main requirement is one or two occupied rooms;
- radiators would consume valuable wall space;
- the building is difficult to pipe;
- a quiet, minimally visible system is important;
- the installation can be combined with fabric repairs and electrical upgrades;
- low-cost electricity or on-site solar is available;
- the property is off the gas grid and a heat pump is impractical; or
- the owner has independent performance data from a comparable property.
It is a poor fit where the property has severe heat loss, electricity is expensive, the system would run continuously, hot water also needs replacing, the walls are damp or likely to be drilled into, or the installer cannot provide clear certification, warranty and repair arrangements.
A practical decision checklist
- Assess the fabric first. Check insulation, draughts, windows, ventilation, damp and cold bridges.
- Define the heating requirement. Is the aim to warm one room, several rooms or the entire home?
- Calculate heat loss. Do not size the system from floor area or marketing wattage alone.
- Compare delivered heat. Obtain annual cost estimates for electric wallpaper, panel heaters, heat pumps and other realistic alternatives.
- Include hot water. A wallpaper system cannot replace a boiler’s hot-water function.
- Check controls. Confirm room zoning, timers, thermostats and compatibility with the household’s routine.
- Protect future repair access. Obtain an installation drawing and prohibit unplanned drilling through heated areas.
- Verify the installer. Request electrical certification, product documentation, warranty terms and maintenance procedures.
- Be cautious with claims. Ask what “efficient”, “low carbon” or “three times better” means, and what system was used as the baseline.
What the evidence still does not show
Independent, long-duration evidence in occupied, poorly insulated homes remains limited. The most useful future comparisons would combine weather-normalised energy use, actual bills, indoor temperature, occupant comfort, control behaviour, maintenance, repair costs and hot-water requirements.
Pilots in Glasgow and military housing are valuable because they test the technology in real buildings. They should not be treated as proof that electric wallpaper is universally affordable, prevents mould or outperforms heat pumps.

Final verdict
Electric wallpaper could help occupants feel warmer in selected rooms during winter, particularly where discreet, low-disruption and zoned heating is valuable. It is a credible direct-electric heating technology—not a miracle material.
It does not insulate a building, reduce fundamental heat loss or automatically cost less than another electric heater. In a poorly insulated home, the best long-term approach is usually to address the fabric first and then compare heating systems using whole-home heat demand, electricity prices, hot water, installation, controls and repairability. Electric wallpaper is most defensible as a targeted or supplementary comfort system, not as a proven replacement for insulation or efficient whole-home heating.
