Yes—but only in a limited sense. Kirin’s Electric Salt Spoon, marketed in Japan as ElecSalt, uses a weak electrical current to enhance the perceived saltiness and umami of some low-sodium foods. It does not add sodium, turn completely salt-free food into salted food, or prove that users can safely cut sodium by a fixed percentage.
The technology is real, but the evidence is based mainly on a small sensory study. Results vary by person and dish, the spoon is designed for food that still contains some salt and moisture, and Kirin’s official store does not ship overseas.
What is the Electric Salt Spoon?
The Electric Salt Spoon is a battery-powered utensil developed by Kirin Holdings with the Homei Miyashita Laboratory at Meiji University. The current model is the ES-S002, sold in Japan under the ElecSalt name.
It is intended to help people tolerate reduced-sodium meals by making existing saltiness seem stronger. That distinction matters: the spoon does not add salt or remove sodium from a recipe. It changes the sensory conditions under which taste compounds already present in the food are perceived.

How can a spoon make food taste saltier?
The spoon contains electrodes in the utensil and handle. When the user holds the handle and eats, a weak current passes through a circuit involving the spoon, food and mouth. Kirin says the waveform is designed to influence the movement or distribution of taste-related ions, increasing the saltiness and umami perceived by the tongue.
In practical terms, it is better understood as a sensory aid than as a seasoning device:
- It does not manufacture or add sodium.
- It does not remove sodium already in the food.
- It needs a conductive path through food and the user’s mouth.
- The food generally needs enough moisture and salt-related ions for the effect to work.
Because of those requirements, a moderately reduced-salt soup is a more suitable test than a completely salt-free or very dry food. The mechanism and design background are described by Kirin and the Miyashita Laboratory research paper.

What did the research actually show?
Kirin’s 2022 report described a human sensory test involving 31 adults aged 40 to 65 who were currently reducing their salt intake or had done so previously. Participants compared a gel containing 0.80% salt with a reduced-salt gel containing 0.56% salt—a 30% reduction.
According to Kirin’s summary, electrical stimulation made the reduced-salt sample’s perceived saltiness approximately 1.5 times greater under the test conditions. The research was reported in a peer-reviewed paper in Frontiers in Virtual Reality.
That result is interesting, but it is narrower than viral descriptions often suggest. It shows a reported change in perceived saltiness in a small, controlled sensory experiment. It does not establish that:
- every user will experience a 1.5-fold increase;
- every type of food will respond the same way;
- people can reduce sodium by 30%, 50% or any other guaranteed amount;
- the spoon lowers blood pressure or improves kidney or heart outcomes;
- the device improves long-term adherence to a low-sodium diet.
The study was also funded by Kirin, so the findings should be described as promising but limited rather than as definitive independent proof.

Which foods work best?
Kirin recommends beginning with soups and other moist foods. The company identifies possible uses including noodles, curries, fried rice and rice bowls. Food should contact the spoon’s electrode and contain enough moisture to support the electrical circuit.

Kirin explicitly says experiences vary between individuals and dishes, so one unsuccessful bite does not necessarily settle the question—but neither should a successful bite be treated as a universal guarantee.
How to use the current spoon
- Hold the spoon so your hand contacts the handle electrode.
- Press and hold the switch for about two seconds to turn it on.
- Select one of the three current-intensity levels.
- Begin at level 1.
- Eat normally, allowing the food to contact the spoon’s electrode.
- Taste slowly. Kirin says the enhancement takes approximately 0.5 seconds to register.
- Turn the power off before cleaning.
- Remove the spoon tip and wash it like ordinary tableware.
- Do not wash the handle under running water.
The ES-S002 uses one CR2032 3-volt lithium coin battery. Kirin estimates approximately 20 days of use per battery. The spoon tip is rated for temperatures up to 100°C. Full instructions are available on Kirin’s official product page.
If the food does not taste saltier
- Confirm that the spoon is switched on.
- Make sure your hand is touching the handle electrode.
- Ensure the food contacts the spoon electrode.
- Try a soup or another moist dish.
- Eat slowly enough to notice the effect.
- Try a different intensity, beginning with the lowest level.
If the sensation is uncomfortable or symptoms persist, stop using the spoon. Tingling or discomfort should not be treated as proof that the device is working.

Safety: who should avoid it?
The Electric Salt Spoon is not a medical device and should not be used as treatment for hypertension, kidney disease, heart disease or any other condition.
Kirin’s safety information says the spoon should not be used by people with implanted or attached medical electrical equipment, including pacemakers and other life-support or monitoring devices. The manufacturer also lists restrictions involving heart disease, metal allergies, certain neurological conditions, bleeding disorders, ongoing dental treatment, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, autoimmune disease, being under 18, impaired sensation, inability to hold the utensil normally, or previous adverse reactions to similar electrical devices.
Anyone with kidney disease, heart failure, hypertension, an implanted device, pregnancy, dental treatment or another relevant condition should ask a clinician before considering an electrically active utensil. Do not change a prescribed sodium limit because the spoon appears to make food taste saltier.
Read the manufacturer’s complete safety information before use. Kirin says its current is within a safety range based partly on household electrical-therapy standards; that statement is not a substitute for individualized medical advice.

The current ES-S002 is officially listed at ¥24,750 including tax. Its published specifications include dimensions of approximately 39 × 201 × 28 mm and a weight of approximately 57 grams without the battery.
The official store says the product is intended for use in Japan and does not ship overseas. The product page also displays a sold-out indicator, so it is more accurate to describe the spoon as officially listed but requiring a current stock check—not as reliably available to buyers in the United States or elsewhere.
Unofficial imports may introduce questions about authenticity, warranty coverage, returns, safety documentation and support. The Electric Salt Cup is listed at ¥26,950 and may be more suitable for people whose main low-sodium meals are soups, but it has the same geographic and safety limitations. For many people, ordinary cooking strategies remain more practical: use lemon juice or vinegar for contrast; build flavor with herbs, spices, aromatics, roasted ingredients, mushrooms and tomatoes; and compare the total sodium in the finished meal rather than judging saltiness alone.

Salt substitutes require special care. Many contain potassium, which may be unsuitable for people with kidney disease or for anyone taking medicines that affect potassium levels. Ask a clinician or dietitian before using them.
The bottom line
Kirin’s Electric Salt Spoon is a genuine commercial product that can make some reduced-sodium foods seem saltier without adding sodium to the bite. Its strongest evidence is a small, company-linked sensory study—not a clinical trial proving lower blood pressure, safer kidney function or a guaranteed reduction in sodium intake. Moist foods are the most logical starting point, results are variable, safety restrictions are significant, and official sales are currently focused on Japan.
