Electric vs. Propane Patio Heaters: Which Is Right for You?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose propane when you have a genuinely open patio, need portable heat over a broad seating area, and do not want to depend on a nearby electrical connection. Choose electric infrared when you can provide the model’s required electrical supply and want focused warmth at a table, doorway, or seating zone. Neither fuel is universally better: the right choice depends on approved placement, heat pattern, weather exposure, fuel logistics, and local rules.

Check the heater’s current label and manual before buying or installing it. Output ratings are nameplate figures, not guarantees of a specific temperature or radius, and clearance, ventilation, electrical, and mounting requirements vary by model.

Electric and propane at a glance

The two technologies deliver heat differently. A propane patio heater burns fuel and radiates heat from a hot emitter while also warming some surrounding air. An electric infrared heater converts electricity into infrared radiation that warms people and objects in its line of sight. That distinction matters more than the headline BTU or watt number when you are deciding where the heater will work.

Decision factor Propane patio heater Electric infrared patio heater
Best fit Open patios, movable seating, and locations without a convenient electrical connection Targeted warmth where a suitable outlet or fixed circuit and approved mounting point are available
Heat pattern Usually broad radiant warmth around the unit; wind and layout change the useful area Directional infrared warmth; strongest in the beam and weaker outside its line of sight
Connection Compatible propane cylinder, hose, regulator, and controls Model-rated outlet, circuit, plug, or permanent wiring
Mobility Often portable, subject to cylinder weight and stability requirements Portable models exist, but many units are mounted and require a fixed location
Ventilation Outdoor fresh-air ventilation is essential because combustion produces exhaust No on-site combustion, but the unit still needs its specified outdoor rating, clearances, and electrical protection
Running cost Depends on local propane price, cylinder size, burner setting, and runtime Depends on the electricity tariff, wattage, setting, and runtime

This table describes tendencies, not guarantees. A particular electric unit may need a dedicated circuit, and a particular propane unit may have a narrower or wider effective comfort area than another model.

What the ratings really tell you

Propane BTU/h is fuel input, not a coverage promise

The Mi-T-M MH-0040-PM10 manual lists 40,000 BTU/h and requires a 20-pound cylinder. The Patio Comfort PC-02 manual also lists 40,000 BTU/h and describes an approximate 10-foot ring of warmth. Patio Comfort qualifies that description: wind, temperature, humidity, altitude, prevailing wind, and the heater’s location all change coverage. A 40,000 BTU/h label therefore cannot be converted into a guaranteed circle of comfortable temperature.

BTU/h describes the rate at which the appliance consumes fuel or produces heat under its rated conditions. It does not tell you how much reaches each chair. Reflectors, emitter design, mounting height, wind, clothing, and obstructions determine the experience. Two heaters with the same rating can feel different at the same distance.

Electric watts describe electrical load

Electric heaters are commonly labeled in watts. A 1,500-watt electric example and a 46,000-BTU propane example appear in a 2026 comparison guide, but those figures are examples from a secondary guide rather than universal or standardized ratings. Do not assume that every electric heater is 1,500 watts, that every propane heater is 46,000 BTU/h, or that the two figures represent equal comfort.

For a rough energy calculation, divide the electric heater’s wattage by 1,000 to obtain kilowatts, then multiply by hours of operation and your utility’s price per kilowatt-hour. Propane requires the model’s consumption rate, the usable fuel in your cylinder, and your local refill or exchange price. Because those inputs vary by product, setting, region, and date, there is no defensible universal cost-per-hour winner.

Match the heater to your space

Open patios and exposed decks

Propane is often practical in a truly open area where a cylinder and heater can stand on a solid, level surface. You can reposition a freestanding unit as seating changes, provided the model permits movement and the heater is stable. Open air also supplies the ventilation required by combustion appliances.

“Open” does not mean every roofed or screened area is acceptable. A pergola, awning, balcony, or screened porch can trap hot exhaust or violate the manual’s clearance rules. The chosen model’s outdoor-use statement, ventilation language, and clearance diagram control. If the manual does not approve the location, do not rely on the fact that another heater appears to work there.

Covered patios and constrained mounting points

An electric infrared unit can suit a covered seating area when its outdoor rating, mounting method, clearances, and electrical installation specifically approve that location. A ceiling or wall can make directional heat predictable, but it can also put hot surfaces too close to wood, fabric, paint, or plastic. “Electric” does not automatically mean “safe under a roof.” Follow the supplied mounting distances and keep the beam away from combustible materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Propane under a roof is especially sensitive to ventilation and clearance. The Mi-T-M manual’s instruction is explicit: “WARNING: NOT FOR USE INSIDE; FOR OUTSIDE USE ONLY.” That is the manufacturer’s instruction for the cited unit. It is not permission to use another model in an enclosed or semi-enclosed space.

Small, targeted seating areas

Infrared heat is efficient as a zoning tool. Aim a properly mounted unit at the chairs or table you occupy instead of heating the whole patio. People outside the beam may feel little benefit, so check the viewing angle and mounting height before choosing a low-wattage model.

Large or frequently rearranged seating areas

A freestanding propane heater can provide a broader surrounding pattern and move with a changing layout. The trade-off is cylinder handling, a larger hot appliance in the circulation path, and more stringent stability and clearance checks. Multiple electric units can cover separate zones, but each adds electrical load and may require more than one suitable circuit.

Fuel, connections, and installation requirements

Propane checklist

The cited Mi-T-M model requires a 20-pound cylinder. The Patio Comfort PC-02 manual says its cylinder is not included and describes refilling or exchanging it through an authorized station. Cylinder dimensions, valve type, hose, regulator, and attachment procedure must match the heater; never improvise adapters or connect a cylinder that the manual does not approve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the required cylinder size and valve connection in the manual.
  • Use only the supplied or model-approved hose and regulator.
  • Inspect the hose for cracking, abrasion, kinks, or heat damage before each season.
  • Keep the cylinder upright and secured as directed; do not place it where it can be struck, tipped, or heated by another appliance.
  • Plan where you will refill or exchange the cylinder and how you will transport it safely.

Electric checklist

Read the nameplate for voltage, wattage, current, plug type, and any requirement for a dedicated circuit or permanent wiring. Verify that the receptacle, outdoor-rated cover, ground-fault protection, extension-cord limits, and weather exposure meet the product instructions and local electrical rules. A standard indoor extension cord is not a substitute for an approved outdoor installation.

  • Confirm the circuit can carry the heater’s load without nuisance tripping or overheating.
  • Use only the cord length, plug, and connector arrangement permitted by the manual.
  • Keep plugs, connections, and controls out of standing water and away from drainage paths.
  • For a hardwired or permanently mounted heater, use a qualified electrician where required by local code.
  • Do not drill, bypass thermal protection, or modify the enclosure to make a mounting location work.

Propane setup: a safe operating sequence

The following sequence is a planning framework. The exact order, fasteners, leak-test method, and ignition procedure in your manual take precedence.

  1. Choose the location. Select a solid, level, outdoor surface with the model’s required clearance from combustibles above and around the heater. The Mi-T-M example specifies 2 feet at the sides and 3 feet above combustibles; do not transfer those dimensions to another unit.
  2. Assemble the stand and reflector. Tighten the supplied hardware and check that the burner, reflector, guard, and control housing are aligned. A loose reflector can change heat direction and stability.
  3. Secure the cylinder. Install the specified 20-pound cylinder upright in its retaining bracket or compartment. Keep the valve accessible without placing the cylinder in the hottest part of the appliance.
  4. Connect the regulator and hose. Hand-start the fitting to avoid cross-threading, then tighten only as the instructions specify. Never use a damaged seal or a makeshift connector.
  5. Check for leaks. Use the manual’s approved leak-test procedure before lighting and whenever the cylinder is changed. If bubbles, odor, or hissing indicate a leak, close the valve, move away from ignition sources, and correct the connection before use.
  6. Ignite as instructed. Keep your face and hands away from the burner area, use the specified control sequence, and stop if ignition is delayed or unstable.
  7. Monitor operation. Do not leave the heater unattended while burning. Watch for flame lifting, unusual odor, soot, tipping, or contact with nearby materials.
  8. Shut down and cool. Turn the control off, close the cylinder valve when the manual directs, and allow all surfaces to cool before moving, covering, or storing the unit.

Electric installation and daily use

  1. Verify the approved location. Measure the required distance from ceilings, walls, furniture, curtains, and other combustibles. Confirm that the mounting surface can carry the unit and that the infrared beam will reach the intended seats.
  2. Confirm the electrical supply. Compare the heater’s voltage and current with the circuit and receptacle. Test ground-fault protection where required by your local rules and product instructions.
  3. Mount or position the heater. Use the supplied brackets, fasteners, and tilt limits. Do not rest a mounted model on a table or suspend it from an improvised chain.
  4. Protect the connection. Route the cord so it cannot be pinched, walked on, pulled, or exposed to pooling water. Keep the plug connection elevated and weather protected as the manual specifies.
  5. Test at the lowest setting. Run the heater briefly while checking for tripped breakers, hot plugs, vibration, unusual odor, or contact with nearby surfaces. Turn it off immediately if any abnormal condition appears.
  6. Operate by zone. Use the lowest setting that keeps occupants comfortable, and switch the unit off when the area is empty. Infrared warmth is directional, so reposition chairs rather than defeating safety clearances to move the heater closer.

Weather, comfort, and placement trade-offs

Wind is the main reason an outdoor heater can feel weaker than its rating suggests. It carries heat away, cools exposed skin, and can disturb a propane flame. The Patio Comfort manual specifically lists wind, temperature, humidity, altitude, prevailing wind, and location as factors affecting its approximate warmth ring. A wall or windbreak may improve comfort, but it must not violate clearances or ventilation requirements.

Electric infrared can feel immediate on the skin because radiation travels directly to people and surfaces. It still cannot warm people outside the beam, and a gust can cool the warmed surfaces and occupants. Do not assume infrared is unaffected by wind. Orient the unit toward the occupied zone and consider seating backs or approved screens that block drafts without enclosing the appliance.

Propane warmth is more forgiving when several people sit around the heater, but the cylinder, stand, and hot reflector need a clear traffic path. Keep children, pets, coats, umbrellas, and moving furniture outside the specified hot zones. Never drape a cover over a warm heater.

Operating cost and ownership routine

Cost comparisons are meaningful only when the same use pattern is tested. Record the heater’s actual setting and runtime, then apply local prices:

  • Electric: kilowatts (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours used × your electricity rate.
  • Propane: fuel consumed during the same period × your refill or exchange price, including any cylinder fee.

Manufacturers may publish input or consumption data, but weather and thermostat or control cycling can change real use. A promotional cylinder price, a one-time exchange allowance, or a utility rate from another region should not be presented as a recurring cost. The available evidence does not establish a universal cheaper fuel.

Propane ownership includes cylinder storage, leak checks, regulator and hose inspection, and refilling or exchange trips. Electric ownership includes checking cords, plugs, mounting hardware, circuit capacity, and weather seals. A heater that costs less to run can still be the wrong choice if installing the required circuit or relocating the cylinder is impractical.

Safety rules that apply to either technology

  • Read the current manual and product label before first use; model-specific instructions override general advice.
  • Maintain every listed clearance from combustible walls, ceilings, furniture, fabrics, decorations, and vegetation.
  • Place freestanding equipment on a stable, level surface and secure it against tipping as directed.
  • Keep children and pets away from hot emitters, reflectors, guards, controls, and cylinders.
  • Stop using the heater after impact, water intrusion, damaged wiring, a cracked hose, abnormal flame, repeated breaker trips, or a burning-plastic smell until it has been inspected.
  • Never use a propane patio heater indoors, in a garage, or in an enclosed room. The Mi-T-M manual states that its cited heater is for outside use only and requires fresh-air ventilation.
  • Turn the heater off when occupants leave. The Mi-T-M manual specifically says not to leave the heater unattended while burning.
  • Follow local fire, building, gas, and electrical requirements. Federal definitions and rules do not replace local permitting or the manufacturer’s instructions.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The propane burner will not light

Confirm that the cylinder valve is open, the cylinder contains fuel, the regulator and hose are correctly connected, and the ignition sequence is being followed. If you smell gas, hear hissing, or see a leak during testing, close the valve and do not attempt repeated ignition. Have the appliance serviced if the problem persists.

The flame is yellow, lifting, or producing soot

Turn the unit off. Obstructed air inlets, a damaged burner, incorrect pressure, or contamination can create unsafe combustion. Do not enlarge jets or adjust the regulator unless the manufacturer’s procedure explicitly permits it; arrange qualified service.

The electric heater trips the breaker

Unplug it and identify what else shares the circuit. Check the nameplate load, receptacle condition, ground-fault device, and cord for moisture or damage. Repeated trips indicate a fault or inadequate circuit, not a reason to install a larger fuse or bypass protection.

The heater runs but feels ineffective

Check seating distance, wind direction, reflector or emitter orientation, and whether people are outside the infrared beam. Verify that furniture or a cover is not blocking radiation. A higher rating will not solve a placement that violates clearances or leaves occupants in a draft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision process

  1. Map the occupied zone. Mark the chairs, table, doors, roof edges, walls, and combustible surfaces.
  2. Classify the exposure. Decide whether the approved location is genuinely open air, covered but ventilated, or too enclosed for the candidate heater.
  3. Choose the heat pattern. Select broad surrounding warmth for movable group seating or directional infrared for a defined zone.
  4. Verify infrastructure. For propane, confirm cylinder, regulator, hose, storage, and refill logistics. For electric, confirm voltage, current, circuit, receptacle or wiring, mounting, and outdoor protection.
  5. Check the manual’s numbers. Record the exact clearances, mounting height, cylinder specification, weather limits, and operating controls for the model you are considering.
  6. Estimate your own cost. Use your local fuel and electricity prices with realistic hours and settings; do not substitute a generic online comparison.
  7. Plan shutdown and storage. Decide where a cooled electric unit will be stored or covered and where a propane cylinder will remain upright, secured, and protected according to its instructions.

Regulatory context

The U.S. Department of Energy defines an outdoor heater as “a gas-fired appliance designed for use in outdoor spaces only, and which is designed to provide heat proximate to the unit.” DOE records that its rule withdrawing a prior coverage determination for miscellaneous gas products, including outdoor heaters, took effect June 6, 2025. That definition and rule history provide regulatory context; they are not a safety approval, performance guarantee, or substitute for local requirements and the chosen product’s manual.

Bottom line for common patio layouts

  • Choose propane for an open, changeable patio where broad warmth and independence from an electrical outlet outweigh cylinder handling.
  • Choose electric infrared for a defined seating or entry zone where the required circuit and an approved wall or ceiling mount are already practical.
  • Choose neither yet if the only proposed location is enclosed, the clearances cannot be met, the surface is unstable, or the required fuel or electrical connection is unavailable.

Before purchase, compare the exact model manuals—not just marketing ratings—and confirm current local rules, listings, and installation requirements. That final check prevents the most common mismatch: selecting a heater whose fuel, heat pattern, or approved placement does not fit the patio.
