Open shelves are simplest to browse; doors, inserts, or boxes can help reduce exposure to light and dust or keep smaller items organized.
Measure your comics and magazines before choosing a shelf
Comic books, paperbacks, and magazines vary in size, so a shelf intended for one format may not fit another. IKEA’s bookcase guidance notes that some shelves are made for specific formats such as paperbacks or comic books. It gives A4 magazine dimensions as 297 × 210 mm.
Measure the tallest item to establish the minimum clear height between shelves, and the deepest item to establish how far the shelf needs to extend. Leave a little room to pull items out without scraping the shelf above. Check the usable interior dimensions on the specific product listing; an overall bookcase dimension does not tell you the clearance between shelves.
Choose a depth that suits the collection and room
A shallower bookcase can work well for smaller-format reading material and compact rooms. A deeper shelf may better accommodate mixed sizes, but it uses more floor space. The examples below come from current IKEA listings accessed in 2026, in different countries; they are not a controlled comparison, and local availability and specifications can differ.

Because these examples use different regional listings and units, compare the exact dimensions and instructions for the model sold where you live rather than assuming the figures carry across markets.
Decide between open shelves, doors, and compartments
- Open shelves: Keep comics and magazines visible and easy to reach or scan.
- Doors: Can help reduce exposure to light and dust, while making the contents less immediately visible.
- Inserts and boxes: Help divide compartments or conceal and organize items. Check the fit before buying, particularly with a compartmentalized unit such as KALLAX.
For frequent browsing, prioritize an open arrangement and enough clearance to remove items comfortably. If concealing or organizing part of the collection matters more, consider doors, drawers, or boxes—but make sure the storage remains accessible for the formats you use most.

Check shelf capacity and anchor tall bookcases
Use the load rating for the exact model and follow its assembly and safety instructions. IKEA cautions that loading shelves beyond capacity for a prolonged period can cause them to bend or the bookcase to warp. Do not apply the BRIMNES listing’s 18 kg-per-shelf maximum to another product.
Both the cited BILLY U.S. and BRIMNES Canada product pages warn about tipping and require secure wall anchoring with appropriate hardware. Anchor a tall bookcase as directed, using hardware suitable for your wall and home; consult a qualified installer if you are unsure what is appropriate.
