It replaces buried perimeter wire with app-defined boundaries and navigation beacons, then handles most routine mowing in a quiet, orderly way. The catch is that the lawn still needs preparation: beacon placement matters, the mower often leaves edge gaps, complex spaces may need extra hardware, and the owner must clear hazards and replace model-specific blades.
That makes the GOAT G1 a strong option for a medium-to-large, mostly open lawn where avoiding wire installation is the priority. It is a weaker choice for irregular yards or for anyone expecting perfect edging and zero maintenance.

What is the ECOVACS GOAT G1?
The GOAT G1 is an autonomous robotic lawn mower that replaces a buried perimeter wire with app-defined boundaries and physical navigation beacons. That is its genuine breakthrough: instead of trenching or staking a continuous wire around the lawn, you map the mowing area in the ECOVACS HOME app and position beacons to establish the mower’s reference points.

ECOVACS GOAT G1 specifications
The specifications below describe the regional G1-1600 model documented by ECOVACS. Check the exact model and regional listing before buying because the G1-800, G1-1600, and G1-2000 differ in capacity, battery, connectivity, and included hardware.
| Specification | GOAT G1-1600 regional model |
|---|---|
| Recommended maximum lawn area | Up to 1,600 square meters |
| Cutting width | 22 cm |
| Cutting-height range | 30–60 mm |
| Noise emission | 59 dBA |
| Battery | 5,200 mAh lithium-ion |
| Mower protection | IPX6 |
| Charging-station protection | IPX4 |
| Navigation and sensing | TrueMapping localization, panoramic and fisheye cameras, visual sensing, time-of-flight sensing, and AIVI 3D obstacle avoidance |
ECOVACS also promotes the two cameras for multi-spot garden monitoring. That makes the GOAT G1 partly a remotely viewable outdoor camera platform as well as a mower. It should be treated as a feature, not as a tested home-security system.
G1-800 vs. G1-1600 vs. G1-2000
The model number broadly indicates the mower’s maximum intended lawn area:
- GOAT G1-800: approximately 800 square meters.
- GOAT G1-1600: approximately 1,600 square meters.
- GOAT G1-2000: approximately 2,000 square meters.
Notebookcheck’s model comparison indicates that all three variants use the same 220 mm cutting width and 30–60 mm cutting-height range, but they differ in battery capacity, connectivity, and beacon bundles. The G1-800 is listed with a 4 Ah battery and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. The G1-1600 is listed with a 5.2 Ah battery, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and optional 4G. The G1-2000 is listed with an 8.7 Ah battery, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and 4G.
Beacon counts also vary in the reviewed lineup: two for the G1-800 and G1-1600, and four for the G1-2000. Those contents can vary by market, so confirm the box contents rather than assuming that every G1-2000 listing includes the same accessories.
Choose according to the mowable lawn area, not the size of the entire property. A large house lot may contain only a modest grass area, while a smaller property with separate sections, narrow passages, trees, beds, and poor beacon visibility may be more difficult for the mower than a larger open rectangle.
The wire-free setup is the G1’s Eureka moment
Traditional robotic mowers generally require a perimeter wire around the working area. Installing that wire can mean measuring boundaries, trenching or securing the cable, avoiding utility lines and garden features, and repairing it later if it is cut. The GOAT G1 takes a different approach: its boundary is created in software, while navigation beacons provide the physical positioning reference.

ECOVACS says a standard garden can be framed in approximately 20 minutes in simulated testing. That is a manufacturer-reported setup claim, not a guaranteed installation time. The actual job depends on the lawn’s shape, the charging-station position, the number of beacons, available power, and how much mapping and correction is required.
The wire-free design removes the most unpleasant installation task, but it does not remove installation altogether. The beacons are visible, battery-powered outdoor hardware. They must be positioned where the mower can use them reliably, and the manual says one GOAT can bind up to 10 beacons. CHIP’s test describes line-of-sight considerations and a maximum spacing of 45 meters in its installation context.
Two beacons may be enough for a simple, open rectangular lawn. An L-shaped or obstructed lawn may need more. EFTM’s reviewer needed an additional beacon for an L-shaped yard, which illustrates the important buying distinction: the G1 is wire-free, not hardware-free.
Installation and app experience
Before mapping, plan the charging station as carefully as the mower’s route. The station needs access to power, a usable approach, and enough clearance for the GOAT to enter and leave. In CHIP’s installation, the available clearance and the power-supply cable limited where the station could be placed.
The basic setup sequence is:
- Install the ECOVACS HOME app and create an account.
- Place the charging station where the mower has a clear approach and reliable access to power.
- Position the navigation beacons around the lawn, considering visibility and spacing.
- Use Bluetooth to pair the mower and bind the beacons in the app.
- Connect the GOAT to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. The manual says the phone and mower should be in the same router environment during Wi-Fi setup.
- Map the mowing area and define the boundaries and restricted sections shown in the app.
- Set the cutting height, schedule, rain-delay behavior, and preferred mowing mode.
For Bluetooth pairing, the manual specifies keeping the phone and mower within approximately 10 meters. A dual-band router is fine, but the initial Wi-Fi connection requires the 2.4 GHz band according to the cited manual.
Once configured, the app supports scheduling, mowing-mode controls, cutting-height adjustment instructions, rain-delay settings, and a command to return the mower to its station. The manual says the GOAT can support two seasonal schedules and can generate a schedule based on lawn area, after which the owner can modify the preset.
Notebookcheck found the app broadly effective, although it reported occasional quirks. That is a fair description: the app is one of the system’s strengths, but it should not be treated as flawless or as a substitute for checking the mower’s physical setup.

Mowing performance: orderly coverage, imperfect edges
The GOAT G1’s strongest mowing behavior is its planned, row-by-row coverage. Notebookcheck observed that it generally traversed the lawn systematically rather than wandering randomly. CHIP likewise found the G1-2000 efficient in line-by-line mowing and quiet during operation.
That orderly movement matters in daily use. The mower is easier to predict, its coverage is less chaotic than that of older random-path wire-guided machines, and the lawn receives a deliberate maintenance pattern rather than a series of apparently accidental passes.
The major weakness is edge work. Notebookcheck found that the mower sometimes left a substantial gap along lawn edges. The blade disc is centrally placed, approximately 10 cm from the mower’s outer edge, and the GOAT may turn farther away when it interprets a plant, raised bed, wall, or adjacent surface as an obstacle.
In practical terms, the G1 automates the main lawn more successfully than it finishes the perimeter. Expect to use a string trimmer or manual edger around beds, walls, uneven borders, tree surrounds, and grass-to-paving transitions. If a completely finished edge is your definition of hands-free mowing, this is the wrong product category to approach without qualification.
Obstacle avoidance is cautious, not magical
Independent testing was generally positive about the G1’s ability to recognize larger obstacles. Notebookcheck reported reliable detection of objects including balls, a goal frame, garden tools, people, and test animals or figures. The mower usually detected them early and kept a conservative distance.
Recommended Free Tools
That caution improves avoidance but reduces coverage. The mower may leave a wider unmowed patch around an object than a human would, and CHIP found the system overly sensitive in some situations. Bushes and low-hanging branches could confuse the mower, while Notebookcheck found that very low objects—such as garden scissors lying close to the ground—were more difficult to detect. Its report indicates that objects may need to be around 10 cm high for dependable detection, depending on app settings and conditions.
Safety reminder: Obstacle detection is a risk-reduction feature, not a guarantee of safety. Clear stones, sticks, wires, bones, toys, tools, and other foreign objects before mowing. Do not leave children, pets, or wildlife unsupervised around the mower just because its cameras and sensors are active.
Battery life, charging, rain, and grass height
The GOAT G1 automatically returns to its station when it needs to charge and can resume the mowing task afterward. Independent figures vary by model and test conditions. Notebookcheck measured roughly three hours of operation for the G1-2000, with a full charge taking approximately 3.5 hours. CHIP recorded an average mowing period of approximately 155 minutes and an average recharge period of approximately 113 minutes.
Those observations are useful for setting expectations, but they are not universal battery guarantees. Grass density, terrain, route length, temperature, obstacle avoidance, connectivity, and the exact G1 variant all affect operating time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The mower has rain sensing and rain-delay behavior. CHIP reported that the rain sensor prevented mowing on wet grass during its test. That is helpful for lawn protection and traction, but it does not mean the mower should be left in every weather condition without checking the manual and local operating guidance.
The GOAT is a maintenance mower, not an overgrown-lawn rescue machine. ECOVACS’s manual says the grass should be no longer than 10 cm before operation. If it has grown beyond that, cut it roughly with a conventional mower first. The manual says the GOAT then maintains grass up to approximately 6 cm.
Maintenance and ongoing ownership
Routine maintenance is modest, but the G1 is not maintenance-free. Keep the cutting area free of debris, inspect the mower and underside, monitor the wheels and sensors, and follow the manual’s cleaning and storage instructions. The mower’s ability to operate autonomously does not eliminate ordinary outdoor-equipment care.
The most clearly documented consumable is the blade kit. ECOVACS says GOAT blades are not universal and recommends buying GOAT-specific blades from ECOVACS or an authorized retailer. Its G1 accessory listing describes a kit containing 12 blades and 12 screws and gives an approximate replacement interval of six to eight weeks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That interval is only a starting point. A large lawn, frequent mowing, stones, sticks, sandy soil, and other debris can shorten blade life, while a clean lawn with lighter use may extend it. The original documentation also lists a spare blade kit in the box, reinforcing that replacement is normal operating maintenance rather than an unusual repair.

When comparing parts, look for the exact model compatibility rather than buying generic robotic-mower blades. A useful maintenance purchase to verify is the GOAT G1 replacement blade kit, provided the listing clearly identifies the relevant G1 model and includes compatible screws.
Additional navigation beacons are another possible cost. They make the most sense for large, irregular, L-shaped, or obstructed lawns—not as an automatic upgrade for every buyer. Assess the lawn’s shape and visibility before purchasing extra hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Camera, privacy, and outdoor monitoring considerations
The panoramic and fisheye cameras support navigation, obstacle recognition, and multi-spot garden monitoring through the ECOVACS ecosystem. ECOVACS’s regional product material references TÜV Rheinland data-protection certification, which supports describing privacy as a design consideration but does not establish that the product is risk-free or that no data could ever be exposed.
If you enable remote camera monitoring, review the current app permissions, account-security options, privacy policy, and regional data practices. Use a strong, unique account password and keep the app and mower software current where official updates are available. This review did not establish an independent privacy audit, so buyers who are particularly sensitive to outdoor cameras should treat the monitoring feature as an additional privacy decision, not merely a free extra.
Price and availability
Notebookcheck’s European review context listed recommended prices of €1,099 for the G1-800, €1,299 for the G1-1600, and €1,999 for the G1-2000. Those are historical, region-specific recommended prices and should not be reused as current U.S. pricing.
The current ECOVACS U.S. GOAT product-family page prominently presents newer A- and O-series products, while ECOVACS separately maintains an authorized-retailer pathway. That makes the original G1 a legacy or region-dependent purchase candidate in U.S. coverage until a live listing is confirmed.
Before ordering, verify all of the following:
- the exact model number—G1-800, G1-1600, or G1-2000;
- live stock and the seller’s identity;
- regional voltage and app support;
- warranty coverage and service arrangements;
- return terms;
- included beacon count and accessories; and
- availability of model-specific blades and other replacement parts.
Do not assume that an old marketplace listing represents current U.S. support, software longevity, or an intact warranty.
Who should buy the ECOVACS GOAT G1?
The ECOVACS GOAT G1 robotic lawn mower makes the most sense for someone with a medium-to-large, mostly open lawn who strongly dislikes the idea of installing perimeter wire. It is particularly appealing if scheduled, quiet, systematic mowing matters more than perfect finishing around every boundary.
It is a reasonable choice when you can place and maintain navigation beacons, keep debris off the lawn, prevent the grass from becoming overgrown, and accept an occasional string-trimmer pass. The G1’s strongest value is removing repetitive main-lawn mowing and the buried-wire installation job—not eliminating every task associated with lawn care.
It is a weaker fit if your property has many narrow passages, separated grass sections, abrupt transitions, dense beds, low branches, or difficult obstructions. It is also a poor fit if you expect the robot to handle an untidy yard safely without preparation, require guaranteed current U.S. availability, or are uncomfortable with app-connected equipment and outdoor cameras.
Verdict
The ECOVACS GOAT G1 delivers a real installation breakthrough by replacing perimeter wire with app mapping and navigation beacons. On a suitable lawn, it mows quietly and efficiently, follows an orderly pattern, detects many common obstacles, pauses in rain, and returns to charge before continuing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBut the trade-offs are substantial enough to define the buying decision. Beacon placement matters. Complex lawns may require extra beacons. Conservative obstacle avoidance can reduce coverage. Low objects and branches can still challenge the sensors. Edge gaps are a recurring weakness, and model-specific blades are a normal ongoing expense.
Buy the ECOVACS GOAT G1 robotic lawn mower for its wire-free setup and dependable automation across the main lawn—not if you expect flawless edge work or a maintenance-free garden.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The GOAT G1 is one of the more convincing early wire-free robotic mowers. Its Eureka moment is installation, not total autonomy: it removes buried boundary wire and automates routine mowing well on open, prepared lawns, but still needs thoughtful beacon placement, hazard clearing, blade replacement, and manual edge trimming.
