Eco-Friendly Tile: How to Verify Sustainability Before You Specify

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eco-friendly tile is not a material category you can identify from a product name alone. A responsible choice comes from product-level evidence: a current third-party certification where applicable, a properly scoped environmental product declaration (EPD), health and material disclosures, manufacturing information, and proof that the tile and its installation system meet the project’s performance requirements.

Ceramic, porcelain, and glass tiles can all be considered, but the available evidence does not establish a universal environmental winner among those categories. The useful question is whether the exact product proposed for the job has transparent documentation and is suitable for the intended service conditions.

What “eco-friendly tile” means in a real project

Tile sustainability has several dimensions rather than one defining attribute. Recycled content may be relevant, but it is only one data point. A product can also be evaluated through the way raw materials are sourced, how the factory manages energy and emissions, what happens to manufacturing waste, how the product is handled at the end of its useful life, and whether the tile will perform for the required application.

Those questions apply to the complete installed assembly. The visible tile is only one component. Mortar, grout, adhesive, membranes, backer boards, and underlayments can all affect material disclosures, indoor-air documentation, installation waste, and service life. A tile that is documented carefully but installed with an unsuitable or poorly documented system is not a complete sustainability decision.

What is Green Squared®?

Green Squared® is a tile-specific certification program based on ANSI A138.1, American National Standard Specifications for Sustainable Ceramic Tiles, Glass Tiles, and Tile Installation Materials. The ANSI Webstore lists the standard as ANSI A138.1:2011 (R2021). It is a voluntary product standard for assessing conformance with sustainability criteria; it is not a claim that every tile made from a particular material is sustainable.

Certification uses independent, third-party verification. The program evaluates more than recycled content, with criteria covering product characteristics, environmental manufacturing, end-of-life management, corporate governance, and innovation. Some elements are mandatory and others are elective. That multi-attribute structure is why a Green Squared certificate can provide more context than a single recycled-content percentage.

The scope includes ceramic and glass tiles, including porcelain, plus several installation-material categories. Depending on the product, the certified scope can include mortar, grout, adhesive, membranes, backer boards, and underlayments. Always read the certificate itself: the fact that a manufacturer participates in a program does not prove that every product or every installation material in its catalog is certified.

What certification does—and does not—tell you

  • It does: show that the product was assessed against the ANSI A138.1 criteria through the program’s verification process, within the scope stated on the certificate.
  • It does not: rank all tile types, guarantee a lower impact than every uncertified product, or replace project-specific checks for durability, slip resistance, chemical exposure, moisture, freeze-thaw conditions, or installation compatibility.
  • It requires a current check: confirm the exact product name, certificate status, issue or renewal date, and covered manufacturing location before using the claim in a specification.

A product-level verification workflow

Use the following sequence when comparing tile samples or preparing a submittal. It keeps broad marketing language from being mistaken for evidence about the product actually being installed.

  1. Define the exact product and use. Record the manufacturer, collection, series, finish, size, color, thickness, and intended location. Note whether the tile is for an interior wall, interior floor, wet area, exterior facade, roof, pool, or another specialized condition. Sustainability documents are meaningful only when they apply to the specified product and its use.
  2. Check product-specific Green Squared status. Look for a current certificate that names the tile or the precise product family. Review the certification scope and any listed manufacturing site. Do not rely on a corporate sustainability page that does not identify the product being purchased.
  3. Request an EPD. An environmental product declaration reports life-cycle information according to its declared scope and program rules. Check the product reference, declared unit, life-cycle modules, validity period, manufacturing geography, and whether the document covers one product or an average of several products. An EPD for a broad category is not automatically interchangeable with an EPD for the tile under consideration.
  4. Collect health and product disclosures. Ask for a health product declaration (HPD) or comparable ingredient disclosure where available. Review the reporting threshold, product version, publication date, and whether ingredients are reported for the tile body, glaze, surface treatment, or packaging.
  5. Verify recycled-content information. Request the percentage, type, and source of recycled material, along with the method used to substantiate it. Distinguish pre-consumer from post-consumer content when the document does so. A recycled-content statement without a product identifier or supporting documentation should not be treated as a certification.
  6. Review manufacturing and end-of-life information. Look for disclosed energy, water, emissions, waste-management, and process controls, as well as any information about reuse, recycling, or disposal. Record what is actually stated; do not fill gaps with assumptions about how all tile factories operate.
  7. Evaluate the installation materials. Identify the mortar, grout, adhesive, membrane, backer board, and underlayment required by the installation method. Request documentation for those products when project goals or certification requirements call for it, and confirm that substitutions will not invalidate the system design.
  8. Compare like with like. Use the same declared unit, life-cycle scope, geography, service conditions, and documentation date when comparing options. Keep a written record of assumptions so a polished brochure cannot outweigh a better-scoped technical document.

Documents that make a comparison credible

Document or evidence What it can establish Checks before use
Green Squared certificate Third-party verification against ANSI A138.1 criteria for the named product or scope. Product identity, certificate status, dates, manufacturing location, and covered category.
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Declared life-cycle impacts and manufacturing information for a defined product, unit, and geography. Program operator, validity date, life-cycle modules, declared unit, and whether the document is product-specific.
Health Product Declaration (HPD) or health disclosure Reported ingredients and health-related transparency for the documented product version. Reporting thresholds, publication date, product version, and included components.
Recycled-content documentation Declared recycled material content and, when supplied, its source and accounting method. Pre- or post-consumer designation, percentage basis, product identifier, and supporting verification.
VOC documentation Information about volatile-organic-compound testing or content for the product covered. Test method, applicable installation material, date, and whether the document applies to the tile or an accessory.
Manufacturing and end-of-life disclosures Specific practices concerning resource use, waste, emissions, and disposition after use. Facility and geographic scope, reporting period, and whether the statement is a policy or measured result.

No single document answers every question. An EPD may not provide ingredient disclosure, while an HPD generally does not quantify whole-life environmental impacts. Treat the documents as complementary and keep their scopes separate.

How to compare ceramic, porcelain, and glass tile

Ceramic, porcelain, and glass are relevant product categories within the Green Squared framework, but the category name alone is not an environmental ranking. Manufacturing recipes, recycled inputs, factory operations, product thickness, shipping distance, packaging, expected service life, and installation requirements can vary substantially within each category.

For a fair comparison, create a matrix for the actual products being considered:

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Certification Is the exact product currently certified by an independent third party, and what does the certificate cover?
Life-cycle data Is there a current, product-specific EPD with the same declared unit and geographic scope as the alternative?
Health transparency Are ingredients and relevant health information disclosed for the product version being specified?
Recycled inputs What recycled material is used, in what proportion, and how is the claim documented?
Factory information What manufacturing, energy, water, emissions, and waste information is published for the relevant facility?
Installation system Which setting materials and substrate products are required, and are they documented and compatible?
Performance Does the product meet the project’s requirements for wear, slip, moisture, chemicals, thermal movement, and other exposure conditions?

The strongest comparison is not “porcelain versus glass” in the abstract. It is product A versus product B using equivalent documentation and the same performance brief.

Why installation materials and performance belong in the sustainability decision

A tile’s environmental documentation cannot compensate for premature failure. Select the tile and setting system together, following the manufacturer’s installation instructions and the project’s applicable standards. Wet rooms may require a compatible waterproofing assembly; exterior work may require systems designed for movement and weather exposure; heavy-traffic floors need a surface and body suited to the expected wear.

Include mortar, grout, adhesive, membranes, backer boards, and underlayments in the submittal schedule. The Green Squared scope expressly includes these categories, so the installed system can be evaluated rather than treating the visible finish as the whole project. Ask whether each component has its own certificate, EPD, HPD, or VOC documentation when those records are relevant to the owner’s requirements.

Document approved substitutions. Changing a grout or membrane late in construction can alter both technical performance and the environmental documentation attached to the original specification.

Examples of manufacturer documentation

Some manufacturers publish several document types in one sustainability resource center. Portobello America’s sustainability materials list examples such as EPDs, VOC documentation, an HPD, recycled-content material, and Green Squared certificates. Crossville describes recycled material inputs and publishes EPDs and other transparency or certification resources for tile products.

These examples show what to look for in a submittal package; they are not independent proof that one manufacturer or product is more sustainable than another. The relevant test is whether the document names the product, states its scope and date, and can be compared with equivalent information for the alternatives.

Using a manufacturer claim for an uncertified product

Problem: A company has certified products, so the entire catalog is described as certified.

Correction: Match the certificate to the exact series, finish, size, and manufacturing scope in the specification.

Comparing documents with different boundaries

Problem: One EPD covers cradle-to-gate impacts and another covers additional life-cycle stages or a different declared unit.

Correction: State the evidence and its scope, then explain which project conditions and documents support the selection.

A practical specification and submittal checklist

  • Exact manufacturer, series, product code, finish, size, thickness, and color.
  • Intended application and exposure conditions.
  • Current Green Squared certificate, if claimed, with product scope and dates.
  • Product-specific EPD, including declared unit, life-cycle modules, geography, and validity.
  • HPD or other health disclosure, with reporting thresholds and product version.
  • Recycled-content statement with percentage basis and supporting evidence.
  • Manufacturing, waste, emissions, and end-of-life information for the relevant facility or product.
  • Complete list of mortar, grout, adhesive, membranes, backer boards, and underlayments.
  • Performance data required for the project, including wear, slip, moisture, chemical, thermal, and exterior criteria as applicable.
  • Written assumptions, document dates, and approved-substitution procedures.

Use this checklist at design, procurement, and closeout. If a product changes, repeat the product-identity and document-scope checks rather than carrying the original sustainability claim forward automatically.

What the available evidence can support

ANSI A138.1 and Green Squared provide a tile-specific framework for evaluating multiple sustainability attributes, with independent verification for certified products. Product-level EPDs, health disclosures, recycled-content records, and manufacturing information can make competing options more transparent. The evidence does not establish a universal environmental advantage for ceramic, porcelain, glass, recycled-content tile, or any named product. A defensible decision is therefore one that states exactly what was documented, for which product and date, and how the product meets the project’s performance and installation requirements.
