They can help offset daytime electricity use, and the Ultra can store surplus solar for later use. But this is not a nationwide, whole-home solar replacement. Plug-in grid-connected use remains dependent on state law, utility rules, equipment configuration, outlet capacity, and local electrical requirements.
EcoFlow’s own U.S. pages also disagree about availability: one current store page lists Utah and Maryland, while several STREAM Ultra pages still say Utah only. Confirm eligibility with EcoFlow and your utility before ordering or installing anything.

What EcoFlow is selling
EcoFlow markets STREAM as a “plug-and-play solar” system: a small distributed solar installation intended for a balcony, deck, backyard structure, wall, or another permitted location rather than a conventional roof-mounted array.
The system can be configured in two principal ways:
#1 Best Overall
- To ensure prompt arrived, please note that the DELTA 3 Classic Solar Generator and 220W Solar Panel will be arrived separately. If you receive one item before the other, kindly await the arrival of the remaining item.

- <10ms UPS: Protect sensitive electronics like PCs, servers, and medical devices. DELTA 3 Classic automatically switches to battery in under 10ms, preventing downtime, data loss, or interruptions.
- STREAM Microinverter: Converts solar-panel DC electricity into household AC power and feeds it into a household circuit through a standard outlet in an approved configuration.
- STREAM Ultra: Combines solar inputs, a battery, and a grid-tied inverter in one enclosure. It can store surplus solar and supply energy later, including at night or during a short-duration outage when configured for that purpose.
The important distinction is that this is bill-offset solar with limited stored-energy backup, not an automatic whole-home power plant in the conventional sense.
How the STREAM system works
The basic energy path is:
Solar panels → STREAM Microinverter or STREAM Ultra → household circuit → appliances, battery, or grid
During normal grid operation, solar power can be consumed by loads operating in the home. With an Ultra, surplus energy can be stored and used later. Depending on the configuration, meter, utility policy, and local rules, excess generation may also be exported to the grid.

A portable setup generally follows this path:
Solar panels → portable battery → appliances
The STREAM’s grid-connected equipment is intended to interact with household circuits and therefore raises additional questions about anti-islanding, utility interconnection, electrical circuits, metering, and local law.
STREAM Microinverter: the lower-cost entry point
The STREAM Microinverter is designed primarily for direct solar production. It converts panel output into household AC power and plugs into a standard household outlet in an approved installation.
EcoFlow lists:
- Advertised conversion efficiency of approximately 23% to 25%, depending on the product-page presentation.
- Overcurrent, overvoltage, and anti-islanding protections.
- A claimed 10-year warranty.
- Compatibility with STREAM Ultra storage in a larger system.
It is the more relevant option for someone who already has compatible solar panels and primarily wants to reduce daytime grid consumption. It is a weaker fit for anyone whose main objective is substantial outage backup.
EcoFlow’s U.S. store showed a price of $369 on sale versus a $599 list price when checked in August 2026. That is a dated price snapshot, not a permanent price guarantee. The store page should also be checked for current stock and the exact contents of the selected configuration: panels, mounting hardware, cables, and accessories may not all be included.
See EcoFlow’s STREAM Microinverter details.
STREAM Ultra: solar, storage, and a grid-tied inverter
The STREAM Ultra is an all-in-one battery and hybrid/grid-tied inverter. It uses AC coupling and plugs into NEMA 5-15 or NEMA 5-20 AC sockets.
EcoFlow advertises:
- Up to 2,000 watts of solar input.
- Four MPPT solar inputs.
- An LFP battery rated by EcoFlow at 6,000 cycles to 70% capacity.
- Up to 1,200 watts of on-grid AC output in an advertised multi-unit configuration.
- A footnoted maximum of 800 watts of on-grid AC output for one standalone unit.
- NEMA 4 water resistance.
- A claimed 10-year warranty.
These figures must not be conflated. A 2,000-watt solar-input rating describes the maximum panel input, not the amount of energy the system will generate each day. Likewise, 1,200 watts is a maximum output figure in a specified configuration, not 1,200 watts continuously for 24 hours.
EcoFlow’s U.S. listing showed the STREAM Ultra at $1,279 on sale versus a $1,899 list price in August 2026. A STREAM Ultra plus Microinverter bundle showed $1,599 on sale versus a $2,399 list price, although that listing was marked sold out in the captured store page. Check current availability before buying.

What it can—and cannot—power
The STREAM is intended to offset household consumption, not reproduce the output of a typical whole-roof solar array. It may help with loads such as refrigerators, networking equipment, lighting, computers, and other appliances whose operation overlaps with solar production. The actual result depends on the system configuration and the home’s circuit arrangement.
The system is not automatically suitable for large loads such as central air-conditioning, electric resistance heating, heat pumps, electric water heaters, or an EV charger. Those loads can consume far more power than a small plug-in system can produce or store.
Remember the difference between:
- Watts (W): Instantaneous power.
- Watt-hours (Wh) and kilowatt-hours (kWh): Energy used or stored over time.
- Solar input: The maximum power the equipment can accept from panels.
- AC output: The maximum power it can deliver to loads or the grid in a stated configuration.
- Battery capacity: Stored energy, which is not necessarily identical to usable energy after operating limits and conversion losses.
Where can U.S. customers use it?
The U.S. launch does not mean that every American household can legally connect a STREAM system to a wall outlet. A product can be technically certified and still be subject to state electrical law, utility policy, permitting requirements, meter rules, and site-specific restrictions.

Utah
EcoFlow says Utah’s H.B. 340 Solar Power Amendments allow qualifying plug-in solar systems up to 1,200 watts to connect to 120-volt outlets without the usual utility-interconnection process. EcoFlow’s explanation says systems above 1,200 watts fall outside that exemption and may require conventional permits, licensed electrical work, and utility approval.
That does not remove the need to verify the outlet, circuit, mounting method, equipment certification, and other applicable requirements. Read EcoFlow’s Utah guidance on H.B. 340 alongside local requirements.
Maryland
EcoFlow says Maryland’s Utility RELIEF Act, signed on May 12, 2026, permits residential plug-in systems up to 1,200 watts per meter without prior utility approval, while requiring customers to notify the utility after installation. EcoFlow also says systems at or below 391 watts receive a UL-certification exemption under the state’s rules.
These Maryland details should be treated as EcoFlow’s account of the rules unless confirmed against the enacted statute and applicable public-service commission guidance. Maryland readers should verify the product-specific requirements with their utility before purchase. EcoFlow’s discussion is available on its plug-in solar legality page; related Maryland legislative material is available here.
Other states
EcoFlow’s state guide describes legislation or proposed changes in places including Maine, New York, and California. It describes Maine legislation as taking effect in July 2026, New York legislation as having passed both chambers but awaiting the governor’s signature, and California legislation as moving through the Assembly.

Those positions can change quickly, and EcoFlow’s summary is not legal advice. Do not assume that a bill, proposal, or recent enactment makes a specific STREAM configuration legal at your address. Check the current law, utility requirements, and product-specific eligibility.
Why EcoFlow’s own pages conflict
EcoFlow’s U.S. pages currently provide inconsistent availability notices:
- The official Microinverter store page says plug-in installation is permitted in Utah and Maryland.
- The STREAM Ultra product page says plug-and-play installation is available only in Utah because of H.B. 340.
- A separate EcoFlow legality page lists both Utah and Maryland.
- The general STREAM collection page retains a Utah-only warning.
Possible explanations include different pages being updated at different times, Maryland eligibility applying to one product before another, separate fulfillment restrictions, or an outdated disclaimer copied across listings. The practical conclusion is straightforward: EcoFlow’s own U.S. pages disagree. Confirm the exact model, state eligibility, utility requirements, and current stock with EcoFlow and the relevant utility before ordering.
Relevant pages include the Microinverter listing, the STREAM Ultra listing, the Ultra product page, and the STREAM collection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo the panels, cables, and mounting hardware come separately?
Do not assume that a listing described as a solar system includes a complete panel array and every part needed for installation. Before buying, confirm:
- The number and wattage of included panels.
- Panel connector type and permitted voltage range.
- Whether brackets or mounting hardware are included.
- Whether extension cables and weatherproof connectors are required.
- Whether the panels and mounting method suit the site’s wind and weather exposure.
- Whether third-party panels are permitted and remain within the Microinverter or Ultra’s electrical limits.
A technically compatible panel is not necessarily appropriate for an exposed balcony, deck, wall, or backyard structure. Structural attachment and weather protection still matter.
Can it run a home during a power outage?
Not in the same way as a professionally installed whole-home backup system.
Grid-tied inverters must stop exporting electricity when the utility grid fails. This anti-islanding behavior protects utility workers and prevents a customer’s equipment from energizing a supposedly de-energized network. A wall-outlet solar system must never be improvised as a way to backfeed a house during an outage.
EcoFlow describes the STREAM Ultra’s stored energy as available for nighttime use and short-term outages, but readers should distinguish between:

- Powering selected loads through an approved configuration.
- Supplying a dedicated backup circuit or transfer arrangement.
- Energizing an entire service panel automatically.
The last option requires dedicated home-energy equipment and appropriate electrical work. Internet connectivity, app setup, smart-meter communication, backup settings, and local requirements may also affect operation. Follow EcoFlow’s installation instructions and do not connect equipment in a way that bypasses required transfer or protection devices.
For larger backup needs, EcoFlow positions products such as the DELTA Pro Ultra X and OCEAN Pro as dedicated home-energy systems with substantially greater capacity and professional installation pathways.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the savings claims really mean
EcoFlow advertises modeled results including:
- Up to $385 per year for a Microinverter-centered setup.
- Up to $1,027 per year for a STREAM Ultra configuration.
- Up to 6,424 kWh generated annually in one configuration.
- Up to 50% of annual household electricity use covered in the company’s simulation.
These are projections, not guarantees. EcoFlow says its simulation uses assumptions including 5.5 hours of sunlight per day and weather factors. Your result will depend on panel orientation, shading, local climate, panel size, household daytime consumption, electricity rates, battery settings, and whether exported energy receives useful compensation.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical estimate is:
Annual savings ≈ solar energy used on site × avoided retail electricity rate + eligible export compensation − system cost − accessories − installation or electrical work.
Self-consumption is often more valuable than exporting energy, but the answer depends on the utility tariff. A shaded apartment with low daytime usage may save much less than a sunny home that runs appliances during the day. A battery can shift solar energy into the evening, but it adds cost and conversion losses.
EcoFlow’s Ultra page also tells customers to confirm whether their billing arrangement supports net metering and suggests a Shelly Pro 3EM smart meter where it does not. That is a configuration and utility question, not a universal feature of every installation.
Installation and safety checklist
Before ordering or connecting a STREAM system, verify all of the following:
- Legal eligibility: Confirm that your state, municipality, utility, meter, and exact product configuration permit the proposed connection.
- System wattage: Check whether the complete setup falls within any applicable exemption or limit.
- Outlet and circuit: Confirm grounding, circuit capacity, outlet condition, shared loads, and the suitability of any outdoor receptacle.
- Weather exposure: Use appropriate weather protection and do not treat water resistance as permission for any installation method.
- Mounting: Ensure the panels and equipment are securely attached for local wind, snow, and other loads.
- Meter treatment: Determine whether a bidirectional meter, notification, net-metering arrangement, or export-limiting configuration is required.
- Panel compatibility: Confirm voltage, current, connectors, panel count, and input limits.
- Backup behavior: Understand exactly which loads remain powered during an outage and what configuration is required.
- No improvised backfeed: Never use a household outlet to energize a panel or grid during an outage unless an approved system has been installed for that purpose.
If local rules or the system design require professional assessment, EcoFlow maintains a certified-installer directory.
STREAM versus rooftop solar and whole-home batteries
| Factor | STREAM plug-in solar | Conventional rooftop solar | Whole-home battery system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Small-scale bill offset and limited storage | Larger annual solar generation | Outage resilience and load management |
| Installation | Simpler where expressly permitted, but still subject to electrical and structural rules | Permitting, inspection, utility interconnection, and professional installation are common | Dedicated equipment, transfer equipment, and professional electrical work are typical |
| Output | Up to 800 W for one Ultra or up to 1,200 W in an advertised multi-unit configuration | Usually much larger, depending on array size | Designed around selected loads or the home’s service and load profile |
| Portability and renter suitability | More suitable for renters and apartment residents where allowed | Usually tied to the property | Generally a permanent property installation |
| Outage capability | Limited and configuration-dependent; grid-tied output must stop during an outage | Requires approved backup equipment to operate during outages | Core purpose is backup, with capacity depending on design |
| Best fit | Small daytime offset in an approved jurisdiction | Maximum generation and long-term ownership | Whole-home or substantial backup |
Who should consider EcoFlow STREAM?
Consider the STREAM Microinverter if you already own compatible panels, primarily want daytime bill reduction, live in a jurisdiction that permits the configuration, and do not need substantial outage backup.
Consider the STREAM Ultra if you want integrated storage, have meaningful evening consumption, need limited short-duration backup, and accept a higher price and more involved configuration.
Consider conventional rooftop solar if you own the property, expect to stay for years, want larger annual generation, and can manage permitting, inspection, interconnection, and professional installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Verdict
EcoFlow has made small, balcony- or deck-style grid-connected solar more accessible to U.S. consumers through the STREAM Microinverter and STREAM Ultra. The products may be useful for renters, apartment residents, and homeowners seeking modest daytime bill offsets without a full rooftop project.
But “plug in and power your home” is too broad. The system does not replace a conventional rooftop array or professionally installed whole-home battery, and legal plug-in use is not nationwide. Utah is the clearest documented market; Maryland may qualify under EcoFlow’s interpretation of 2026 rules, but EcoFlow’s own pages conflict. Verify the state, utility, meter, outlet, product configuration, and current availability before spending money.
