Ecovacs GOAT G1-800 Review: Smart, Wire-Free, but Not Hands-Off

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The ECOVACS GOAT G1-800 is genuinely intelligent for its generation. It replaces buried boundary wire with wireless beacons, maps the lawn, mows in systematic rows, avoids many obstacles, returns to charge and supports remote monitoring. But it is not a completely hands-off lawn-care system: setup still involves beacon placement and manual mapping, the garden needs reliable Wi-Fi, and edge trimming may remain necessary.

That makes it a sensible discounted purchase for a fairly open lawn of up to 800 m2—not an automatic recommendation for complex gardens or buyers who want the latest hardware and straightforward current availability.

Who should buy the GOAT G1-800?

  • Consider it for a simple or moderately complex lawn, especially if avoiding buried perimeter wire is important.
  • Buy with caution if the garden has narrow passages, multiple separated areas, raised beds or weak Wi-Fi.
  • Skip it if you expect perfect edging, zero setup, or a current US model with uncomplicated warranty support.

The G1-800 is rated for lawns up to 800 m2—about 8,611 square feet. That is a manufacturer capacity rating, not a guarantee that every 800 m2 garden will be covered equally well. A simple rectangular lawn can be easier than a smaller garden divided by paths, gates, trees and tight corridors.

What is the ECOVACS GOAT G1-800?

The G1-800 is the smaller-capacity model in ECOVACS’ original GOAT G1 family, alongside the G1-1600 and G1-2000. It uses wireless navigation beacons instead of a buried perimeter cable. Its mapping and obstacle-avoidance system combines beacon positioning with a panoramic camera, forward-facing AI camera, time-of-flight sensor, rain sensor and GPS-related functions.

Designed for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care.

ECOVACS says the mower can manage up to 16 mowing zones. The installation manual identifies a beacon signal radius of up to 45 metres under stated conditions, but walls, trees, structures and the shape of the garden can affect real-world coverage. The official UK product page lists the G1-800’s wire-free boundary system and rated area.

Wire-free does not mean hardware-free

The G1-800 avoids the labour of burying boundary wire, but it still needs a physical navigation system. Independent testing lists two included beacons for the G1-800, with additional units potentially required for more complicated gardens.

Expect to:

  1. Place the charging station on a suitable level surface and connect it to power.
  2. Install batteries in the beacons.
  3. Position and register the beacons in the ECOVACS HOME app.
  4. Pair the mower and connect it to garden Wi-Fi.
  5. Manually steer the mower around the lawn perimeter using the app’s virtual joystick.
  6. Create no-entry areas around ponds, beds, trees, play equipment and other hazards.
  7. Allow the mower to learn the mapped area, then check the result before scheduling automatic mowing.

This is usually quicker and less disruptive than installing buried wire, but it is not a one-button installation. During independent testing, deleting a problematic map did not always solve the issue; removing the mower from the app and adding it again was required.

How intelligent is the navigation?

The G1-800 generally behaves more intelligently than a random-pattern mower. It creates a digital map and works through the lawn in organised rows, producing consistent coverage on suitable areas. Notebookcheck’s testing found a systematic mowing pattern and generally uniform results.

Its intelligence has limits, however. There is a difference between recognising an obstacle and mowing efficiently around it. A cautious mower may avoid a plant successfully but leave a larger patch of grass than expected. It may also mark a narrow area complete even when a strip has been missed.

ECOVACS’ installation manual identifies the mower’s panoramic camera, AI camera, ToF sensor, rain sensor, GPS sensor and beacon system. These components make the G1-800 sophisticated for its generation, but they do not remove the need for a properly prepared garden.

Obstacle avoidance is good, but not a safety guarantee

Independent testing was positive with many visible obstacles. The mower detected objects such as balls, garden tools, people and hedgehog figures, often stopping or changing direction before contact.

The 32V high-performance platform and dual-blade disc system provide strong cutting torque and fast blade rotation, helping the mower cut through dense, fast-growing grass and uneven terrain.
  • 7500 mAh Large-Capacity Battery with 189W Fast Charging - Engineered for medium to large yards, GOAT A3000 is equipped with a 7500 mAh high-capacity battery and 189W fast charging system. It fully recharges in approximately 70 minutes, allowing extended runtime and reduced downtime for efficient, scheduled lawn maintenance.
  • Smart App-Controlled Lawn Care with Custom Zones - Manage your robotic lawn mower through the ECOVACS app. Edit maps, create multiple mowing zones, set no-go areas, adjust cutting height and speed, and define travel paths between zones. Ideal for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care schedules.

Another review found a more practical weakness: the mower could treat dandelions and other weeds as obstacles. Tennis balls, dog toys and garden clutter also need to be considered during mapping and mowing. Do not rely on the system to identify every small, dark, flat or partly buried object.

Before each unattended run, remove toys, cables, tools, stones and pet waste. Keep children and animals away during initial mapping and testing. Obstacle avoidance should reduce risk, not be treated as a guarantee of pet or child safety.

The biggest weakness: lawn edges

The G1-800 can mow the middle of a lawn attractively while still leaving finishing work around the perimeter. Notebookcheck found that the blade disc sits roughly 10 cm inside the mower’s outer body. Plants and irregular borders can make the effective gap wider.

Expect different results depending on the border:

  • Flat paving: usually the most favourable situation.
  • Raised beds and walls: likely to leave a visible strip.
  • Uneven grass-to-bed transitions: can trigger cautious obstacle avoidance.
  • Curves, corners and narrow strips: are more likely to need inspection and manual finishing.

The G1-800 is an automated mower, not necessarily a replacement for a string trimmer. If a sharp, finished edge is essential, budget for occasional edging work.

Cut quality and lawn coverage

When the lawn is suitable and the mower runs regularly, the evidence supports an even, attractive cut. Independent reviewers reported a pleasing row pattern and uniform grass, including a particularly good result from daily mowing.

The G1-800 has a listed 220 mm cutting width, a 4 Ah battery and mechanically adjustable cutting height from approximately 3 to 6 cm in 13 steps. Those figures should be checked against the documentation for the relevant market.

Do not treat the 800 m2 rating as a single-charge promise. Coverage depends on growth rate, cutting height, obstacles, slopes, weather, recharge cycles and how much of the nominal area is actually accessible. The cited independent runtime measurements were primarily for the G1-2000, not the G1-800, so they should not be presented as G1-800 results.

  • Easy App Setup with Custom Zones & No-Go Areas - Use the ECOVACS app to create mowing zones, adjust schedules, and customize no-go areas for challenging sections of your yard. Initial setup and fine-tuning may require a few adjustments to optimize performance for unique lawn layouts.
  • Designed for Tight Spaces Others Can’t Reach - Built with a super-narrow body, GOAT O1000 LiDAR PRO easily passes through tight paths and narrow lawn corridors as slim as 0.8 m. Perfect for compact yards, side lawns, and complex layouts where larger robotic mowers struggle.

Wet grass can reduce cut quality and leave clumps. ECOVACS’ guidance on robot mower edge cutting also warns that damp conditions can affect mowing results. Scheduling during drier periods is preferable.

Garden layout matters more than the headline area

Before buying, measure the usable mowing areas rather than only the total plot. ECOVACS guidance cited in independent testing indicates that a mowing passage should be about 1.5 metres wide or more. Tight corridors, gates, steps, disconnected areas and abrupt transitions deserve particular caution.

Ask these questions:

  • Can the mower reach every area without being carried?
  • Are the mowing zones connected and wide enough?
  • Will beacon signals reach the whole lawn?
  • Are there drops, steps, ponds or raised borders that need no-entry zones?
  • Does garden Wi-Fi reach the charging station and the farthest mowing point?

A 700 m2 rectangle may be a better fit than a 300 m2 garden split into several awkward sections.

ECOVACS HOME app and remote features

The app is one of the G1-800’s strengths. It supports mapping, no-entry zones, multiple mowing areas, scheduling, task and battery status, mowing settings, rain-sensor controls, safety functions and remote camera access. The mower can also return to its dock to recharge and respond to rain conditions.

Menu names and firmware behaviour can change, so current app screens should not be assumed to match older reviews. More importantly, remote operation depends on Wi-Fi. Test the signal at the charging station and at the farthest mowing point before purchase. Bluetooth should not be treated as a substitute for garden-wide remote connectivity, and the G1-800 should not be assumed to have cellular backup.

Camera monitoring

The mower’s cameras can provide live video and two-way communication through the app. That is a useful extra for checking the garden or locating the mower, but it is not a replacement for a dedicated security camera. Video quality and latency depend on signal transmission, and the mower may be unavailable when it is charging or blocked.

Use a strong account password and the mower’s supported PIN or theft-protection settings. Consider who may be visible in the camera’s field of view and treat the feature as an internet-connected camera, not merely a lawn-care control.

Maintenance and ownership

Although the mower works unattended, it is not maintenance-free. Regularly:

  • Remove grass from the underside and wheels.
  • Clean the cameras and sensors.
  • Inspect the blades and replace worn blades with compatible parts.
  • Check beacon batteries and placement.
  • Keep the charging station clear.
  • Remove obstacles and pet waste before mowing.
  • Install relevant app and software updates.
  • Protect the mower from prolonged exposure and store it appropriately during severe weather or the off-season.

A garage or shelter is a separate accessory on the official product page, so include that potential cost and space requirement in the installation plan.

Current availability: an important buying caveat

The G1-800 is no longer the obvious current ECOVACS recommendation in every market. When checked, the official UK product page was marked sold out. The current US shop prominently lists newer GOAT O-series and A-series products rather than the G1-800. That does not by itself prove formal discontinuation, but it does make the G1-800 primarily a remaining-stock, used or regional-market purchase.

Notebookcheck reported a historical European RRP of €1,099 and an additional-beacon price of €99. Those are historical European figures, not current US prices. A used listing should include the mower, charging station, power cable, all beacons, beacon batteries or compatible replacements, blades and fasteners, and a properly reset account. Confirm regional support and warranty coverage before buying.

G1-800 versus newer GOAT models

The G1-800’s beacon-based system was advanced for its generation, but newer ECOVACS models advertise technologies such as LiDAR-based navigation and improved or zero-edge cutting on selected products. The current US GOAT range is therefore more relevant to a new US buyer who wants current support and hardware.

The G1-800 can still make sense at a substantial discount, particularly when its beacon system suits the lawn. It is less compelling when a remaining unit costs close to a newer model or lacks accessories.

Alternatives by technology

  • Traditional boundary-wire mower: potentially simpler and more predictable once installed, but the initial installation is more labour-intensive.
  • RTK mower: can reduce visible beacon hardware, but signal quality and sky visibility matter, especially near structures.
  • Vision or LiDAR mower: may reduce reliance on beacons or RTK, though newer systems have their own navigation and support trade-offs.
  • Conventional cordless mower: cheaper and simpler to purchase, but it provides no unattended automation.

Specific competitors should be judged on the actual lawn, service network, mapping behaviour, edge performance and regional support—not on technology labels alone.

Common problems and practical fixes

Mapping fails or the boundary is wrong

Check beacon placement and batteries, confirm Wi-Fi, clear the route and remap slowly. If deleting the map does not help, remove the mower from the app and add it again before repeating setup.

The mower leaves missed strips

Inspect narrow passages and edges first. The inset blade disc, uneven transitions and cautious detection around plants can all create uncut margins. A trimmer may be the appropriate solution rather than another map reset.

The mower stops around weeds or clutter

Remove toys and tools, keep the cameras clean and mow more frequently so the grass and weeds do not become unexpected visual obstacles.

Remote control is unreliable

Test Wi-Fi outdoors, not just inside the house. Walls, outbuildings and garden structures can create dead spots.

Final verdict

The ECOVACS GOAT G1-800 is smart in the ways that matter most for its generation: it maps a lawn, plans orderly routes, detects many obstacles and manages routine mowing with little day-to-day intervention. Its wire-free boundary system is a genuine convenience compared with buried cable.

But the headline claim that it “doesn’t get any smarter than this” needs qualification. The mower still needs beacons, manual perimeter mapping, reliable Wi-Fi, hazard removal, sensor care and—on many lawns—manual edge trimming. It is best viewed as a capable automated mower, not a completely autonomous gardener.

Buy one at a strong discount if your lawn is open, connected and within its practical capacity, and the complete beacon hardware is included. Check newer GOAT models first if you are buying new in the US or want the latest navigation platform. Skip the G1-800 if perfect edging, zero setup or effortless handling of a fragmented garden is non-negotiable.
