During the major AWS outage on October 20, 2025, some Eight Sleep owners reported that they could not change their bed’s temperature, woke up sweating, or found adjustable components stuck in an inclined position. Others reported flashing indicators, alarms, failed app commands, and delayed sleep data.
“Roasting” was a vivid description of discomfort, not evidence that beds caught fire or caused confirmed injuries. The episode exposed a more important issue for connected-home buyers: what should a physical appliance do when the cloud it depends on disappears?

The short version
- The outage occurred on October 20, 2025, during a broad AWS disruption.
- Reports centered on Eight Sleep Pod systems, including Pod 3, Pod 4, and Pod 5 owners.
- Some users said temperature controls stopped responding, heating could not be reduced, or beds remained elevated.
- Eight Sleep acknowledged that the disruption affected some customers, apologized, and said devices were operating again after AWS recovered.
- The company later introduced an offline Backup Mode using Bluetooth for local control during some internet outages.
- Backup Mode reduces cloud dependence, but it does not solve power failures or prove that every function works offline on every model.
What owners experienced
Reports during the outage described more than a temporarily unavailable phone app. Some Eight Sleep customers said they were unable to lower or stop the bed’s heat and woke up sweating. Others reported that their beds were stuck in raised or inclined positions. Flashing lights, alarms, login failures, unresponsive commands, and delays in sleep reports were also described in coverage and user discussions.
Those reports are anecdotal and do not establish that every Pod behaved the same way. Nor do they prove that every device was heating uncontrollably. The more defensible conclusion is that some users lost the ability to change an active temperature or position state when they needed to do so.

Which beds were involved?
The affected product was generally not a complete mattress. Eight Sleep sells a smart mattress cover and Hub system that fits over an existing mattress. It can provide independent temperature control on each side, track sleep metrics, and work with an optional adjustable Base.
The incident primarily concerned Eight Sleep’s Pod ecosystem. Reports mentioned Pod 3, Pod 4, and Pod 5 owners, but the available evidence does not show that every generation or every customer was affected. It is also inaccurate to treat the event as proof that all connected beds malfunction during AWS outages.
How did an AWS outage reach a bedroom?
AWS did not directly control people’s mattresses. AWS supplied cloud infrastructure used by Eight Sleep; Eight Sleep’s own applications, backend services, firmware, and hardware determined how the system behaved when those services were unavailable.
The normal control path is broadly:
- A user changes temperature, starts a routine, or adjusts position in the Eight Sleep app or through a connected control.
- The request travels through Eight Sleep’s online services.
- The Pod Hub and associated hardware receive and execute the instruction.
- The system reports status and sleep information back through the same broader service infrastructure.
During the AWS incident, some of those online services became unreachable or could not process requests normally. If a device had no effective local fallback for its current state, it could remain at its existing temperature or position until service was restored.

This distinction matters. The outage was the trigger, but the consumer-facing failure was also a resilience and fail-safe design problem. A cloud outage should not automatically remove essential control of an appliance that can produce heat or move a person’s bed.
Why this was more serious than a broken app
Cloud dependence is relatively easy to tolerate for a streaming service or a smart light. It is more consequential for equipment that controls heat, motion, water, locks, or other physical conditions.
A resilient connected bed should ideally retain:
- Local temperature adjustment.
- A local stop or emergency-off control.
- Safe fallback behavior when the cloud is unreachable.
- A predictable temperature rather than continuation of an unwanted heating state.
- Manual release instructions for adjustable components.
- A clear indication that the system is offline.
- Safe recovery without unexpectedly replaying stale schedules.
The October incident did not establish that Eight Sleep intentionally designed an unsafe product, nor did the reviewed coverage establish confirmed injuries or fires. It did show why “works when the internet is available” is not a sufficient reliability standard for a physical sleep appliance.
Eight Sleep’s response
CEO Matteo Franceschetti apologized publicly and said the AWS disruption had affected some users’ sleep. Eight Sleep said it was restoring functionality as AWS recovered. The company also indicated that devices were working again, although sleep and health data processing could remain delayed.
Franceschetti said the company would work to make the Pod more resilient to outages. A later PCWorld report said Eight Sleep introduced an offline Backup Mode that lets the app communicate locally with the Pod through Bluetooth when internet service is unavailable.

That was a meaningful change because it addressed the central complaint: losing basic control of the bed during a cloud-service failure. It should not, however, be read as proof that the original system always supported complete offline operation. The available evidence does not provide a complete independent technical postmortem identifying precisely which component failed, which models shared the same behavior, or whether every reported symptom had one cause.
What Backup Mode does—and does not—solve
Backup Mode is best understood as a local-control fallback, not as a guarantee that the Pod is independent of the internet. Bluetooth control may help when the Hub has power but cannot reach Wi-Fi or Eight Sleep’s cloud services. It cannot help during a total power outage, a failed Hub, a Bluetooth-pairing problem, or a phone that cannot run the required app.
Before relying on it, owners and buyers should confirm:
- Which Pod generations support Backup Mode.
- Whether the feature works on both iOS and Android.
- Which controls remain available: temperature, position, alarms, and accessories may not all be equivalent.
- Whether setup must initially be completed online.
- Whether a subscription is required for local controls.
- What happens when Wi-Fi is lost but the Hub remains powered.
- Whether schedules are discarded, paused, or replayed after reconnection.
In practical terms, Backup Mode appears to reduce the risk exposed by the 2025 outage. It does not eliminate dependence on electricity, compatible software, Bluetooth, or the manufacturer’s implementation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A buyer’s offline-functionality checklist
Ask these questions before buying any connected bed—not only an Eight Sleep system:
- What works without internet? Can you change temperature, stop heating, adjust position, cancel alarms, and control both sides?
- What works without power? Bluetooth cannot operate a Hub or Base that has no electricity. Ask about manual temperature and mechanical-position fallbacks.
- What happens if the app or vendor API fails? A home Wi-Fi connection does not help if account authentication or the manufacturer’s backend is unavailable.
- What happens after reconnection? Confirm that an old heating schedule will not unexpectedly resume and that queued commands have predictable behavior.
- Is a subscription required? Separate the cost of hardware from recurring charges and determine which basic functions remain if the subscription lapses.
- Can a guest operate it? A device requiring account access and troubleshooting may be a poor choice for guest rooms, rentals, or hotels.
- What is the recovery path? Keep support contacts, owner documentation, and emergency instructions available offline.
Other approaches to consider
Eight Sleep is aimed at buyers who want dual-zone temperature control, automated routines, sleep tracking, and an integrated connected ecosystem. It is a poor fit for someone who requires guaranteed local operation, rejects recurring fees, or wants simple physical emergency controls.

Different designs may reduce the number of failure points. Chilipad/Dock Pro focuses primarily on temperature control. BedJet uses air-based climate control. Sleep Number Climate360 combines climate control with a broader smart-bed and adjustable-bed ecosystem. A conventional adjustable base paired with breathable or cooling bedding offers fewer automated features but less cloud dependence.

Those products are not interchangeable, and current alternative pricing is not included here. The relevant comparison is not simply which product has the most features; it is which system preserves essential control when the network, vendor, app, or subscription fails.
What existing owners should do
- Find and save the manufacturer’s support and emergency instructions for offline access.
- Learn whether controls on the Hub, cover, or Base work without the app and internet.
- Test offline operation before depending on the bed overnight.
- If a heated device cannot be stopped or seems abnormally hot, follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Disconnect power only when those instructions permit it, and stop using the device until it is safe.
- Do not modify electrical or plumbing connections to bypass the Hub.
- For a stuck adjustable base, follow the documented manual-release procedure rather than forcing the mechanism.
The broader lesson for connected construction and home systems
The Eight Sleep episode is a useful warning for any connected physical system installed in a home. Internet access is not the same as local control, and cloud recovery is not the same as safe failure.
For equipment that moves, heats, cools, pumps, locks, or monitors occupants, the minimum design questions are straightforward: Can the user stop it locally? Does it fail to a safe state? Is there a manual release? Does it clearly indicate loss of connectivity? Can it recover without executing stale commands?
The lesson is not that cloud services are inherently unacceptable. It is that a cloud-dependent product should degrade safely—and should retain essential local controls when the cloud disappears.
